Request for Improving Chinese Translation and Conversion

I need Template:Conversion-zh and Module:Conversion-zh in conversioning zh-hans (中文(简体)) and zh-hant (中文(繁體)) ,like Incubator:Main_Page/zh(because we can't translate Incubator:Main_Page/zh-hans and Incubator:Main_Page/zh-hant). Because of prefix, so I can't create then. Can someone create:

--Sunny00217 (talk) 07:16, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I sincerely apologize for changing the topic name, but we need a more specific topic name. These template and module are important for Chinese translator. For administrators, you can find more information here. The modules and templates has also been implemented on Wikispecies in order to show language variants. However, I do not think it is necessary to have all the Mediawiki:Conversion-zh stuff since Wikispecies also do not have these, but the language conversion function is functional. Also, please remove Incubator:Main_Page/zh-tw, Incubator:Main_Page/zh-hans and Incubator:Main_Page/zh-hant, since we can no longer update the translation and Incubator:Main_Page/zh can take care of the language variants from now on. --VulpesVulpes825 (talk) 02:13, 18 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikinews - DynamicPageList

Hi, I would like ask for some help with DPL.

  • Using addfirstcategorydate=true displays the article dates in English, even if site preferences are set to another language; addfirstcategorydate=ymd gives back a span class error. My goal would be to display the dates in Hungarian formatted to YYYY-MM-DD. Is there a way to do this?
  • Is there a way to display article titles without prefixes with DPL?

I hope someone can point me in the right direction. - Xbspiro (talk) 10:05, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Xbspiro: From my reading of mw:Extension:DynamicPageList (Wikimedia), you can set dates to ymd but that requires being able to change the settings. This is probably a phab: request. —Justin (koavf)TCM 10:47, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - I am not familiar with phab, so I will leave the DPL issue as it is for now. As far as I understand, the variable you mentioned might be referring to is global, i.e. it affects an entire wiki, and can't be limited by specifying a target, say a subset of prefixed pages (i.e. an incubated project). - Xbspiro (talk) 05:16, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Glitch when switching editors?

Hi all, has anyone seen an issue with extra |s being appended to prefixed links when an edit is saved? Here's a recent example: https://incubator.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wp/lkt/Main_Page&diff=4710778&oldid=4704222&diffmode=source The edit is tagged "Tag: Visual edit: Switched" -- does this have something to do with it? Predefinições com base em LUA

Como é que eu faço para aparecer a predefinição {{Wt/grc/grc-κλίσ-'ψυχή'}} igual ao Wikcionário em grego? Eu criei a função "main", mas quando vejo esta predefinição, aparece a mensagem Lua error in Module:Wt/grc/κλίση at line 13: attempt to index global 'Lf' (a nil value). Que valor eu devo colocar?

Leonardo José Raimundo (talk) 22:42, 8 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! The problem is that local Lf calls an attribute of itself while it's being defined, thus is nil. Try local Lf = {} on line 13 to see if that solves the problem. Ebe123 (Talkabout it|contribs) 03:20, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Infelizmente não resolveu o problema. Aparece outra mensagem de erro: Lua error in Module:Wt/grc/κλίση at line 207: attempt to call local 'Lf' (a table value). Que valor da tabela eu devo colocar?
Leonardo José Raimundo (talk) 22:48, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Same problem, just on that line now. However, it does show a bigger problem. By redefining export = {}, Lf, and Lr, anything that was done before has essentially been removed. I suggest either splitting the module in two pages, or removing lines 205 up to 208. Ebe123 (Talkabout it|contribs) 01:11, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Eu desisti de editar o módulo κλίση, porque quando eu removi as linhas de 205 a 208, voltou a seguinte mensagem de erro: Script error: The function "main" does not exist. Pense num módulo difícil de corrigir! Deixarei para um administrador do Wikimedia Incubator fazer isso. Perdi meu tempo com esse módulo.

