Wp/ber edit

Hoi SPQRobin,

I am hoping to revive Wp/ber and build a pan-Berber / Standard-Berber Wikipedia encompassing all Berber dialects and varieties. There are many enthusiastic people willing to contribute to such pan-Berber project. Also, an alternative language code for standard/unified Berber might be released soon.

So we might use your help soon as a member of the language committee.

I have spoken earlier to Gerard Meijssen through e-mail, and he gave me some good ideas too.

Tifinagh - Latin - Wp/ber - Wp/rif edit

Hi SPQRobin,

I am not against regional Berber Wikipedias at all (Wp/rif, Wp/shi, and Wp/kab which is fully functional). I think those regional Wikipedias have the absolute right to exist, just like the case of West-Vlams Wikipedia for example. Only my interest goes to a more unifying Berber project with wider scope.

About the Tifinagh letters. The official Tifinagh alphabet designed by IRCAM, and used in Moroccan elementary schools does not include the two letters ⵞ and ⴵ, but IRCAM did register them with Unicode as reserve letters (among many other ones). The funny thing is that these two letter-sounds are used in two of the three main varieties of Berber in Morocco, not to mention Algeria and Libya and Tuareg Berber varieties. The equivalent of ⵞ is: Č č (pronounced like: tch). The equivalent of ⴵ is Ǧ ǧ (pronouneced: dj). IRCAM just decided that these two letters are too regional and not significant enough in Morocco, and not worthy to be included in the official alphabet.

But from a pan-Berber point of view, ⵞ (č) and ⴵ (ǧ) are extremely important and indispensable.

I usually use Paul Anderson's (akufi.org) keyboard layout to type Tifinagh, but I think that even IRCAM's keyboard contains many extra Tifinagh letters, including ⵞ and ⴵ (using keyboard combinations).

I have some information that another code for literary Berber / standard Berber might be released soon. Otherwise we could go with a temporary code, or apply for a new ISO code if there are enough people and supporting linguistic materials behind the idea.

About the script for the pan-Berber Wikipedia project, the best thing to do is to use both Tifinagh and Latin (the Serbian Wikipedia also uses Latin and Cyrillic), in order to satisfy the different preferences of Berber readers and enthusiasts and to respond to the differences between Morocco and Algeria. The Berber Latin alphabet would be the default script (also for editing) for the capitalization issue (Tifinagh doesn't have capitals) and for general accessibility.

Speaking of the script, do you have any expertise on the double script technique? If you do, it would be great if you tried it on Wp/ber or on the other regional Wikiepdias.

Bedankt.

Ok. Ik sta zeker open voor de bijeenkomst. Houd me op de hoogte.
IRCAM recognizes ⵞ and ⴵ among many other extra Tifinagh letters that are not in IRCAM's official 33-letter alpahbet (used in schools). IRCAM was the one that registered a total of 55 Tifinagh letters with Unicode. So you still can consider ⵞ and ⴵ as IRCAM-approved Tifinagh letters. Or better, you can simply consider them as "Unicode Tifinagh". Have a look at this page of the IRCAM website. Besides, the font "Tifinaghe-Ircam Unicode" does support ⵞ, ⴵ, ⵠ, ⵒ,...and many other additional Tifinagh letters recognized by IRCAM (try them on your MS Word for example).
I tested the converter, and I noticed that it doesn't convert the Latin letter "Ɣ ɣ" to/from Tifinagh "ⵖ".
Also it doesn't convert "V v" to its Tifinagh equivalent "ⵠ". And it doesn't convert "P p" to its Tifinagh equivalent "ⵒ".
NB: The Berber language rarely or never features the sounds "P" (ⵒ) and "V" (ⵠ). The two Tifinagh letters (ⵒ,ⵠ) are used more to transcribe European names or terms that contain "P" or "V".
For the Webfont I advise you to use Hapax Berbère (for Tifinagh text). Hapax Berbère is free.
For the Berber texts written in Latin letters, I think Tahoma is the best candidate because it's sans serif and it doesn't confuse small "l" (ell) with capital "I" (i), unlike Arial and other sans-serif fonts. A lot of berber words start with the letter "i" which creates a confusion with "L" in capitalization. And Tahoma is very common in all computers. I know that it is owned by Microsoft, thus not free, but my question is: is there a trick to make all Berber Wikipedias look automatically in Tahoma font on all computers, without installing a webfont on Wikipedia's servers? (since Tahoma is present on all Windows-run computer)

