Incubator:Administrators' noticeboard

(Redirected from Incubator:AN)

This is the page to request attention from test administrators, administrators and bureaucrats. Note what they can do.

Administrators can:

  • protect and unprotect pages
  • delete and undelete pages
  • delete images and other uploaded files
  • block and unblock users
  • edit the interface and other protected pages
  • use the built-in rollback functionality

Test administrators can do the same (except protecting and unprotecting pages), but only within their tests (therefore they cannot edit the interface).

  • Exception: As rollback is only appropriate to use in cases of vandalism, test-administrators can use that feature anywhere they see vandalism.

Bureaucrats can do all the above, as well as:

  • grant administrator/bureaucrat status
  • grant/revoke test-administrator status
  • grant/revoke bot flags
  • rename users [now mostly obsolete in favor of global accounts and unified login]

Note: Only Stewards may remove adminship or bureaucratship. If you want this to be done go to Requests for permissions at the Meta-Wiki.

If there is no response, you may wish to try the IRC channel, #wikimedia-incubator.

  • For deletion requests, use I:RFD for test deletions and {{delete}} for speedy deletions.
  • For user rights (admins, test-admins, bots, ...) or renamings, see I:A.

Interface page for wy/mrEdit

I am requesting move for pages I have created/imported from other wikis to mediawiki namespace. If there is something more needed to be done before you move them, let me know. thanks for the help in advance. QueerEcofeminist (talk) 13:32, 15 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@MF-Warburg, Can you help me in this? Sorry I could see only you in active IA on this page, so pinging you. Let me know if I need to make any changes before you move them? QueerEcofeminist (talk) 16:44, 18 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The first two ones are supposed to become MediaWiki:Wy/mr/... pages, correct? What functions do they supply that are currently needed? About the gadgets, I don't think prefixes work for them, but they can be available as general Incubator gadgets, I suppose. --MF-W {a, b} 23:43, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@MF-Warburg right, actually while creating I have kept the full page name as it is. but here it will be all different.
  • MediaWiki:Wy/mr/Common.css
  • MediaWiki:Wy/mr/Common.js
So your saying gadgets don't need prefixes? but they will be for all the projects and those who need it can avail?
Now, I am not sure these gadgets will work here or not as there might be other pages/modules needed for them. But till we have these pages I won't know that. QueerEcofeminist (talk) 04:36, 24 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I can see gadgets files for wp/bgn and wp/khw. Obviously, I couldn't check whether its working or not but there are gadgets pages with prefix. QueerEcofeminist (talk) 04:54, 24 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@QueerEcofeminist: As far as I understand, all of these are exact copies of the same pages on the English Wikivoyage, correct? Have you tested them (in your common.js) to check that they work as they should in the Incubator? If not, please do that first. Then, if they work like they should here, we should include them with mw.loader.load directly from the English Wikivoyage in MediaWiki:Wy/mr/Common.js, so that they stay in sync with the originals. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:40, 26 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jon Harald Søby, I will try in my common js and get back here soon. Thanks for the heads up. QueerEcofeminist (talk) 05:50, 27 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

A bug with the editor on Incubator (| pipe symbols are being automatically added before links)Edit

I'm experiencing a weird bug that has never happen on a different Wikimedia project. You can see me removing them on an article in this edit, but this keeps happenening on almost every link every time I start editing a page, and during every such edit I have to make sure to remove somehow automatically added pipe symbols from affected links. There are new pipe links being automatically added for every edit made (i.e. Wy/hbs/Brisel becomes [[|Wy/hbs/Brisel]] and breaks the link). Has anyone experienced this bug here, and where should I submit a bug report if I can? -Vipz (talk) 15:55, 21 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Quick update: I'm not sure yet if it 100% stopped, but they don't seem to be added after disabling AddPrefix gadget in preferences. I'll post another update if I still experience this bug. -Vipz (talk) 16:12, 21 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Vipz: I am working on a replacement for the AddPrefix gadget that fixes this issue (and a slew of other issues). It should be ready soon, I hope. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 22:16, 21 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's great to hear, however here I am with a quick update... it happened once again with the gadget off. No idea what could be causing it. -Vipz (talk) 22:06, 22 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Vipz: Are you sure it happened while you were editing, and that it hadn't happened to you (or someone else) on the previous save before you started editing? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:14, 26 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jon Harald Søby: the symbols happen to be added to the source code at the moment of clicking Edit and seeing it, not during the edit or after saving. See me removing a couple of ||| in this edit. I was the only one editing that page at the time. -Vipz (talk) 21:28, 26 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The ones you are removing there were added in these 3 edits by another user (who probably had the gadget enabled at the time), so it's safe to say it's not coming from your end when you have the gadget disabled. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 06:54, 27 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Accidental IP editEdit