Interwiki link issue

I don't get understand it. Inserting new interwiki links no longer works. See here for example (section Ref/Vuestexeem). And even copying/pasting old links that are still being displayed. Is this a temporary bug or have some general settings been changed? Or am I the one alone who do not see? Nevatovol (talk) 07:41, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Nevatovol: I haven't yet dealt with Interwiki links. But I have made a small edit in that article. Can you please check if its working now. Adithyak1997 (talk) 06:12, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Adithyak1997: I see your edit, it's works. First question : Is such a template more effective than the former procedure by direct invoking a module?
Second remark : the issue I have noticed is not with general interwiki links of the page (they work all the time), but with inclusions of interwiki links in the corpus of the article, like in the <ref< section (i.e. Edgar Poe, or here apparently also, see editing my message). The issue seems continuing. By the past, ther was no problem, I don't understand why now. Thanks for your interest. Nevatovol (talk) 06:30, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly, I don't know the languages present here. What I does is that I used to compare it those with English wiki. There, they have used a template through which the module is invoked. I just tried that method. That's all. Now I have understood your problem. Let me check it and will reply soon. Adithyak1997 (talk) 06:39, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Nevatovol:The problem is that you need to insert a colon just before mentioning the language. Eg: To use the page Wikipedia from French, use [[:Fr:Wikipedia|Wikipedia]]. This will work. Adithyak1997 (talk) 06:48, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Adithyak1997: Thank you very much, it works with a colon. But I don't understand nevertheless why the interwiki links without colon put in an old article like Edgar Poe stay to work normally. Nevatovol (talk) 06:57, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I just need to tell a reason which I don't know whether it's right. It might be due to the reason that it is placed at very bottom of the page. At times when Wikidata links were not present on left navigation bar, it was this method that was followed. Even now, many pages follow the same tradition. Font css update request for Wp/sgh (Shughni)

Dear Administrator/Bureaucrat,

On MediaWiki:Common.css, for [lang=sgh], could you please help add font-family: "Charis SIL"? Eg:

body, pre {

}

input, textarea, select {

Help smaller wiki communities grow their technical capacity!

Hi all, Small Wiki Toolkits (SWT) is an initiative to support small wiki communities by sharing and developing technical skills needed to support, maintain, and grow a language wiki. You can learn more about it here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits. As a next step for this initiative, sharing with you some ideas on how you can be a part of this:

  • Contribute to a Starter kit by proposing or helping develop and write recommendations for technical topics in simple English.
  • Develop toolkits using the recommendations on the SWT page. You can see existing toolkits in the Category:Small_wiki_toolkits on Wikimedia Commons.
  • Learn technical topics using the resources on the SWT page and apply the skills gained to provide technical support to a small wiki community.
  • Translate resources such as the SWT page itself and tutorials on technical topics linked from it.
  • Provide technical support on the support desk on mediawiki.org, mailing lists, etc.
  • Organize a technical workshop or a session to help a small wiki community.

If you want to help with any of the above or there is anything else you would like to share around building local capacity in a small wiki, please start a discussion on the talk page and/or add your name to the list of interested membersSSethi (WMF) (talk) 00:30, 8 May 2020 (UTC) (on behalf of the Small Wiki Toolkits Initiative)[reply]

Question about a particular wiki, currently in the incubator

Hello, to whomever decides to reply!

This is my very first question,so forgive if I am asking something that should be obvious from the get go.

I would like to ask in which phase is the Montenegrin version of the wikipedia and if that is an objective possibility at this point? From what I can tell, none of it has been edited since late 2017. Back then, there was talk of ISO 639-3 code, which Montenegrin did get (cnr), but beyond that I couldn't find anything that would signal any kind of development and possible publication of the actual Montenegrin Wikipedia pages outside of the incubator... Is the linguistic situation different now to what it was in 2017 and 2018?

Kind regards!

A relevant sister project: Wikispore

It seems like no one has formally mentioned Wikispore to the community here. This project would act in a similar fashion to Incubator but instead of providing a space for building up new language editions of existing projects, this would be essentially an incubator for new sister projects. I recommend anyone interested take a look. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:41, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

bugfix request: problem displaying Meitei script (mni) in Chrome on Windows

I saw the https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wt/mni/ project and i've noticed it's tofutext in Chrome on Windows, but i can see the text properly in firefox and edge, and i know i have a couple of different fonts installed that include this alphabet Noto Sans Meetei Mayek and the Microsoft font family Nirmala UI. If i want to view it, i can use firefox or edge, but chrome on windows is a fairly popular setup so others might be having the same issue. I couldn't find many other websites using this script, and the two i found also had problems on chrome, but possibly these can be over-ridden with some setting adjustments on the project, since with the right settings i've managed to get the script to display in chrome on en.wikipedia.org

