ISO 639-1: (rightsnone)Edit

Does anyone know why the ISO 639-1 part on the front page is incubator projects is followed by (rightsnone) instead of a simple (none) and how it can be changed? The use of rights renders the string incorrectly in languages that differentiate between singular and plural here (Skolt: jie leäkku) or for languages that add rights into the string's translation (Finnish: ei oikeuksia, i.e., no rights). This can't be changed to fit the usage here on the incubator because it is also used elsewhere in MediaWiki in its intended meaning. Thanks, Yupik (talk) 11:09, 3 January 2022 (UTC)

The technical reason is that the {{Test wiki/core}} template uses the rightsnone message to display "none". This is a cute hack, probably by SPQRobin, but unfortunately, as Yupik says, the word "none" may be translated differently in different contexts in some languages, even if it's the same in English.
It should probably be a translatable template with {{TNT}} or something along these lines, and "none" should be translated according to the right context. I'm not very good at using TNT, but perhaps Jon Harald Søby can help to make it?.. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 12:41, 3 January 2022 (UTC)
@Amire80, Yupik: So, converting this to {{TNT}} is... easier said than done. Mainly because {{test wiki/core}} is meant to show things in the user's language, while {{TNT}} (which doesn't even exist here yet, BTW) works on the page language level. In other words, if we don't modify {{TNT}} somehow, it would always show in English on the pages where {{test wiki}} is used. I think the most straight-forward solution is to add a message to the WikimediaIncubator extension for this purpose – and maybe even some more messages from that template if necessary – that are to be used in the template. This way the messages can be translated at Translatewiki, and they can be used here in the template with e.g. {{int:wminc-iso-none}}. Does that sound like an OK solution? Unable to create any new articleEdit

I am unable to create any new article in Wp/omp test wiki. While trying to create so, the process is automatically blocked. But I can edit the existing articles in the Wp/omp. What is the problem behind this? Can it be fixed? Haoreima (talk)

To be clear, see Wp/omp: as this is a dead language, it is not allowed to have new pages added. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:35, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
@Koavf: But what about enm and grc? Haoreima (talk) 06:41, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
Things changed after those projects were started. I'm not defending or refuting the policy, just closing the loop on this open thread. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:42, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

Language name translationsEdit

I have came across two strange translations for Aragonese and Asturian, corrected what I could find on Translatewiki (example: [1]), but I do not know where the strings come from to future project infopages (such as Wn/ar Wn/an). Could you tell me where to edit these, or make these changes yourself?

  • [for Aragonese] aragonéz → aragóniai
  • [for Asturian] asztúr → asztúriai
    • wikipedia article: w:hu:Aszturleóni nyelv (Asturleonese language), but Hungarian projects use the shorter asztúriai (Asturian)

Something about uun tests: Wp/uun and Wt/uunEdit

Per SIL change request 2021-042, the uun code has splitted to two codes: uon for Kulon and pzh for Pazeh, do we have any ideas that which language both tests are written in? And should they be renamed to uon or pzh? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 09:37, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Main page of both test states that they're written in Pazeh. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 12:11, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
Indeed, but how to move them? With so many pages I doubt if I can just move them by myself. Probably a bot work is required? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 12:19, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
Probably. Wt/uun can just be moved manually since they're only 15 pages. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 12:25, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
Done for Wt/uun one, for Wp/uun, I'd love to wait for a bot or AWB fan (there are several categories, modules and templates have Wp/uun prefixes). --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 08:00, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
A quick scan with AWB shows that there are only 260 total pieces, which is something that I could move if no one else wants (I do not see lots of modules and templates, tho.) I like monotonous tasks. Let me know while I'm asleep. —Justin (koavf)TCM 12:04, 29 January 2022 (UTC)

How are logos implemented in the test wikiEdit

I already saw minbei wikipedia and slovak wikivoyage having its own logos replacing the textless wikipedia with words and the wikivoyage is replaced by wikicesty. How do u do that??BoholMappingAndRoutes (talk) 04:08, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