--Aryaz-3D 22:27, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hoi SPQRobin,
Thanks for the Tahoma font thing.
If "č" and "ǧ" are difficult to type for some people, then so is the rest of the extended Latin letters used in Berber: ṛ, ṭ, ṣ, ɣ, ɛ, ḥ, ḍ, ẓ...etc!
So it's about using a keyboard that allows to type such characters. The same applies to Tifinagh. Many Berber enthusiasts are now starting to get used to extended and non-conventional keyboards allowing them to type "ɣ, ḍ, č..." as well as Tifinagh letters. Many people are developing personal keyboards that do just that. Others propose interesting Berber-friendly alternatives to the traditional and limited QWERTY and AZERTY stuff (see: www.akufi.org).
Besides, Wikiepdia editors can use the character help tools to insert those extra letters if they can't type them. Berber Wikipedia projects already have that tool (the dropdown menu under the "save" button that somebody created and named "Tarrifit / Tachelhit", maybe we could better call it "Berber letters" or something similar).
Also, the person that created the "Tarrifit / Tachelhit" tool made the mistake of confusing the Turkish letter "Ğğ" with the Berber letter "Ǧǧ" (the correct one).
Bottom line is: I think it's important that the conversion tool creates a conversion between Berber-Latin and Berber-Tifinagh in a consistent way with the Berber language's typical phonetics.
If it's possible to widen the syntax of the conversion, it would be great.
For example: Latin-to-Tifinagh:
"č", "tc", and "tch" all convert to: "ⵞ"
"ttc" converts to: "ⵞⵞ"
"ɣ" and "gh" both convert to: "ⵖ"
"ɛ" converts to: "ⵄ"
"dj" and "ǧ" both convert to: "ⴵ"
"ddj" converts to: "ⴵⴵ"
"x" and "kh" both convert to: "ⵅ"
"p" converts to: "ⵒ"
"v" converts to: "ⵠ"
"u", "o", "oo", "ou", "oe", "uu", all convert to: "ⵓ"
"i", "é", "è", "ee", "ie", "ii", all convert to: "ⵉ"
"a", "aa", "à", "á" all convert to "ⴰ"
NB: Tifinagh doesn't accept the doubling of vowels. So for example "aa" should be converted to "ⴰ". Like "Den Haag" would be "ⴷⴻⵏ ⵀⴰⴳ".
For example, "ou" is found in a lot of Moroccan and Algerian personal names (of writers, singers,...etc), due to French influence, while it's actual pronunciation is equal to that of the Berber "u", thus it should be converted to "ⵓ" (not "ⵓⵓ").
I am just beginning to scratch the surface here. If you're interested we could discuss this in detail, and maybe we can make a more comprehensive conversion sequence that reflects Berber pronunciation and spelling more naturally.
Bedankt
--Aryaz-3D 23:38, 23 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
I just noticed a problem with Wp/rif. Whenever I try to edit an article, I can only type in Tifinagh letters even when I use the standard Windows keyboard EN, or NL!
Everything you type appears in Tifinagh letters no matter what Latin keybord you use. Also everything appears in Tifinagh after you save it. Do you know where this problem comes from?
--Aryaz-3D 13:22, 24 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hoi SPQRobin! Ahaa now I'm starting to get the hang of these things. Thanks for the explanations!
The extra conversions I gave in my previous message were meant only for Latin-to-Tifinagh entire page conversion.
For the keyboard input conversion I propose these additional values: ['C', ", 'ⵞ'], ['B', ", 'ⴱⵯ'], ['J', ", 'ⴵ'], ['P', ", 'ⵒ'], ['V', ", 'ⵠ'], ['W', ", 'ⵯ']
About the Shi Coverter (hopefully to be available soon for all other Berber Wikipedias) I think this value: 'ⵖ' => 'γ' should not be present while 'ⵖ' => 'ɣ' should stay, because the Greek gamma "γ" is becoming increasingly abandoned by Berber linguists and writers in favor of the Latinized gamma "ɣ". 'ⵄ' => 'ε' should be replaced by 'ⵄ' => 'ɛ' (the use of Greek epsilon "ε" [capitalized as sigma: Σ in old Berber books!!!] is declining in Berber literature in favor of the Latinized epsilon "Ɛɛ"). Also 'ⵛ' => 'š' should be replaced by 'ⵛ' => 'c' because "š" is only used by some linguists for limited purposes, and "c" is the established Berber equivalent for the English sound /sh/.
In the other direction (Latin to Tifinagh) I think that all the synonumous / similar values (even the declining or the rare ones) should be present in the page conversion source code in order to broaden the conversion net. So all of these should be present there: 'ɣ' => 'ⵖ', 'γ' => 'ⵖ', 'c' => 'ⵛ', 'š' => 'ⵛ', 'ε' => 'ⵄ', 'ɛ' => 'ⵄ', 'č' => 'ⵞ', 'ǧ' => 'ⴵ' ... plus the ones I mentioned in my previous message.
What about the conversion from Tifinagh to Berber-Latin words with capitalized initials? Is there a possible solution?
Going back to the keyboard input tool, are you going to make an input tool that helps people type the extra Berber-Latin letters (č, ḍ, ɛ, ǧ, ɣ, ḥ, ṛ, ṣ, ṭ, ʷ, ẓ) in the Wikipedia editing box, like you did with the Tifinagh one?
Bedankt en groeten,