Hi, I accidentally made an IP edit to my talk page while being logged out of my account. I'd rather not have my IP visible, so would it be possible to get it removed and if so, how would I go about doing that? --YoungstownToast (talk) 16:54, 24 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I hid it. For the future, it might be advisable to not post the request itself publicly, but to e-mail an admin. --MF-W {a, b} 20:17, 24 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wy/hbs Latin-Cyrillic converter in the futureEdit

There is an ongoing effort to support Latin -> Cyrillic converting for Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia, if and when that is implemented, can it be used on Serbo-Croatian Wikivoyage as well? One of my concerns is that the latter was requested with the ISO-639 -3 code [hbs] instead of the one that our other projects use with ISO-639 -1 [sh], could that be an obstacle? I would have personally preferred keeping everything consistent with the latter code, but I'm not the requester. P.S. sorry if this is not the right place to ask, redirect me if so, thank you. -Vipz (talk) 19:19, 24 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Vipz: Yes, if it is approved, we will import it to shwikivoyage and not hbswikivoyage. There is already enough of a mess with language code redundancy/overlap in MediaWiki/Wikimedia, so we're not gonna create more of that unless it's absolutely necessary.
And using the same converter – when it exists – for Wikipedia and Wikivoyage would be no problem whatsoever. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 06:50, 27 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Users Moshidai and Weather Top WizardEdit

The users User:Moshidai and User:Weather Top Wizard do something similar: create a lot of nearly-identical articles about Japanese articles in various languages.

These articles are useless, and they don't help these languages graduate from the Incubator.

I've already asked User:Moshidai about that, and they kept doing it. User:Weather Top Wizard was not warned about this specific thing before today, but there are requests from other users to stop "helping" them in similar ways.

I recommend that the administrators consider blocking these users and deleting the pages they created. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 08:50, 29 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Try m:SRCU instead? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 03:40, 1 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This reply is really unhelpful and uncalled for. Amir is a very experienced user and if he had wanted to make a request on Meta, he surely would have done so. Unfortunately, it seems to become more and more of a pattern for you to give useless replies on pages which you know are regularly being watched and answered by Incubator admins / Langcom members - but where your "answer" is always just some misleading "go to some random other page instead" or an outlandish statement that something is policy which is not. You should really rethink your participation in these requests. --MF-W {a, b} 22:32, 2 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Striked, I originally guess that they want a checkuser request, my fault. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 01:02, 5 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
User:Amire80: thanks for pointing these out! I also find them very concerning and we regularly have to block similar accounts. I'm asking User:Sotiale to have a look as well. --MF-W {a, b} 22:32, 2 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Moshidai blocked and pages created by him deleted. Looks like a continuation of Special:Contribs/Bosco1122. --MF-W {a, b} 22:36, 2 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Moshidai perfectly matches users who blocked countless times here. But Weather Top Wizard is slightly different, so they don't seem to be the same user as the previously blocked user. This user should be notified if their behavior is appropriate, and if it persists, they will have no other choice. --Sotiale (talk) 09:16, 3 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Change of code uun to pzhEdit

Pazeh language was put under the ISO 639 uun, but it's now assigned with a new code pzh, and someone has move the page WP/uun to WP/pzh.