Also Czech Wikivoyage has their own logo (though it's the same logo as with Slovak Wikivoyage). How that's achieved, I don't know, but I guess it is something that needs to be requested and set up in the test wiki environment. If you look carefully, you'll see that there is a small Incubator logo at the top left corner of the custom logo for the test wiki. Your localised version is something you can create on your own, you only need to download the exact font used for the logo (it may be a free typeface, given the nature of the project), and open the original logo in an SVG editor, replace the “Wikivoyage” text with text in your language, while keeping the style – so using the same font, using the same kind of word split you see, of course if your language does use Latin or Cyrilic typeset. Don't forget to convert text meshes to path meshes, to make sure the logo retains the font. You can use a free SVG editor called Inkscape, which is licensed under GNU GPL licence, one of the free copyleft licenses. Just make sure to save the resulting final SVG to Plain SVG instead of Inkscape SVG, because Inkscape SVG is designed to be understood and opened with Inkscape, and it uses groups with a special mode as layers you can turn off and on. It will be compatible with most of SVG renderers, but those renderers won't generally understand special flags that Inkscape is using for SVG workspace in editing environment. Plain SVG gets rid of these special elements and saves just the bare SVG data, no comments, no layers. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 21:09, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
And of course upload the modified logo to Commons, just make sure to include the original license and authorship of the original logo. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 21:11, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
@BoholMappingAndRoutes: As far as I understand, the filename has to be added to MediaWiki:Gadget-ProjectSpecificLogos.js. Once the logo is ready, and uploaded to Commons, you may notify the administrators on their noticeboard to make the changes. - Xbspiro (talk) 22:54, 5 February 2022 (UTC)

I am unable to create pages for translationEdit

I can't create Template:Welcome for translation. When I go to the page, I get the following comments:

Error: This page is unprefixed! You can create a page at Template:Wq/bn/Welcome/bn.

It is also not possible to translate MediaWiki messages. How can this be done?--খাত্তাব হাসান (talk) 08:19, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

@খাত্তাব হাসান, খাত্তাব হাসান: I think that you'll have to apply for permission to write pages or templates without prefixes for translations. Or Incubator has to implement translations module that would make translations like this easier and more managable. I would also benefit from being able to translate content of Incubator. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 15:44, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
@খাত্তাব হাসান, খাত্তাব হাসান: @Polda18: You may translate these pages as subpages of your userpage (for example: User:খাত্তাব হাসান/Welcome template/bn), and once you have done that, you may ask administrators on their noticeboard to rename the translated pages to their correct titles. As of now, normal users can't create unprefixed templates (or subpages of them thereof) nor can edit MediaWiki pages. - Xbspiro (talk) 22:22, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
@Xbspiro: Thank you, that's actually very useful to know. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 08:33, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

Can we use localised version of project namespace in project page prefix?Edit

Hello. I am participating in development of Czech Wikivoyage, and I'm curious. Can we use our localised version of the project namespace in the project page prefix or do we have to use the generic (English) name of the project? Some pages have been created with the localised version and a redirect has been created from the generic version to the localised version. If only generic name can be used, I guess this is an issue and has to be fixed.

If you don't know what I mean: The generic English name of the project is of course “Wikivoyage”, therefore the prefix for such project pages (that will be in the designated project namespace) is “Wy/cs/Wikivoyage:”. As far as I understood from the guide to importing Incubator wikis to their designated space, the generic name of the project and generic namepaces will automatically resolve to the defined localised namespaces, which in case of our project pages is “Wikicesty”. Some project pages have been created with the prefix “Wy/cs/Wikicesty:” and redirect from generic prefixed version has been created to this localised, is that okay or do we have to fix it in order so our project will be able to export/import to “cs.wikivoyage.org”? For example, Wy/cs/Wikivoyage:Osnova průvodce městem/kostra redirects to Wy/cs/Wikicesty:Osnova průvodce městem/kostra. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 13:49, 5 February 2022 (UTC)