The account is actually created 2 or 3 days back only. So I think he needs to become an implicit user of the group and not through granting it. MF-W has granted him right as a confirmed user and not an auto confirmed one. I have actually understood the difference between both but I once again think he will have to wait. I also think that he might have to continue his other edits on Incubator so as to implicitly become an autoconfirmed one. Sorry for repetition (if any) in this comment. Adithyak1997 (talk) 02:48, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Visual Editor out of beta

Currently, in the Incubator the Visual Editor is beta feature and it's disabled by default. This means that it's not available at all to anonymous editors, and not obviously available to logged-in users either.

I suggest moving it out of beta, so that all editors will be able to easily choose which one to use. This was already done in almost all Wikipedias and in many other wikis. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 07:06, 25 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Slides in PDF

Hi,

The Celtic Knot conference begins today. See meta:Celtic Knot Conference 2020 for full information about it.

One of the talks there is by myself, and it's about the Incubator. It's mostly about the things that I raised on the Community Portal in 2018 and also on the page Incubator:Reform discussions.

Comments, positive and negative, from anybody who feels related to the Incubator in any way, are very welcome.

I am quite sure that the rest of the conference is very interesting to people in the Incubator community, too, so check out all the talks! --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 09:55, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your interesting talk. Just a minuscule comment about slide 25, "Every page has to be in a category, added manually": There's no policy that pages need to be put into a category. But of course the more annoying point, that if a category is used, it needs to have a prefix, is true. --MF-W {a, b} 12:28, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You're right about that, though I opened it in the editor and it produced an error, but maybe that happens with all prefixes now that I think of it. --Sabelöga (talk) 15:15, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Templates with just the project name

Hi, I've noticed there's some templates in test projects just called Template:Wp/xyz (such as Template:Wp/arq) which means the pages won't get imported if they eventually get approved (as they would be imported to Template: which is impossible to access). Maybe an Abuse Filter should be set to disallow users from creating pages with names with just the project bit in the Template and Module namespaces as well as their respective talk pages --Nintendofan885 (talk) 22:08, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted that page now, as it was unused and could be problematic. But the premise "won't get imported" is not necessarily true, so I don't see a pressing need for an abuse filter. Better to contact users who create such templates (if any) and ask them to choose a better name. --MF-W {a, b} 01:07, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh ok, thanks. The "won't get imported" bit was just because I originally thought they wouldn't be imported but then forgot to change the first bit of the message when I realised they would --Nintendofan885 (talk) 08:29, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

NEW: Lists of technical resources and recommendations for smaller language wikis!

Hello everyone, As part of the Small wiki toolkits initiative, a Starter kit has been developed for smaller language Wikimedia wikis! This Starter kit lists resources, tools, and recommendations in technical areas (e.g., templates, bots, gadgets, etc.) relevant to smaller wikis that are just getting started. Small wiki contributors can use it to make their community's workflow easier. You can now use and promote the Starter kit in your wiki community, and start translating the landing page and its subpages in a language you want.

If you have any questions, ideas for venues where it should be shared or wiki pages where it should be linked, or any other suggestions for improving it further, please share on this talk page.

If you are interested in helping with the Small Wiki Toolkits initiative and can offer help with running workshops, developing toolkits, or exchanging problems and challenges in smaller wiki communities, add yourself as a member here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits#Members. --SSethi (WMF) (talk) 18:36, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Does the MassDelete gadget work as intended here? It's not working at mul.ws

