Incubator:Administrators' noticeboard

This is the page to request attention from test administrators, administrators and bureaucrats. Note what they can do.

Administrators can:

  • protect and unprotect pages
  • delete and undelete pages
  • delete images and other uploaded files
  • block and unblock users
  • edit the interface and other protected pages
  • use the built-in rollback functionality

Test administrators can do the same (except protecting and unprotecting pages), but only within their tests (therefore they cannot edit the interface).

  • Exception: As rollback is only appropriate to use in cases of vandalism, test-administrators can use that feature anywhere they see vandalism.

Bureaucrats can do all the above, as well as:

  • grant administrator/bureaucrat status
  • grant/revoke test-administrator status
  • grant/revoke bot flags
  • rename users [now mostly obsolete in favor of global accounts and unified login]

Note: Only Stewards may remove adminship or bureaucratship. If you want this to be done go to Requests for permissions at the Meta-Wiki.

If there is no response, you may wish to try the IRC channel, #wikimedia-incubator.

  • For deletion requests, use I:RFD for test deletions and {{delete}} for speedy deletions.
  • For user rights (admins, test-admins, bots, ...) or renamings, see I:A.

An administrator keep undeleting test pages Edit

Hello, I have notice that an admin, User:Jon Harald Søby, keep undeleting a test page which deleted by 2 different admins. And even creating a category for the test page after the test page being deleted twice. I found that it is quite disruptive as there are already a test wiki for admins to test. I hope someone can aware this issue. 49.197.238.30 01:16, 13 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Who is it actually disrupting…? It is clearly a test page (its name is "Test"), it uses a private use language code (so no real language will ever use that code), and it is temporary – I will delete it once the testing is done. I was not fully aware of that test project though (that is, I stumbled across it once, but then forgot its language code) – had I been, I would have used it instead. I will move my test pages over there. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:09, 13 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I am unable to create a page Edit

Hello. When I try to create a main page for a test Wikinews it says that the language doesn't have a valid ISO 639-1 or a valid ISO 639-3 code. However, the language has both. I've tried making the page use Lat and La, and yet neither seems to work. The page is here. Thanks! Helloheart (talk) 04:23, 15 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Helloheart: Hi. As you saw on Wn/la before you yourself edited it, the Latin Wikinews has been rejected by the language committee. That's the reason it is not listed as a valid language, so that people won't waste their efforts on a project that will not get approved. I will now revert your edits to Wn/la. Please enable adding new pages to Montenegrin Wikipedia Edit

Hi there, me again.

There was no reply on this one https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Incubator:Administrators%27_noticeboard#Unable_to_create_Wp/cnr/_page, so I posted the same question on a few different places (here and here).

I got answer on Phabricator and it pointed me back on Administrators' noticeboard.

So, please can you change the filter as suggested? Or, if the Syunsyunminmin is not right about the solution for this problem, explain what is happening and how to fix it.

Thanks! Millodarka (talk)

I think "cnr" meets Language_proposal_policy.
  1. Wp/cnr doesn't have a wiki yet. (Special:SiteMatrix)
  2. cnr is a valid ISO code[4].
  3. cnr is Individual, not Macrolanguage.
  4. The filter is preventing it.
Are there any policies that I don't know about? Syunsyunminmin (talk) 13:31, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It's disallowed because Montenegrin is not recognized as an eligible language. A 5th request (after 4 rejections already) is open but unlikely to be accepted. --MF-W {a, b} 22:14, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

So, are you saying Montenegrin Wiki can't be developed any further in the incubator? Millodarka (talk) 22:37, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @MF-Warburg!
Hope you can be a bit more elaborate and precise in your reply...
How and where you see exactly *(reference missing) it is not recognized as an eligible language?
Where do you see (non) likeliness being *(an official) feature and process stopper?
Thank you very much!

The handling of Wp/izh Edit

Good evening. I've been trying to edit the Ingrian Wikipedia test in the last few days, and I've noticed a lot of systematic errors present in most pages - grammatical mistakes, usage of Finnish borrowings where a native term already exists, stub entries with nothing but "X is a letter" etc. Now, I would be more than willing to help out (as witnessed by my recent contributions), but the sheer amount of pages to fix (683!), and considering the fact that even on the main page there are some very basic grammatical errors (Wikipedias instead of Wikipediaas, terve instead of tere), and that the article about Ingrian itself is a copy-paste of a grammar book, makes this a nearly insurmountable task.

I'm not sure what the best course of action would be here. Should we start again? Should we try to fix it all? Neither seem ideal. From what I can see, I'm the only somewhat active editor at the moment. Is there any precedent for handling these situations?