Ok man. I will see if I can do it myself.

Gelukkig nieuw jaar.

Help edit

I have translated media wiki translations for pnb.wikipedia.org, now I feel some improvement is needed in some translations. Your help is requested how can I do so or change them. For example 1 in the page mentioned in the brackets some changes will improve it and the improvement will change all such pages. Please guide from where I can do it. Some readers of our wikipedia (pnb.wikipedia.org) have requested for the size increase of fonts. Please increase the size of font equal to Urdu Wikipedia (ur.wikipedia.org). Thanks. PS: wt/pnb and wq/pnb are still pending. --Khalid Mahmood 15:14, 16 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

You can change the translations on translatewiki:Special:Translate as always. Is there anything specific you want to change in the Punjabi translations? You can change the font and font size through pnb:MediaWiki:Common.css. I have removed the font size so it should display larger now. Wt/pnb should be created soon (only technical staff can create a wiki), we are waiting for it as well... Wq/pnb is for later on. SPQRobin 16:07, 16 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello, please take a look at Help:Manual. You have space for a Pashto Wikiquote at Wq/ps. There you can create pages (starting with Wq/ps/) and you should also translate the interface at translatewiki.net, and later on you can request to move it to a separate ps.wikiquote.org. It is one of best moments of my life to see Punjabi Wikitionary 2 in normal form. I am thankful to you for your help and I am sure that it will be a big help as well as pleasure for Punjabi speaking community around the world. I will translate those messages which you have mentioned on my talk page. Well, I am afraid there is some problem in the new counter of Punjabi Wikitionary as it is showing less pages. Hi. What do you mean with an appeal? And you should know that the current policy does not allow the creation of wikis in historical languages, so you are allowed to work on Wp/osx but it will probably not result in a separate osx.wikipedia.org (like Wp/grc). Inuktitut translatewiki edit

I know this message has nothing to do with the Incubator, but I thought it would be easier to reach you here. On translatewiki, they use two different languages code for Inuktitut , one for syllabics and one for latin alphabet (ike-cans and ike-latn), but I don't think there is a point to divide iu since there is an automatic conversion tool. I thin only syllabics should be on translatewiki. Amqui 23:23, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

It is in theory possible to use the conversion for system messages, but this is unfortunately not implemented in the software. If you choose one of the variants on iuwiki then only the page content will be converted, not the interface. I already submitted this as bug 32971. And when it is implemented, Latin should be chosen because it has lowercase & uppercase letters whereas converting from Syllabics to Latin would only give lowercase. Request about the Talysh Wikipedia Translation. edit