Since s:lij: just graduated from s:mul:, we have thousands of pages to delete. It's pretty exhausting doing it manually and while MediaWiki:Gadget-massdelete.js is very helpful, the "DELETE ALL PAGES!" option is not working, leaving me having to click 6,000 times. Does delete all pages work here? If so, can someone help me decode why it's not working on mul.ws? Thanks. Additionally, I tried a pywiki solution outlined at mw:Manual:Pywikibot/PAWS and could not get it to work. If anyone wants to help me with that it would be appreciated but that seems much more involved. —Justin (koavf)TCM 12:22, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, a fake Special:MassDelete appears and works like a charm. There is no "DELETE ALL PAGES" button though, it just says "Delete". But my knowledge of JS in non-existent, so no idea what could be done to make it work for you. - Maybe User:Ooswesthoesbes can help? He did mass-deletions on oldWS in the past, if I recall correctly. I could also help you with a pywiki solution, probably. --MF-W {a, b} 13:15, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MF-Warburg: I was just confused: there is both a gadget (which makes the "DELETE ALL PAGES!" text) and a script (which creates the psuedo-special page). If you look at the logs, you'll see that it's working just fine at mul.ws. Thanks for responding. —Justin (koavf)TCM 13:52, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
On s:mul:Category:Ligure a red "DELETE ALL PAGES!" appears, as well as a red "X" behind every single page. By using that, the category should be cleared within a few minutes, and it used to do that, but indeed. Something is altered and it no longer works. So unfortunately, the only solution I see is by using a bot with temporary admin access. --OWTB (talk) 15:30, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ooswesthoesbes: Please see above: the massdelet.js script works just fine. See s:mul:Special:Log. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:01, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have a small suggestion. Since it's informed by Koavf that it worked recently, please check if you can identify the edits which are made on the Mediawiki namespace. Since Koavf is experienced, I think you can also try by checking the console section in the inspect option by adding ?debug to the url (I don't know whether you have tried this). Adithyak1997 (talk) 16:07, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Adithyak1997: s:mul:MediaWiki:Gadget-massdelete.js works just fine, actually. I was wrong. It is a different gadget that doesn't work as I expected. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:01, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So, it's resolved then? --OWTB (talk) 18:10, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Resolved enough, yes. The very quick method doesn't work but the pretty quick method does. My labor is reduced by 99% and my time is reduced by 95%, so I am happy. Mieëvaadj. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:22, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Alright :) Unfortunately, my knowledge of JS is non-existent as well, because it's sad the tool does not work. --OWTB (talk) 06:27, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ooswesthoesbes: No, the tool did work. See the log at mul.ws. —Justin (koavf)TCM 09:56, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You mean MassDelete right? "DELETE ALL PAGES!" does not work for me. --OWTB (talk) 07:19, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ooswesthoesbes: MassDelete via Special:MassDelete works but it does not work if you put your cursor in the field for "Other/additional reason:" and hit "Enter": that was the problem I encountered before. You need to click on the "Delete" button or use tab to focus on it and hit enter. "DELETE ALL PAGES!" does not work. —Justin (koavf)TCM 08:09, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Is Incubator similar to the Sandbox in Wikipedia ?

Helppublic (talk) 16:01, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No.
--MF-W {a, b} 17:25, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Helppublic: There are no WMF wikis that are purely sandboxes. testwiki: and test2wiki: are used for testing and have pretty broad allowances on what can be posted. Incubator, s:mul:, and betawikiversity: are for starting actual projects. wikispore: is for testing possible sister projects. The closest to what you are thinking of is likely testwikidata: .—Justin (koavf)TCM 18:03, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Translation Tool

Hi, is there a way to use the Translation Tool available in full-fledged Wikipedia for incubators? I find it easier to use the side-by-side method, even if there is not a suggested machine translation that we can use as a starting point. I've tried looking for it here, but haven't been able to find it so far - maybe I missed something? सदस्य (talk) 23:54, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately not, see phabricator:T89089. --MF-W {a, b} 09:51, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, got it, thanks! सदस्य (talk) 00:15, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Apparent (very annoying) bug

I have two issues for people endowed with both technical gifts and special permissions. Here comes number one:

I have become active at the Zealandic Wiktionary recently, and it struck me that everytime I (or someone else, for that matter) create a link structured [[Wt/zea/something|something]], a pipe is added automatically when I start editing the page. Since I sometimes make mistakes or omit things, I have to edit pages several times and the pipes start to accumulate. today I saw a page with [[|||Wt/zea/something|something]].