But I still got warning saying it's not allowed to to create a new entry with the new code. I would like to know how to fix the problem.--Cosinepi-fly (talk) 11:35, 1 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@MF-Warburg: Many thanks for your help! I would say I am around lower-intermediate level in Pazeh. I study the language with written material and the elders. I can produce some simple sentences, but still have to make use of the dictionary to have a better expression.--Cosinepi-fly (talk) 00:01, 3 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

JhsBot broke Thai Wikivoyage's css by moving Wy/th/common.css. I'm requesting edit to MediaWiki:Wy/th/Common.css, changing the link from "//" to "//". I know this is not secure but it is probably the best way to do it for now. --Bebiezaza (talk) 06:51, 14 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I moved the contents to the MediaWiki page and deleted the main space page. That's a sneaky workaround someone introduced there years ago, but we certainly don't want to get css (or js) from a page editable by everyone. --MF-W {a, b} 01:58, 16 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wy/th/Common.js's content model should be changed to JavaScript. And please add importScript("Wy/th/Common.js"); to MediaWiki:Wy/th/Common.js, if possible. --Bebiezaza (talk) 06:51, 14 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

An administrator keep undeleting test pagesEdit

Hello, I have notice that an admin, User:Jon Harald Søby, keep undeleting a test page which deleted by 2 different admins. And even creating a category for the test page after the test page being deleted twice. I found that it is quite disruptive as there are already a test wiki for admins to test. I hope someone can aware this issue. 01:16, 13 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Who is it actually disrupting…? It is clearly a test page (its name is "Test"), it uses a private use language code (so no real language will ever use that code), and it is temporary – I will delete it once the testing is done. I was not fully aware of that test project though (that is, I stumbled across it once, but then forgot its language code) – had I been, I would have used it instead. I will move my test pages over there. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:09, 13 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Unable to create Wp/cnr/ pageEdit

Hello! I want to add some more pages to Montenegrin Wikipedia, but I'm getting an error: "You are trying to create a page without a valid ISO 639-1 or -3 code. This code either is not valid or does not belong to a language accepted for new Wikimedia projects. If you came here from any other page, please return back and fix the link and then create the correctly named page. If by any chance this is blocking you from creating any page which you think has a valid ISO 639-1 or -3 code or belongs to an accepted language, please let administrators know."

error screenshot

Montenegrin language has valid ISO 639-3 code, check here or here. Also, there is already 1,968 articles with wp/cnr prefix.

Please, explain what is going on and how to enable adding pages to this Wiki. Thanks! Millodarka (talk) 22:05, 4 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

About The 'juc' codeEdit

I tried to create Wp/juc with related subpages but the system doesn't allow me to do it. The code is for the en:juc language. Could somebody help please?Sdf (talk) 08:59, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. Because juc is classified in ISO 639-3 code as an extinct language, editing on incubatorwiki is blocked. Since this was decided in June 2022, the juc pages created before that exist. --Sotiale (talk) 10:30, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And Wp/zkt is as well? Sdf (talk) 11:13, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Since zkt is currently classified as a historical language, it is blocked for another reason. Under the current LPP, historical and extinct languages at least cannot have Wikipedia. --Sotiale (talk) 12:17, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please enable adding new pages to Montenegrin WikipediaEdit

Hi there, me again.

There was no reply on this one, so I posted the same question on a few different places (here and here).

I got answer on Phabricator and it pointed me back on Administrators' noticeboard.

So, please can you change the filter as suggested? Or, if the Syunsyunminmin is not right about the solution for this problem, explain what is happening and how to fix it.