Dear Robin, We decided to make an appeal to you with one request. For your information, we are currently working on Wikipedia in Talysh Language. The problem we face right now is the issues regarding the script. Right now, Talysh Wikipedia is registered with Cyrillic script. I would like to inform you that, majority of Talysh people living in Azerbaijan use Latin script, as the Latin script is officially accepted by the Republic of Azerbaijan since the alphabet change from Cyrillic to Latin immediately after the Soviet Union's collapse and the country's independence. Now in all schools of Azerbaijan Latin Alphabet is in use and young generation of Talysh people are not able to read Cyrillic alphabet completely. This Talysh Wiki will be followed mostly by young people and if they cannot read Cyrillic script, they will not be able to benefit from the knowledge which Wikipedia ensures. So it's very pity. But the Talysh people of old generation and as well Talyshes who live outside of Azerbaijan can read Latin alphabet. New Talysh alphabet is designed for use in Talysh texts, according to the phonological requirements of this language. So, the the situation is that, the most Talysh people live in Azerbaijan in their Homeland and use Latin alphabet. Talysh people who live in Iran use Persian script and Talysh people who emigrated to Russia use Cyrillic alphabet. But both of them, people who live in Iran and Russia can read Latin alphabet for sure, but the case is that, the young people who live Azerbaijan cannot read Cyrillic alphabet, they only can read Latin. As the majority of Wikipedia readers will be young people from Azerbaijan, they need Latin script for Talysh Wikipedia. So, we would like to ask you kindly to help us with this issue to add Latin script for Wikipedia in the Translatewiki alongside with Cyrillic 'tly' => 'толышә зывон', # Talysh. We would like to have: 'tly' => 'толышә зывон/tolyšə zyvon', # Talysh. So it means to add Latin script use for Talysh language alongside with Cyrillic in this link: http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/phase3/languages/Names.php?annotate=102460#l339 We would suggest to have 3 scripts in use in order to ensure readability for all users of Talysh Wikipedia and to escape any problem that can occur. We consider this is to be the best solution for this problem. We mean like this: 1. 'tly' => 'tolyšə zyvon', # Talysh(Latin) 2. 'tly' => 'толышә зывон', # Talysh(Cyrillic) 3. 'tly' => 'زبان تالشی', # Talysh(Persian) As we know this is in use for Qırımtatarca, Kazakh, Tatar and Serbian Wiki, I mean Latin and Cyrillic scripts. If this is not possible for Talysh Wiki, we would like to ask you to help us in doing it only in Latin , because Latin is readable for everybody (Talysh people who live in Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia, Europe) but Cyrillic is readable only people who live in Russia, not readable for the people outside of Russia. The person who opened Talysh Wiki suggested it in Cyrillic, because he lives in Russia. But we talk to him and he agreed to add Latin or to change it completely to Latin. We just want Azerbaijani Talysh people who use Latin, to benefit from Wikipedia's knowledge. As well, we wonder whether it is possible to do tly-cyrl and tly-latn for both scripts. If it is possible, it would be very useful for both alphabet users. This issue is very important for Talysh people who live in Azerbaijan and we will be very happy if you could help us with this issue. Thank you very much for your attention! Yours sincerely Jeyhun Heydar Talysh Wiki Translator --Erdemaslancan (talk) 09:08, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Thank you for the information. So either the translations in Cyrillic can be changed to Latin (if the other translators agree with that), or if Cyrillic is needed, we can indeed split it into "tly-cyrl" and "tly-latn" (and possibly "tly-arab"). And if needed, it may be possible to have an automatic text conversion between Latin and Cyrillic as on the Serbian Wikipedia. In any case I have sent an e-mail to the LangCom about this matter. Request about the Talysh Wikipedia Translation 2 edit

Dear Robin. Thank you very much for your reply. Please, help us. We currencly stopped working on Talysh WIki, because we face this problem, manin menu is in Cyrillic script and our language is registered with Cyrillic script in this link as 'tly' => 'толышә зывон', # Talysh http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/phase3/languages/Names.php?annotate=102460#l339 As I informed you before we want manin menu to be in Latin. I talked to all translators of Talysh Wiki. All agree that the best choice to split it into 3 scripts for all users in different countries. So, that means to have "tly-cyrl", "tly-latn" and "tly-arab". But we translators from Azerbaijan are interested in Latin script as we will write only in Latin. So, we request Talysh Wiki to be registered as 'tly' => 'tolyšə zyvon', # Talysh(Latin). When can it happen? Thank you very much for your support! best regards from Azerbaijan. Jeyhun Heydar