This means everytime I edit an entry, I have to manually remove the pipe(s) in all links. This can be quite time-consuming for entries with, for example, elaborate translation sections. I really don't get it. Who the heck wrote this sadistic bit of crap code? Is it a bug? A mistaken request? Please developers, editing Incubator is already so challenging because of the constant prefixing of things. Having to remove dozens of pipes everytime I adapt an existing entry drives me completely crazy and slowly takes my will to live (or at least to edit Incubator)... Steinbach (talk) 12:30, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am trying to reproduce it. See [1] (can be deleted later). It shows the added pipes when viewing the source code, but not when looking at the diff. Is it the same for you? --MF-W {a, b} 15:22, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your swift reply. I edited your very test page, with the same result. Of course, it would be fine if it always went that way. But this morning, I had an instance where the pipes appeared to be permanent and had to be removed. As I mentioned, they even appeared three times in the source code, although the history shows them only once. Steinbach (talk) 17:00, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I did some more testing and changing the test-wiki personal preference also does nothing. I have no idea what's going on here; probably it's best to file a bug on Phabricator. --MF-W {a, b} 22:50, 16 August 2020 (UTC) It's the AddPrefix gadget. It does not actually add a pipe, it merely shows a pipe when you have that gadget turned on, because that's the sign to the gadget that it should not add another prefix in that place. --MF-W {a, b} 22:57, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Special characters

Can someone please expand/adapt the special characters available for direct insertion? The standard set only features a very limited number of (mostly) wiki-syntax options, and alternative sets are limited to the characters needed to write one particular language. For the Wiktionary entries I create, I need more characters than those in which the Zealandic language is written. I need letters with macrons for etymology sections, and IPA for pronunciation sections. So can we please

  • Add IPA as a set
  • Add a few special Latin characters (including but no limited to macrons) to the standard set? Or alternatively
  • Add Proto-Indo-European and other reconstructed languages as another set?

Oh, and by the way: The special characters still feature "Aeres" as an option. Aeres has long been debunked as a hoax language, so it should be removed. Steinbach (talk) 12:30, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I added the IPA characters which enwiki offers: [2]. Does that work for you? I mean that in both senses - is that configuration ok, and: does the character insertion work? For me it doesn't (clicking there has no effect), but I am also not sure if it worked before I made these changes, as I haven't used the function for a long time. When this works, I'll add another set for special Latin characters. Thanks for pointing out that Aeres should be removed, I did so. --MF-W {a, b} 23:54, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again for your quick action! It doesn't work for me either: when I click the characters, I suddenly jump to the top of the page. But at least I can now copy and paste the characters directly in the same tab, which is quite an improvement already. I hope you'll notify us when this glitch gets fixed, but never mind: I'll be patient.
I also hope you'll add the Proto-languages character set as an option. You can check the "Proto-languages" set at the English Wiktionary for inspiration. Steinbach (talk) 10:13, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
User:Steinbach: I have now replaced our old system (which apparently was using outdated code) with the "new technology" from enwiki. It works now again and is a gadget enabled by default; if you don't have javascript enabled, you will see a box for copying-and-pasting. I added the Proto-languages set from English Wiktionary as well.
@ anyone reading this: I did not recreate our old language-specific sets of characters, as I think many of them were not even used anymore and can now easily be found under the general Latin characters. But if any test-wiki community wants a specific set (re)added, we can do so. --MF-W {a, b} 11:50, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I see, thanks again for your nearly immediate action! It works wonderful now and the range of characters is more than adequate (though I doubt whether we need a separate set for "IPA (English"). Now I can easily write the elaborate entries I wish for. Steinbach (talk) 14:38, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Interwiki Attribution

I am worried that a lot of articles created by copying from other Wikimedia pages are lacking adequate attribution. en:Wikipedia:Copying_within_Wikipedia recommends the following style of comment, retroactively added if need be:

Content in this edit is translated from the existing French Wikipedia article at fr:Exact name of French article; see its history for attribution.

Will an initial comment such as

Taken from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:CS1_errors

suffice, or is the legalese above needed. There is quite a bit of material with initial comments of that form. --RichardW57 (talk) 10:59, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If the legalese is required, is DIY translation to a language not normally used for legal documents appropriate? Does it make more sense to stick to English? --RichardW57 (talk) 10:59, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Active wikis which might get their own site soon

Projects having Common.css

Is it possible to a project to have a custom MediaWiki:Common.css page? As I saw, the Euskara Wikivoyage (here) project has a custom Common.css, although it is not possible to create one manually. I think this type of thing doesn't work for projects, but I don't really know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (although I want to know 😛). Thanks in advance. -- Iohanen (João) (talk) 08:40, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it works. Interface-admins can create/edit them for the community. Please make requests on I:AN. --MF-W {a, b} 08:52, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
MF-W, we can't have our own gadgets per test wikis, can we?--evrifaessa ❯❯❯ talk 09:29, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! -- Iohanen (João) (talk) 11:32, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Evrifaessa: You may not be able to configure gadgets for each of your projects through user [Preferences] setting, but you can configure all users editing in your project to use the same gadget, theoretically. --Sotiale (talk) 06:28, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sitelinks

Hi! Is it possible to add sitelinks to incubating languages, eg. Link between w:Ghana and Wp/dag/Ghana for example? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Masssly (discussioncontribs).