Oh, and somewhat unrelated, but I think it's not really worth it making a brand new thread for this, since it is also related to our test wiki: I noticed that other test projects use the “Help:” namespace for their help pages. We have only one help page, however it is in main namespace with localised prefix instead. I proposed to move our existing help pages to the appropriate namespace and make new ones already in that namespace, but I got to ask – does it matter if the help pages are located in designated namespace with project prefix or located in main namespace with prefix constisting of project and language code as well as generic or localised namespace as part of the page name after the project prefix? Thank you in advance. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 20:56, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
If the help page belongs to the Czech Wikivoyage, start the title with the prefix wy/cs. All pages marked with this prefix will get exported to the new wiki when it is created.
I think you may go either with the standard Wikivoyage: for internal project pages and Help: for internal help pages, or you may go with localised ones. Just use one form consistently. If you use the localised ones, let the future exporter/importer know the namespace translations. However this nuance might be best answered by our actual exporters/importers (@Sotiale:, @Jon Harald Søby:, @Martin Urbanec:, @MF-Warburg:).
You may have to provide namespace translations (at least for the project namespace Wikivoyage) to developers as described on mw:Help:Namespaces#Localisation.
If the help page belongs to the Incubator in the Czech language, use Help:ENGLISH_TITLE/cs. - Xbspiro (talk) 22:04, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
Hello! I only reply here since I was pinged. While I did some imports, that's mainly because of me working on a tool simplifying importers' workflow -- I don't consider myself a "full" importer. If I understand how importing works properly, it should work as long as the localized project name is recognized by the future MediaWiki site. In other words, if cs.wikivoyage.org will recognize "Wikicesty" as the project namespace, all should be good. This is only an educated guess though, and I'd appreciate review/correction by others Xbspiro pinged. Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 22:15, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
This is correct. However, to avoid problems, as Xbspiro says, a project should stick to just one variant - so either name all pages "Wy/cs/Wikicesty:" or all pages "Wy/cs/Wikivoyage:", but don't mix it and also don't create redirects. --MF-W {a, b} 01:26, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
So in other words fix it, and I guess to the generic name. However, what about the help pages? I've seen other projects using the Help: namespace of Incubator with their project and language prefix, is that the recommended way? Thank you. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 08:26, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
The answer is already below. Everything from Wy/cs has already been fixed in the meantime. Answer about help pages has already been posted elsewhere where you asked originally.
Danny B. 10:07, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
@Danny B.: Okay, thanks. :-) — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 10:18, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

The correct answer actually is: Always use the generic project name. Furthermore: Never create redirects from one form to the other.
When the wiki is created the generic project name is always automatically part of the configuration while the localized name does not necessarily have to be. Also bear in mind, that the community can decide during the incubating phase to name the project different way, thus the pages with old name and links to them would become problematical while the generic name is eternal.
Using of localized name may cause problems with import of such pages to the newly created wiki. Redirects between localized and generic project name may cause partial or full overwriting of the content of given page and/or mess in its history.
Side note: This question has already been brought up by the same user 9 years ago.

Where to request deletion of a page?Edit

I have just came across a page (Category:Wp/pcm/Culture) which most likely is a spam page but I cannot find any pages in incubator where articles for deletion discussion is handled. C933103 (talk) 01:51, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

@C933103: Most templates here are made strictly for individual projects, but there are a handful of cross-project templates like {{delete}} (and even {{Ping}} and {{tl}} which I am using in this comment!) that can be used for issues like this. If you see nonsense spam anywhere in Incubator, slap on {{delete}}. —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:02, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

Missing message MediaWiki:wminc-code-collectiveEdit

Hi all, via Wp/sla I found that Template:Collective code is using the not defined MediaWiki message MediaWiki:wminc-code-collective. Could some interface admin please create the message? Thanks. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Raymond (discussioncontribs) 10:15, 25 February 2022 (UTC).

User:Raymond: Done with the code that was previously in that template. I'm not sure what needs to be modified to make Wp/sla show the correct link, though. --MF-W {a, b} 13:50, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
MF-W: thank you. Wp/sla looks good to me now. Probably a cache issue for you? Raymond (talk) 14:13, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
Raymond: Checking from another computer, it still says "namely the sla languages." --MF-W {a, b} 14:35, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
MF-W: Text after the disambig sign is now: "The code "sla" does not refer to a specific language, but to a collection of languages, namely the sla languages.". Previously is was "<wminc-code-collective>" only. From my side it looks OK. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Raymond (discussioncontribs).
I was referring to the "sla" languages part. But fixed now. --MF-W {a, b} 01:20, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