Hi, please see Wt/as (linked to from as.wiktionary.org) and its main page Wt/as/বেটুপাত. Once it is active again, and the localisation is complete, it can be considered for re-opening. Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 22:34, 30 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Robin. This might sound amateur, but I am new to wiktionary. I have been reading those pages since 2 days back. How do I make it active again? How do I add new pages. Everything seems to be locked. THanks Msaharia (talk) 22:40, 31 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Could you please give some more information? I suppose you are referring to as.wiktionary.org when you say that everything seems to be locked? The pages here under Wt/as are editable. Please also configure your preferences by selecting Wiktionary and entering "as", as explained in the manual. After that, you can e.g. enter a page title in the search box and follow the redlink you will see to create that page. Thanks, SPQRobin (talk) 23:42, 31 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello Robin edit

I need your help (again). Our wikipedia (pnb.wikipedia.org) reached at the mark of 25000th page. On this occasion our one user made a special colorful logo (as other wikis do on such occasions ) he posted it but the logo [5] didnt appear on our front page [6]پہلا_صفہ we want to keep it there for some time. Please either post yourself or guide us.

Hi, please note that pnb.wikipedia takes its logo from the local file pnb:File:Wiki.png, instead of File:Wikipedia-logo-pnb.PNG. Therefore, any changes which should appear locally as the logo must be uploaded on pnb:File:Wiki.png, not commons. I have now done this. --MF-W {a, b} 14:13, 1 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
    • Pages are counted if they have internal links, the pages without links are not shown in counting. We have experienced this in our wikipedia and wiktionary. Therfore, if you have observed, for many months we are not adding new pages and stopped making/adding new pages after number 250 in our wikiquote that is in incubator [7]. We are just adding new pages in old pages and planned that when our wikiquote will be normal we will separate them , for example [8]. Thank you.--Khalid Mahmood (talk) 07:23, 1 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
What do you mean by "they are not shown in counting"?! Of course they are counted. For example, the Punjabi Wikiquote currently has a bit more than 250 pages, as you can see here. It would be good if you could separate the pages already on Incubator, instead of waiting for the pnb.wikiquote.org subdomain. Regards, --MF-W {a, b} 14:13, 1 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

WARBURG:1.Danke, das ist sehr shon.--Khalid Mahmood (talk) 18:30, 1 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

    • 2. When a wikipedia or wiktionary is normalised from incubator stage, if any page has no internal link the page is not counted. We experienced it in our wikipedia and wiktionary. Here in incubator the counter displays excat number.--Khalid Mahmood (talk) 18:37, 1 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

South Azerbaijani Barnstar edit

  South Azerbaijani Barnstar
We really appreciate you for your help to creation of the azb translate entry :)

I see that you create and send many Barnstars to other users. It's the Tabriz municipality, it's famous and all Azerbaijani like this. It's sign of Tabriz and South Azerbaijan. It's for you. Regards. Arjanizary (talk) 17:57, 12 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Note edit

Hi, SPQRobin. I wonder why the South Azerbaijani Wikipedia omitted from the list at Main Page which are active projects and get their own site soon.
These are the other wikis that their name menthioned at that list:

Livonian Wikipedia:
Riffan Wikipedia:
Tuvan Wikipedia:
Minangkabau Wikipedia:
Wayuu Wikipedia:

Also, if you take a look at the South Azerbaijani wikipedia you can see that we are more active than these(at least the same).

South Azerbaijani Wikipedia:

I think that creation of the azb wiki exceeds the time that actually it's needed.(or at least it's my opinion-Let me know I'm wrong!)