@Masssly: Yes but most projects would discourage that. Until a project has graduated from Incubator, the amount of incoming links from established projects would probably be very minimal. —Justin (koavf)TCM 09:29, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Justin. I'm curious to know how it is done anyway :) -—M@sssly 19:17, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Because the quality of entries here would be assumed to be lower. —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:34, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
.Also, of course, because the interwiki link functionality for wikis that have their own subdomain is provided by Wikidata "automatically". --MF-W {a, b} 21:30, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Message box colours

I imported message box templates and modules from the English Wikipedia, but I don't get coloured backgrounds. Is this a mistake I've made, or is it caused by the Incubator features we rely on? How to use the Visual Editor cite template in incubator

Hi. I was looking to find the cite template on Visual Editor. Does it work in the incubator, if so, how do I enable it? I'm working on Wp/dag. —M@sssly 19:21, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If we define MediaWiki:Wp/dag/Visualeditor-cite-tool-definition.json in your incubating project, you may be able to use Cite button in Visual editor. This should have basic citation templates ready for your project. From what I remember, .json can also be applied to individual incubating projects. --Sotiale (talk) 14:00, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly, seems to work only with site-wide setting :( It will be inconvenient, but please use Wp/dag/cite news, book, etc through [Insert] -> [template]. --Sotiale (talk) 14:39, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox person on Wp/dag

Hi, could someone please help me to create an infobox-person template for use on Wp/dag. -—M@sssly 22:35, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that the template was imported as it is from enwiki, etc. The problem, as I understand it, is that it doesn't have the modules and other templates needed to make it work. If you import it properly, it will work without any problems. First of all, it must be clear that you need some templates and related modules(Module:Wp/dag/InfoboxImage, etc). Please let me know if you find it difficult to solve. --Sotiale (talk) 13:32, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sotiale, I don't have the knowledge to solve/fix it unfortunately, and would appreciate your help. Thanks. —M@sssly 13:37, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Masssly. This place will soon be on Monday(23:03, sadly), so I can't fix it right away. But if I have enough time, I'll try to fix. Can you wait a few days? --Sotiale (talk) 14:03, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I can wait, thanks again. —M@sssly 14:06, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You could get User:Iohanen/Template:Infobox _person, you would just have to translate it to your language (it's very simple, but if you understand it, you can expand it as you need). - Iohanen (João) (talk) 21:54, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The template presented by Iohanen doesn't use complex modules. So if you can understand the template's structure, you might be better using the template. Otherwise, if you are familiar with English Wikipedia type, I will do before Wednesday. --Sotiale (talk) 12:56, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Myself and the people who're going to be working on Wp/dag are existing English Wikipedia editors, and so we're more familiar with the English Wikipedia type templates and would prefer that. —M@sssly 13:10, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There are some css changes that need to be modified, and I haven't completed it all within today because I logged in late to do something else today.. I will contact you when it is done. --Sotiale (talk) 15:15, 16 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Masssly: More detailed templates should be brought in if necessary, but the basic ones will work. See this page. Please let me know if you have any problems. Also, I can't speak your language, so localization is up to you. Tell me if you need help. --Sotiale (talk) 07:19, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Sotiale. I'll try it out and give you feedback. —M@sssly 23:22, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to create a new prefix for a new Wiki? It can?