Thanks! Millodarka (talk)

I think "cnr" meets Language_proposal_policy.
  1. Wp/cnr doesn't have a wiki yet. (Special:SiteMatrix)
  2. cnr is a valid ISO code[5].
  3. cnr is Individual, not Macrolanguage.
  4. The filter is preventing it.
Are there any policies that I don't know about? Syunsyunminmin (talk) 13:31, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It's disallowed because Montenegrin is not recognized as an eligible language. A 5th request (after 4 rejections already) is open but unlikely to be accepted. --MF-W {a, b} 22:14, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

So, are you saying Montenegrin Wiki can't be developed any further in the incubator? Millodarka (talk) 22:37, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @MF-Warburg!
Hope you can be a bit more elaborate and precise in your reply...
How and where you see exactly *(reference missing) it is not recognized as an eligible language?
Where do you see (non) likeliness being *(an official) feature and process stopper?
Thank you very much!

Hello I blocked by spamfilterEdit

trying to create Wp/pt-pt/Página_principal says the urlis wrong Wkperson10 (talk) 20:56, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, because pt-pt is not a valid code according to the policy. There is already a Wikipedia in Portuguese, you are welcome to edit there instead. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:26, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

KH Khmer CodeEdit

The handling of Wp/izhEdit

Good evening. I've been trying to edit the Ingrian Wikipedia test in the last few days, and I've noticed a lot of systematic errors present in most pages - grammatical mistakes, usage of Finnish borrowings where a native term already exists, stub entries with nothing but "X is a letter" etc. Now, I would be more than willing to help out (as witnessed by my recent contributions), but the sheer amount of pages to fix (683!), and considering the fact that even on the main page there are some very basic grammatical errors (Wikipedias instead of Wikipediaas, terve instead of tere), and that the article about Ingrian itself is a copy-paste of a grammar book, makes this a nearly insurmountable task.

I'm not sure what the best course of action would be here. Should we start again? Should we try to fix it all? Neither seem ideal. From what I can see, I'm the only somewhat active editor at the moment. Is there any precedent for handling these situations?

Thanks in advance. Thadh (talk) 19:21, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Thadh: Sorry about that! Most of the top contributor (in terms of number of edits) to the Ingrian Wikipedia are so-called "language hijackers" (people who claim to know a language but really don't) that are now either permanently blocked or inactive. There is a change they may actually all be sockpuppets of the same person. It seems like a huge mess, to be honest.
I have a proposal for you that is sort of mid-way between fixing everything and deleting everything: We make a (temporary) template called {{Wp/izh/Keep}}, and you can add that template to pages that should be kept. Once you think it is ready, we can delete everything that is not marked by that template.
This proposal will require a bit of manual work on your part (since you're the one who knows the language), but I think it could be done rather quickly. What do you think, does that sound like a possible solution? An alternative would be to mark stuff that should be deleted with {{delete}}, but given the ratio of pages that should be kept vs. pages to be deleted, I think it would be easier to mark the ones that should be kept. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 02:27, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jon Harald Søby: Yes, that sounds like a great solution, thank you! Thadh (talk) 07:33, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I tried to create a "Simple Japanese Wikipedia" and named the project "ja-simple" in accordance with the French version of the project name. However, the language code "jp-simple" does not exist, so I could not create it as an ordinary user. Please create the project as the project may not be as simple as the simple-French version. Thank you (I am not a Japanese speaker, so the sentence may seem a bit puzzling).--Kouichi Fan (talk) 11:24, 24 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"Nrn" ISO 639 codeEdit

The code "Nrn" isn't working, but it is assigned to the Norn language. Due to this, a Norn test Wikipedia can't be created, so something will have to be done. That Northern Irish Historian (talk) 00:19, 25 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The wiki won't let me create a page here. Rich Farmbrough (talk)

It cannot be created because it is a page without a prefix. What did you want there? Syunsyunminmin (talk) 16:45, 24 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I was going to leave a comment to the effect that the translation from 639-1 to 639-3 is flawed, there is no concept of a macrolanguage in 639-1. I really can't see why discussion pages shouldn't be edited. Rich Farmbrough (talk)
@Rich Farmbrough: Sorry about that, it is a quirk of the WikimediaIncubator extension. If you change your "test project" in the preferences to "(maintenance)", you should be able to create the talk page. I've filed a bug about this and will try to fix that when I have time for it.