Interslavic languageEdit

Recently, a new artificial language has emerged, which is Interslavic. It was created by a Czech programmer that basically took all words in all Slavic languages, analyzed them according to their thesaurus, and created a unified collection of grammar rules for written and spoken Interslavic. Because various Slavic nations use eighter Latin or Cyrilic script, Interslavic had to be adapted for both scripts. Some nations use both scripts as well (like Serbia). Because of that, Interslavic Wikipedia or any other Wikimedia project in Interslavic language would be based on Serbian model. So far, Interslavic had been merely just mentioned in some journals, spoken about with its creator in few news article, but really no other media apart from an official Interslavic news channel exist in Interslavic language. Interslavic is an artificial language, kind of like Esperanto, but the goal of Interslavic is different. Goal of Esperanto was unify speech across the entire globe, and to understand the language, you actually have to learn it (to speak it as well). Interslavic is only aimed to unify Slavic languages. You still need to lear the language to speak it, but to understand it, the only thing you need is to know one of the Slavic languages. Medžuslovjansky is a hybrid between all the Slavic languages and dialects. It would be really great if Interslavic Wikipedia or any other project of Wikimedia in Interslavic language existed. It would make it possible to share informations with friends and people across Slavic nations without any significant language barrier while not resorting to knowledge of English language. Of course, to contribute in Interslavic projects, one has to actually know the language. So far, only some people can actually speak and write in it. I don't, but I might learn it as well. Knowledge of Interslavic would be beneficial for tourist guides or flight attendants travelling between Slavic countries. Once you know Interslavic on an advanced conversational level, you can pretty much understand every single Slavic language in the world. That's another benefit of Interslavic. You need to learn just one language to understand all in the same language family. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 13:35, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Sadly, it doesn't currently have its own ISO 639-3 code. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 13:39, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

It turns out, it does. English Wikipedia article seems to be outdated in this manner then. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Polda18 (discussioncontribs).
Agreed that Interslavic has some strengths over most constructed languages in that it's not some thought experiment or game or a new attempt to replace English as a global lingua franca with some arbitrary new words and grammar. Note that qis is an ISO code reserved for local use, i.e. it's not a part of the standard that everyone recognizes, but it's part of a series of codes set aside that anyone can use for any purpose, so someone other than SIL may use qis to represent a completely different language. Between the fact that virtually no one really knows this language (tho hundreds of millions of Slavs will kind of understand it), and that it has no actual ISO code, I don't think creating a project in this is feasible. Also, as I recall, the Language Committee are very conservative about approving constructed languages or extinct languages versus living, organic ones. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:22, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
I see. So that basically means the Czech Wikipedia article doesn't have globally appliable informations. I guess it's gonna take quite a long leap to register Interslavic as an internationally recognized language in order for it to receive an official global ISO 639 code. Thank you for your explanation (and signing my comment, I forgot). — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 07:02, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
It seems that 2021-001 request is still in Pending status, I guess that that request may not be handled until at least Jan/Feb 2023 (there are four requests stucked at Pending for 10+ years). --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 02:35, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
I've noticed that, yes. I keep an eye on it. But given the extent of the details the request has, based on those details I think there's a high probability of it being accepted. Anyway, I found out that there is an unofficial Interslavic Wikipedia that isn't hosted on Wikimedia servers yet. I might propose tranfer under Wikimedia Foundation once the ISO code proposal is accepted. The current logo will have to be changed for the official Wikipedia project logo, but it may be used on the main page. The thing is, it's already quite well established, the only matter would be transfer of the content. Files would be transferred to Commons maybe (where possible, given by lisence), articles and other stuff would become part of the new wiki. It does have duplicate content, kind of like Serbian wiki, which also uses both Latin and Cyrilic scripts. One copy is in Latin, the other is in Cyrilic. The prefered version is Latin however, because project pages are in Latin script as well as namespaces. If they decline, then that's okay, I'll let it be. But if they agree, then it should be easier, because there already is content, right? But it should also be accepted by Foundation. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 06:46, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
I didn't know about the "qis" ISO code, how did you find it? Afaik, the planned and publicly requested identifier has always been "isv". I mean, if "qis" can grant us a Wikipedia, then great, though I'm confused. The isv.miraheze.org wiki has actually been created with intention to become a Wikipedia, changing logo and all that stuff is not an issue at all. I don't think it has any duplicate content, it just uses a converter like Serbian Wikipedia does.
As for viability of this project, I think it has great potential (compared to Church Slavonic, which is incredibly more difficult). Interslavic is understood pretty well (except maybe Bulgarians, which I noticed in one conversation video on YouTube) and written (basic grammar from their native language applies) by Slavic speakers to a decent degree with some help of this dictionary that is actively being filled and maintained. Spoken language is mostly exercised in Discord servers related to the project, though I didn't partake so I can't say with precision how. But I can say there are at least a good hundred of people who can chat with each other in Interslavic fluently, out of many thousands interested in it (it's reasonable to expect only a dozen of those will actually edit the new Wikipedia though). -Vipz (talk) 22:07, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
@Vipz: I found "qis" on the Czech Wikipedia article, however, it seems that this code has regional meaning, it is reserved for regional usage, which means it can represent a different language elsewhere. It's not an official language code for Interslavic, and "isv" wasn't approved yet, it is still pending request, so right now, Interslavic doesn't have an official ISO 639-3 code. I don't know how long it takes to review the ISO 639-3 code request, I don't know how many new submissions are there in the first place. The fact that it is something a standardization organization has to approve, makes things incredibly difficult. — Polda18 (talkcontribs) 05:21, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