Hello , I have a question : How to create a new prefix for a new Wiki? Once4O4 (talk) 17:39, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You need to have a valid ISO-639 language code (like pt for portuguese) and you need to choose a type of project (Wikipedia > Wp, Wiktionary > Wt). I recommend you to read the Help:Manual :) - Iohanen (João) (talk) 22:27, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Other question : How to crete templates in new wikis , what code use to create templates in Wikimedia Incubator ?? Once4O4 (talk) 13:47, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To create templates under testwikis you just need to use Template:Wx/xyz/Template_name (every template needs to be prefixed). About the code, I would recommend you to ask help to an admin, or read the Small wiki toolkits (this one is located on Meta). - Iohanen (João) (talk) 18:56, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(Edit conflict) If you're not sure about getting started after reading the manual, Requests for starting a test is also the way to go. --Sotiale (talk) 13:51, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Disruptive spamming by ignorant people

Dear community,

None of you will have missed the recent controversy around the Scots Wikipedia, which through the years has been flooded by a user who knew little or no Scots. Now Incubator is filled to the brim with similar content. People, no doubt in good faith, trying to help often dormant test wikis by filling them up with content in what they think is the relevant language.

Of course, for a wiki to be approved, a sanity check is conducted to see whether the content is really in the language it claims to be. But wouldn't it be better to stop people right away? After all, they are taking other people's time when their mess must either be corrected or be deleted. Moreover, they scare away potential competent newcomers ("what the f*** are they thinking? Is this supposed to be my language?"). There are a few users around here - I won't drop any names - who have done a lot more harm than good in ways like these. I think we should just ask them to leave (or at least to stop) and delete their contributions. It may not be courteous, but it will greatly benefit the project.

By the way, we should do the same with so-called test wikis that have zero content in the language itself and only say "if you speak this language, please write stuff" - especially if these pages have been around for literally years with no trace of involvement by even basic level speakers. I mean "projects" like the this one.

A further reason to delete such content is that such zealousness often stems from POV pushing or vanity. Many of those never-developed test wikis were suggested by a user who wants every Wikipedia to include an article on his non-notable church. Another user, a Jesus freak, flooded test Wiktionaries with Bible books. (Please keep in mind that I have nothing against Christianity, it's just that two prominent examples of disruptive editing happen to come from POV pushing Christians.) This is really the last thing we want. So can we please, please, please, be a little more critical and purge Incubator from these profoundly unhelpful contributions? Steinbach (talk) 15:56, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you, if there are such users, it's best to "stop them before it's too late". Feel free to request deletion of articles not actually in the correct language on I:RFD. The same with empty test-projects. I have, for the same reason, recently started to delete Requests for new languages on meta which were made by people without a connection to the language. Even though I think a page inviting contribution like the Nama example you linked might still be ok, we already have the test-wiki info pages (generated automatically or via template) for that without the need for a condescending sentence like "Nama speakers are encouraged to create as many top-quality articles as possible." --MF-W {a, b} 19:25, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For the record, I deleted all Wp/naq pages - there were just the barebones Main Page written in English with the cited sentence, and 4 or 5 "articles" about countries: each only containing an infobox with pictures and no text apart from the country's name. --MF-W {a, b} 02:25, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The template was deleted as an "unused unprefixed template". I suggest it is recreated as a redirect to Template:Delete, as this is a common shortcut across multiple sites. It should be clear why this is unprefixed, and no wonder a deletion template is unused either. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 22:06, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sylheti Wikipedia

I think, Sylheti Wikipedia should be added on the active wiki list.--এম আবু সাঈদ (talk) 15:35, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you think so, you can do so yourself. --MF-W {a, b} 18:03, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Integrate Incubator Quote

Can Incubator Wikiquote articles be integrated into the corresponding Wikipedia? I've tried a few things but so far it hasn't worked properly.

In this site:
https://pa.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A8%97%E0%A9%8C%E0%A8%A4%E0%A8%AE_%E0%A8%AC%E0%A9%81%E0%A9%B1%E0%A8%A7

This article integrated:
https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wq/pa/%E0%A8%97%E0%A9%8C%E0%A8%A4%E0%A8%AE_%E0%A8%AC%E0%A9%81%E0%A9%B1%E0%A8%A7

I tested with this code but not function right:
{{Wikiquote |ਗੌਤਮ ਬੁੱਧ (Last bracket removed for visibility)
--Riquix (talk) 06:12, 4 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. What you want, like this template, will have a box on the right and link to other projects, right? Handing over from the incubator to Punjabi Wikipedia is possible by creating a template here, but in the case of Punjabi Wikipedia, you have to ask for comments there. --Sotiale (talk) 12:09, 4 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, Thank you, --Riquix (talk) 04:57, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Question about templates