It's a wiki, anyone can edit Incubator:Featured wikis. Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 16:59, 8 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Take a look edit

Hi, SPQRobin. Could you please take a look at here? By the way, We want to know what should we do now? What are the other requirements that are needed for creation the azb wiki? Thanks in advance. --Arjanizary (talk) 20:28, 10 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

The basic requirements are fine. The language committee should however make a decision to approve it or not, based on whether South Azerbaijani should stay on azwiki or be separated from it. SPQRobin (talk) 22:44, 10 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. By the way, is it possible that we know how they make their decision (approximately)? --Arjanizary (talk) 15:37, 12 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Also our test wiki doesn't have a analysis page at language Committee? What should we do? We should request or LangCom by itself makes it? RX--Arjanizary (talk) 14:46, 13 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
An analysis page is not needed; it's a redundant system. And if you want the language committee to make a decision, please remind them at meta:Talk:Language committee. I might maybe bring the topic up (again) soon. SPQRobin (talk) 22:49, 14 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your response. --Arjanizary (talk) 14:55, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Dear Robin edit

Hello, Robin. It's been a long time, hasn't it? :D I would like to ask about Wv/Ko. During a month, I searched the volunteer for Korean Wikiversity. And now, I successfully bring them to Wv/Ko! But I'm not sure it is enough.. If you have enough time, please glance at Wv/ko status. Thank you so much! Regards, Sotiale (talk) 09:05, 16 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, that's great. I proposed the approval of the Korean Wikiversity, I'm quite sure it will be approved and created soon. Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 16:09, 19 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Oh, thank so much! I will make more effort to contribute. The volunteers will be happy to hear that :D Regards, Sotiale (talk) 04:29, 20 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
mhm … betawikiversity says “To have a new Wikiversity site, you need ten active participants for the project.” KO has not 10. The LangCom seems to accept this proposal anyway. That's confusing me. (Though I don't want to prevent the creation of kowikiversity.) Kind regards, Vogone (SWMT) 10:37, 20 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wq/pnb invites attention edit

Dear Mr. Robin, your attention and support is required for normalisation of Punjabi Wiki Quotes (http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wq/pnb/مکھڑا). The project is active since March 2011 (http://toolserver.org/~pathoschild/catanalysis/?cat=0&title=wq/pnb&wiki=incubatorwiki_p) and it has been improved and looked after for almost two years and is ready for departure from Incubator.

It has 300 pages on variety of topics. If it is normalised it will stand at 46th position among the community of 88 Wikiquotes Projects (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikiquote). Almost in the center. And well above among 285 Wiki languages community.

It has and will have another distinction that it is in quotes at the top among all South Asian languages (including Hindi and Bengali). And it is a matter of pride that we are at top in this grouping in our region. The normalisation will be a boost for our other two already doing well projects: pnb.wikipedia.org and pnb.wiktionary.org. Thank you.--Khalid Mahmood (talk) 15:25, 20 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm writing to ask you, as a bureaucrat of this wiki, to translate and review the notification that will be sent to all users, also on this wiki, who will be forced to change their user name on May 27 and will probably need your help with renames. Hello friend! edit

Dear SPQRobin,

I am Nitika and I work with Centre for Internet & Society (CIS) with Access To Knowledge Team (A2K). The A2K team works with the Wikimedia community in India to expand Wikipedia and its sister projects. Over the past few months A2K team has put together a detailed Annual Work Plan for 2013–14.

For the coming year, A2K team has prioritized five languages and will be working closely to grow these language Wikipedia projects and I'm happy to share that one of these prioritized projects is Konkani Wikipedia. Konkani Wikipedia has been in it's incubation stage since inception in 2006 and A2K has great plans to put in all the effort to bring it as a live project. In addition, A2K team will also work closely with the Konkani community to organise translation sprints, release Konkani Vishwakosh under CC-BY-SA 3.0, strengthen the Konkani community, create more awareness about Konkani Wikipedia and more.

We are super excited to roll out plans for Konkani Wikipedia and your support and suggestions are extremely important to us. You have been one of the few people who have been actively contributing to Konkani Wikipedia and we highly value your suggestions.

To begin with, I'd request you to go through our detailed Konakani Work Plan and leave suggestions/comments/ideas on this page. If you'd want to get in touch with me to discuss the plan you can drop me a mail at nitika cis-india.org or drop a note on my talk page. I look forward to hearing from you soon and working closely with you to strengthen the Konkani Wikipedia community.