Chagatai WikiEdit

GD, Admins, I need a piece of advice re an old word I believe might be Chagatai. There is an Ottoman Turkish بكلك‎ (Modern beylik 'principality'). The same word can be found in old Crimean Tatar language. Is there a similar Chagatai word? The problem is with this word origin belyak (unit). I have an old scanned Chagatai-Turkish dictionary by Alai bin Mukhibbi Ash-Sharif issued in 1868 but it's difficult to read and I'm stuck. If you help me I'll send you the dictionary scan, it may be handy --NP (talk) 14:02, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

I don't think you can get an answer to this question here. --MF-W {a, b} 18:03, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
The test wiki probably exists, but as an extinct language, it's normally not allowed to create new articles anymore unless Incubator administrators considered elsewhere. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:53, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

Templates and infoboxesEdit

I asked a question there about Templates and infoboxes but I realized it may be better (and more likely to get answer) here. As Help talk:FAQ hasn't been active for more than 3 years. So my question is: how can I import templates from the English Wikipedia to a project here? I tried without success on Wp/ajp/مناقيش. Thanks for any help you can provide. A455bcd9 (talk) 08:55, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

I eventually managed to do what I wanted to, but it's such a pain... Would be great to add a tutorial about template import. A455bcd9 (talk) 10:15, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
Unfortunately, it's always annoying to try to re-use enwiki templates, because they have such an unnecessarily complicated structure, using lots of other templates, modules and stylesheets. --MF-W {a, b} 11:18, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

Number of articlesEdit

According to Wp/ajp/Main Page there are 8 articles, however when I click on "8" and go to Special:PrefixIndex/Wp/ajp I can see 10 articles (+ the main page). What's the reason for this difference? A455bcd9 (talk) 12:15, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

The count is done by Template:Wp/ajp/NUMBEROFARTICLES, which gives the number of pages in Category:Wp/ajp. --MF-W {a, b} 12:49, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! A455bcd9 (talk) 15:56, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

About script converterEdit

Hi, I want to ask where can I apply an automatic script converter for Wp/mnc? As I am now unifying the page name into one script. 墜星璃月 (talk) 02:12, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

Script converters need to be coded for every language/script individually. See mw:Writing systems and T17161: A generalized language conversion engine for some starting points. --MF-W {a, b} 22:39, 27 March 2022 (UTC)
Recently I have created Module:Wp/mnc/Mnc-Latn-translit from English wiktionary and applied to several pages and it works well (However capital letters still need to be added to the module). So can we involve this in the script converter? 墜星璃月 (talk) 08:54, 22 May 2022 (UTC)

New function for AddPrefix gadget in Visual EditorEdit

Hello, all! I have added a new function for the AddPrefix gadget so that it works for Visual Editor as well as code editors. When you add a link to another page now in Visual Editor, it will automatically include the prefix for the test wiki you are editing. I am also looking into fixing some problems with the code version of the gadget, but that is still under development.