Hi all, I'm looking for a template similar to this one of the Spanish Wiktionary that basically helps folks to add audio files to the definitions. Is there something remotely similar here? Or do I need to move it from there? Cheers, --Oscar . (talk) 17:18, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Perhaps, it is the best option for you to import the template into your project. There may be projects that use a similar template, but it is better to import it. --Sotiale (talk) 15:03, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Interface message change

Please, remove from MediaWiki:Wminc-infopage-title-p/ru quotes because they’re already provided by MediaWiki:quotation-marks. 217.117.125.72 17:35, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You can make the necessary changes on translatewiki:MediaWiki:Wminc-infopage-title-p/ru. --MF-W {a, b} 02:21, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No, I can't because I'm not registered there. 217.117.125.72 08:07, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Does Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser work here?

Hi, Is it possible to make a list of incubator pages in AutoWikiBrowser and edit them? E.g. How will I make a list of the pages in the category Wp/Dag and then edit them? -—M@sssly 11:51, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You can use AWB to make a list of pages on any MediaWiki wiki. E.g. you can make pages from Category:Wp/dag. As per editing, you can give it a try. —Justin (koavf)TCM 08:24, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This template does not open the map. Please help me fix it.

1 Нижний парк  Нижний парк.     9:00-20:00. 450 руб для граждан России и СНГ (требуют предъявить паспорт), остальным 900 руб. Вечером действует специальная цена 200 руб.

--ZUFAr (talk) 15:28, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ZUFAr:. Hi. The temaplate you want to use is a combination of several modules and additional templates. It seems that the template cannot load normally because there are not enough modules or templates. I'm not sure I have enough time to help you, but before that, if you can figure out the modules you need, try importing. --Sotiale (talk) 10:49, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why am I here?

So, I got a notification on my Wikipedia User Page about creating a Incubator User Page. Why is that? Also, am I correct in assumeing that Incubator is kind of a test bed or launching site for new wikis? ThanksMulstev (talk) 06:45, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your second question: yes. No idea about the first one. :/ —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:49, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Where did you get such a notification? I don't see anything on en:User_talk:Mulstev. --MF-W {a, b} 12:42, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That is actually a really good question. I was looking at the main page of English Wikipedia, and then I saw that I had an alert (I think), which directed me to Incubator. It was from Welcoming Bot, and brought me to this URL: https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Mulstev. It was weird because I had never heard of Incubator before, and I don't think I have ever received a message from that particular bot. It is all a mystery to me. Mulstev (talk) 21:02, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And your right, there is no trace of the whole thing on my user page. All I remember is being on Wikipedia, and then taking a hyper link to the above mentioned page. Mulstev (talk) 21:06, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Then I think this is what happened: your account here on Incubator was created - either by you visiting it, or by some link which caused the creation (I don't quite understand how that works, I only know it happens sometimes). And then you automatically got a welcome message by our bot here, which caused a notification (shown in the uppermost part of the screen where there is a bell next to your user name). --MF-W {a, b} 16:05, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, that makes sense. Thanks for the information. Mulstev (talk) 16:54, 30 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Most active incubator wikis

Is there a way to see which incubator wikis are the most active ones? A list like meta:List of Wikipedias would be helpful. Voltairacus (talk) 21:55, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I recently asked someone to compile a list; it is based on the number of edits in the last 30 days: User:MF-Warburg/tests (it's edited with some notes regarding listing on I:Featured wikis and Langcom approvals). --MF-W {a, b} 13:57, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Viewing all the contents of a project

Hi. Recently I've been contributing on the Middle English Wikipedia project and I've been noticing that a number of articles haven't been categorized in the Wp/enm category. Would there be any way for me to view all the contents of the project so I can properly categorize the pages? CanadianToast (talk) 03:43, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Special:Prefixindex/Wp/enm/ would be useful to you, I think. --MF-W {a, b} 13:54, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

BCL Wiktionary Request for Adminship

Hello, I would like to apply for adminship. This is in preparation once our Central Bikol Wiktionary would be ready for final approval. I think starting projects like this would require a regular maintenance and checking. This is also to secure accuracy of entries. I hope you can consider my request. Kunokuno (talk) 03:47, 10 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you can only apply for adminship on the new wiki once it is created. See Help:FAQ#How_does_someone_become_admin?. --MF-W {a, b} 12:09, 10 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