Thanks

Incubator extension edit

Some points:

  • Incubator_talk:Main_Page#Why_is_it_impossible_to_create_a_page_here.3F - I created a fix ([9], you have been spammed by mail) (PHP sucks).
  • Does CreateAccountTestWiki.php still work with the new login interface? (Which is the correct formatting of such links? &testwikiproject=p?)
  • Which magic allows creation of unprefixed pages by sysops on Incubator? Doesn't work on my test wiki
  • Test wiki selection box on Special:Search only appears if you choose "Advanced" settings. Can we put it out of the advanced settings and/or set "Advanced" to be shown by default?

Hi, I meant the Language Committee needs to contact an independent person who would then verify the project. You should not get verification yourself, since in that case you can make someone of your own contributors or someone you know do so. In such cases it is no longer independent verification. So please await until the Language Committee has found someone; you can however always suggest persons to contact. Thank you for your understanding, SPQRobin (talk) 00:00, 31 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

We do not provide such styles in our Incubator Common.css since we cannot easily/automatically copy it to the new wiki once it would be created. An important message about renaming users edit

Dear SPQRobin,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Konkani Wikipedia and multiple scripts edit

Hi SPQRobin, I'm involved in this discussion; please could you help me understand some things about how multi-script Wikipedias work? I'm asking you, because you have some background in this area.

  • Is it compulsory for multi-script Wikipedias to have a script converter?
  • Is it disallowed for pages in more than one script to exist side by side without a converter?

I'm trying to understand what is the right way forward for the Latin script Konkani articles: a dual-script Konkani Wikipedia, or a separate Wikipedia. Thanks, The Discoverer (talk) 10:40, 26 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi there, I noticed that you have been participating in the ancient greek incubator wikimedia community, and at the same time you are part of the language committee. Is the proposal at [15] still on and what needs to happen in order to move forward? Thanks Gts-tg (συζήτηση) 19:25, 28 Φεβρουαρίου 2016 (UTC)

Vlaamsche Wikipedia edit

Lotje ツ (talk) 05:43, 14 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Dag Lotje. Groeten, SPQRobin (talk) 11:04, 14 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Lotje ツ (talk) 05:14, 15 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Tunisian Arabic edit

As shown in the new edition of Ethnologue, Tunisian Arabizi (One of the Latin Scripts used for Tunisian) has been recognized as a common script for Tunisian Arabic. As it is the most used script in Internet, we will use it in Wp/aeb. I have slightly modified this method so that it can be converted to Arabic Script. I have created a script converter for Tunisian Arabizi and I will implement it with explanations very soon. However, I need to test it before. So, you are invited to change the name of Tunisian Arabic in Latin Script into Tounsi and change the editing software of Tunisian Arabic Wikipedia into Left to Right format. Thank you in advance. --Csisc (talk) 10:48, 15 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Importing into tcywiki edit

I see you will (apparently) be importing pages into the new Tulu Wikipedia. If you haven't already started, could you please try to ensure that this issue doesn't happen with that wiki, as it has with other recently imported wikis? I know a bot can come by later and fix the redundant pipes, but it would be great if it could get fixed as part of the importing process... - dcljr (talk) 02:19, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately I don't know a regular expression to fix this in the file that is imported into the new wiki. I now imported all pages the usual way. Hopefully we can find a solution by next time (which should then be added to the documentation). SPQRobin (talk) 11:34, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
OK. - dcljr (talk) 18:24, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

I have verified that the code invoked by w:WP:AutoEd/formatter.js (to be more specific, presumably the "piped wikilinks" code in Wikipedia:AutoEd/wikilinks.js) will not only make replacements like:

Фыщт → Фыщт

But also:

Maybe you/someone can modify that code to make substitutions like:

Фыщт → Фыщт

during importing. - dcljr (talk) 06:51, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mogoeilor, the infobox class appears to lack any CSS styling. You need to add it to to e.g. glk:MediaWiki:Common.css. To just fix the left/right problem, adding .infobox { float: left; } should work. Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 19:24, 21 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Special:SearchWiki on Main Page edit

Hi, I commented out the inclusion of Special:SearchWiki on the main page, because it was just showing a plaintext list of languages and the Go button didn't work. Yeah, I haven't maintained the extension for years, so I'm aware that there is outdated code and potential for errors and broken features. I hope to finally get around to updating the extension sometime soon... SPQRobin (talk) 17:54, 2 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Special:Chat edit

Hi Robin!