If anyone has any suggestions for improvements (whether to this specific gadget or to something else), please do bring them up here, and I'll see if I can help. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 07:42, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

WikiProject self-startingEdit

If your incubated instance has a (central) page for information and coordination of status and plans of its own development, than consider shaping it as a WikiProject self-starting and linking to this Wikidata, so that there is an overview on who is doing what, where and how. Also if you can think of better way to organize info this please suggest. -- Zblace (talk) 08:42, 11 April 2022 (UTC) Few corrections and clarrifications inserted --06:03, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Check again now if it reads better :-) --Zblace (talk) 06:03, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
Basically, I have created that page in the Esperanto Wikivoyage when it was already in the Incubator to coordinate high-priority work. Other communities can be inspired be the concept to do something similar. Or not :-)
In Esperanto Wikivoyage (now on its own subdomain) we are slowly testing a similar concept - but using the Esperanto WUG's project management tool for continued community maturation of the wiki. (but it is only test and not very promoted yet) --KuboF Hromoslav (talk) 15:47, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
I still have no idea what a "self-establishing of a wiki" is nor how it is related to Incubator. --MF-W {a, b} 00:06, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
It is not super-specific or exclusive to Incubator (hence link also to Wikispore.org), but Incubator is where most of Wikimedia Wiki instances do self-establish (as in gather minimum content, users and protocols) to function. Maybe there is a better term that includes all aspects of development, but I went with this one. --Zblace (talk) 16:28, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
It's basically a "WikiProject" for shaping up a new wiki, organized with an overview of all resources, planned course of action, progress, and discussion collected in one place. Nothing irregular, just labeled as a WikiProject, which fairly enough describes it well. -Vipz (talk) 03:37, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

Desktop Improvements updateEdit

Hello. I wanted to give you an update about the Desktop Improvements project, which the Wikimedia Foundation Web team has been working on for the past few years. Our work is almost finished! 🎉

The goals of the project are to make the interface more welcoming and comfortable for readers and useful for advanced users. The project consists of a series of feature improvements which make it easier to read and learn, navigate within the page, search, switch between languages, use article tabs and the user menu, and more.

The newest features
  • Table of contents - our version is easier to reach, gain context of the page, and navigate throughout the page without needing to scroll. It will be tested across our pilot wikis this week.
  • Page tools - now, there are two types of links in the sidebar. There are actions and tools for individual pages (like Related changes) and links of the wiki-wide nature (like Recent changes). We are going to separate these into two intuitive menus.
How to enable the improvements
  • It is possible to opt-in on all wikis using the global preferences.
  • On wikis where the changes are visible by default for all, logged-in users can always opt-out to the Legacy Vector. There is an easily accessible link in the sidebar of the new Vector.

The improvements are already visible by default for readers and editors on more than 30 wikis, including Wikipedias in French, Portuguese, and Persian.

The changes apply to the Vector skin only. Monobook or Timeless users are not affected.

New version of the AddPrefix gadgetEdit

Hello, everyone!

For the past few weeks, I have been working on a replacement of the old AddPrefix gadget that was a bit faulty. The new gadget, which is now enabled by default for everyone, works quite differently.

The new gadget will remove prefixes when you start editing, and it will then add prefixes when you save the page. This will happen for templates, links and categories. This way, editing in the Incubator should be as similar to editing a normal wiki as possible.