I wanted to let you know that I removed the chat.js/Special:Chat script from Common.js (and will remove the link from the main page after this) because of privacy issues with it. I know it's been there for a while now but once I saw it I couldn't really wait longer to remove it. The problem is that because it's loading an iframe when you visit the page it's instantly leaking the IP of any visitor to Freenode. If the community really wants it, however, I do think we can probably find a way to make it work. I'd want to bring it to Legal just so that they're aware but perhaps something like a 'click' through? An extra button when they visit the page warning them that they will be loading a page from Freenode and subject to their (linked) privacy policy? Something like that or similar should probably the privacy policy concern. Do you think that would work? Jalexander-WMF (talk) 08:56, 4 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Met vriendelijke groet, Ymnes (talk) 21:05, 6 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
SPQRobin (talk) 21:24, 6 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Heel graag!
Ymnes (talk) 19:01, 9 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
SPQRobin (talk) 10:25, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ymnes (talk) 16:34, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Livenws (talk) 18:28, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ymnes (talk) 18:55, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
De Wikischim (talk) 19:15, 11 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
SPQRobin (talk) 12:37, 12 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ymnes (talk) 07:01, 13 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
SPQRobin (talk) 10:00, 13 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ymnes (talk) 15:45, 15 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ymnes (talk) 18:18, 18 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
SPQRobin (talk) 22:36, 18 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ymnes (talk) 22:08, 19 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
SPQRobin (talk) 19:40, 20 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Groeten, SPQRobin (talk) 20:50, 11 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Weird edit histories in newly imported wiki edit

Can you shed any light on the issue raised at voy:hi:User talk:SM7#Weird changeless edits, at the newly imported Hindi Wikivoyage? I see that the page histories here in the Wy/hi test wiki don't show the same pattern of alternating "zero-changes" and "non-zero-changes" as those at hiwikivoyage. - dcljr (talk) 07:49, 29 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hm, as you said they have been imported two times. This is weird indeed, because this has never happened before. I do import by way of returning and re-importing when I get a time-out, but this has worked perfectly until now. I'll take another look later today. SPQRobin (talk) 13:53, 29 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Any further thoughts about this? I guess it's not causing any problems on that wiki, but it would be nice to get it cleaned up, if possible (assuming the cleanup itself doesn't cause any problems). Is it possible to remove the duplicate (re-imported) revisions without affecting the original ones, and without affecting any later edits made after importing was finished? - dcljr (talk) 22:36, 14 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

About Talysh Wikipedia edit

Hi, I'm basically working in a Azerbaijani Wikipedia and I'm writing this message for Talysh Wikipedia. 5 years ago some volunteers tried to open talysh wikipedia and they have already created at least 1.500 articles in talysh langugage. Today is everthing is different. Many people were disappointed and left because the site was not approved. Some volunteers are still hopeful and continue to communicate with social networks. Now I want to ask you question. What do we have to do to open the talysh wikipedia ? can you prepare a road map for us? Regards.--Baskervill (talk) 06:06, 11 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Baskervill:

In order to get a new language edition approved, there are a few things that must be done. First, the MediaWiki interface must be translated into the language (in this case, Talysh). This is done at translatewiki. Second, the project must have at least 3 active contributors per month. Another thing that could be improved is the length of articles; I'm noticing that many of the articles in Talysh Wikipedia (ex. this one) are very short. Hopefully this helps!

@SPQRobin: Anything I may have missed? DraconicDark (talk) 14:21, 11 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

as you have been inactive here on Incubator for more than a year (in log actions and edits), I had to request the removal of your bureaucrat and sysop rights per our inactivity policy. I want to thank you for your (more than a decade-long) service as an admin here and I do hope you will become active again in the future, if your time allows. I'm sure the community would be glad to have you back. Best regards --MF-W {a, b} 16:10, 8 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