It should work in all wikitext modes, including the 2017 wikitext editor ("wikitext in Visual Editor"), and most importantly, on the mobile site. If you notice any problems with it, please report them here, and I will try to fix them as soon as possible. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:33, 6 May 2022 (UTC)

This is beautiful! I love the way this new gadget works. Thank you.--Samatics (talk) 13:03, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
Truly a happy coincidence that its development was underway when I encountered the previous version's bugs. :) -Vipz (talk) 06:42, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

Please exempt categories from being automatically added to the main category. I don't want all categories to automatically become part of [[Category:wp/grc]]. And if possible, make this gadget not mandatory. It does not help me at all. --PastelKos (talk) 09:12, 14 May 2022 (UTC)

@PastelKos:, it can be disabled in Special:Preferences in gadgets tab. -🇺🇦Slava🇺🇦Ukraini🇺🇦Heroyam🇺🇦Slava🇺🇦(talk)🇺🇦 09:33, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
@PastelKos: I have now made it so that only articles are automatically added to the root category. Note, however, that the root category will not exist at all when the wiki is imported to a proper domain, so one should not rely on it for a category tree. It is more of a maintenance category for the Incubator itself. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:23, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
@Jon Harald Søby: Can automatic categorization to the root category be disabled? I prefer having all content categorized into their specific categories. -Vipz (talk) 19:30, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
@Vipz: It is important to many (most?) projects because that's the way number of articles are counted like {{Wp/khw/NUMBEROFARTICLES}}: Count the number of pages in that category. So ideally all content pages for a test wiki should be in the root category. The root category is not carried over when a wiki is imported, so it is really just an Incubator maintenance category of sorts. I am looking into the possibility of adding it automatically in the Wikimedia Incubator extension, however, instead of it having to be added (semi-)manually to each page. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:03, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello, how to create a link to an other incubator wiki? Exemple at Wp/rmc/Šerutňi_sera link to Fiňiko kalo čhib (Kaalengo tšimb).--Adehertogh (talk) 13:53, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

Koavf, take a look on the page Wp/rmc/Šerutňi_sera, the link Fiňiko kalo čhib (Kaalengo tšimb) is red because of the automatic add of the prefix Wp/rmc/ before the prefix Wp/rmf. --Adehertogh (talk) 16:48, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Did you see Help:FAQ#How_to_link_to_prefixed_pages?? Do you have the AddPrefix extension enabled? —Justin (koavf)TCM 16:54, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
Works without addprefix extension. But if anyone else makes a change on the pages i'll be back...--Adehertogh (talk) 19:09, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
@Adehertogh, Koavf: There was a check for this so that you could link to almost all pages from other test wikis without a prefix being added, but it did not work if you just linked to the info page ("Wp/xyz"). This should be fixed now. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:23, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
@Jon Harald Søby: could you exempt templates? It is crucial to be able to preview templates without having to fix the link everytime you start editing. -Vipz (talk) 18:39, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
@Vipz: How do you mean? The gadget will add the prefix when you click the "preview" or "view changes" buttons as well as "publish", if that's what you mean. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:02, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
@Jon Harald Søby: It appears to not be the case when the "Show previews without reloading the page" setting is turned on, which I have. Templates do show if I have that setting turned off, but I prefer otherwise. -Vipz (talk) 21:20, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
@Vipz: I think I have made the gadget work with that feature now, please test. (You may need to do Ctrl+F5 if it is not working right away.) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 23:41, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
@Jon Harald Søby: Yep, works now! Thanks, and good job once again, this is a great tool. -Vipz (talk) 23:43, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
Ficou legal a nova versão do gadget que remove prefixos ao editar e adiciona automaticamente ao mostrar a previsão, por exemplo. Assim fica mais fácil traduzir livros da Bíblia nos Wikcionários.

InfoboxEdit

Hello, I'm currently working on Iban language wikimedia incubator page and I would like to ask several question. Can we create an infobox on the page? And if yes, can someone show me how to create it since I don't have any clear idea on creating on a page? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Song GK (discussioncontribs) 14:09, 26 June 2022 (UTC).

Change the phrase "Tungkaran ..." to "Laman" (it means 'page')Edit

Hello, I changed the interface of Banjar massage "Tungkaran Tatambaian" (Main Page) become "Laman Tatambaian" at translatewiki.net based on community agreement. But in wt/bjn, when going to main page, still "Tungkaran ...", not "Laman ...". Can anyone provide a solution? Thank you Ezagren bicara 10:03, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

@Ezagren: The message was edited today. MediaWiki import new translations periodically, not immediately. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh (talk) 11:55, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. Regards, Ezagren bicara 11:07, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