Thanks in advance. Thadh (talk) 19:21, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Thadh: Sorry about that! Most of the top contributor (in terms of number of edits) to the Ingrian Wikipedia are so-called "language hijackers" (people who claim to know a language but really don't) that are now either permanently blocked or inactive. There is a change they may actually all be sockpuppets of the same person. It seems like a huge mess, to be honest.
I have a proposal for you that is sort of mid-way between fixing everything and deleting everything: We make a (temporary) template called {{Wp/izh/Keep}}, and you can add that template to pages that should be kept. Once you think it is ready, we can delete everything that is not marked by that template.
This proposal will require a bit of manual work on your part (since you're the one who knows the language), but I think it could be done rather quickly. What do you think, does that sound like a possible solution? An alternative would be to mark stuff that should be deleted with {{delete}}, but given the ratio of pages that should be kept vs. pages to be deleted, I think it would be easier to mark the ones that should be kept. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 02:27, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jon Harald Søby: Yes, that sounds like a great solution, thank you! Thadh (talk) 07:33, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Liuxinyu970226 thats true i has contacting with them!
Thanks!

Wp/mni-beng as a test wiki Edit

I want to start a new test wiki for Meitei language alias Manipuri language (ISO code: mni) but in Bengali script (ISO code: Beng). Earlier, Meitei language wikipedia (mni.wiki) was successfully approved as a wikipedia from here. But it's written in Meitei script (ISO code: Mtei). Since mni wiki (in Mtei script) already exist, may I be given the permission to create a test wiki with a prefix "Wp/mni-beng" or "Wp/mni-Beng" (a combination of ISO codes of mni language and beng script)? Important to note is that Meitei language is widely written in Bengali script in Bangladesh as well as India despite the revival of Meitei script. Both Mtei script and Beng script are official scripts for mni language in Manipur. Bengali script is still used in (1) Indian Prime Minister's Office for writing Meitei language, (2) Vikaspedia (Government of India's agriculture encyclopedia), (3) Manipur Government's official websites (other than English) and in various newspapers too. I tried to create a page with the very prefix but it's not possible, as a notice box appeared saying it's wrong prefix or if not, I should request to admins to allow the prefix to be unblocked from the auto-block. Haoreima (talk) 10:18, 31 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ideally, both scripts should be used in one wiki. Is it maybe possible to add a script converter on mniwiki? --MF-W {a, b} 14:44, 2 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
MF-W Sir! We don't have that mechanism as of now. Plus, the Bengali script using Meitei language has heavy Bangladeshi accent, vocabulary, style that it can be considered as a separate dialect in some case. Even the Ethnologue stated this fact. For that, we also have w:Bangladeshi Meitei language. The Punjabi wikipedia has two, one in Gurmukhi script (pa wiki) and the other in Shahmukhi script (pnb wiki). Just like Chinese wikis have zh wiki, zh-classical, etc, is it possible to allow us to start a test wiki? --Haoreima (talk) 15:01, 2 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
MF-W The Meitei script using Meitei language is usually linguistically pure or attempts not to add loanwords most of the time. It even have w:Meitei linguistic purism movement. So, I believe that the two could be considered separate. Even in Google Translate, two sections are planned to be added for Meitei language, first one is already added called "Manipuri (Meiteilon)" whose code they set as "mni-Mtei" and the remaining one is in its Beta version (soon to be publicised) and is "mni-Beng". --Haoreima (talk)

Montenegrin Wikimedia Incubator Edit

I want to contribute to the Wikimedia Incubator for Montenegrin, but the creation of new test articles in the Incubator is disabled. I am not discussing the eligibility of a Wikipedia in Montenegrin, only the possibility of creating new test articles in the Incubator since one of the premises in the 5th request for Montenegrin is that it needs to have active contribution, but we cannot contribute when the creation of new test articles in the Incubator is disabled. Can somebody enable the creation of new test articles in the Wp/cnr/Početna stranica? @MF-Warburg purposefully ignored my question on his talk page and didn't answer it even after five days, but he responded to everybody else on the same day they posed their question. Plus, he edited this page 21 hours ago which proves he is active. I don't think he is being professional in doing his job here. He's been on Wikipedia for 17 years, maybe it's time for him to retire and somebody else to step in his place. He has a habit of ignoring people's questions which makes him totally unfit for an admin. In February of 2023, two users asked him very politely to further clarify and justify his claim that Montenegrin "is not recognized as eligible" for a test Wikimedia Incubator. He very rudely ignored both of their questions, but he has replied to all later questions on different subjects to other users, usually on the same day they asked them. He also failed to respond to @Syunsyunminmin who asked very concisely, after laying out all Wikipedian principles she is aware of, whether she is missing some information as to why the Incubator for Montenegrin is disabled. He failed to reply to user @Liuxinyu970226 on multiple occasions. This gives me reasonable doubt to conclude that he is not professional in fulfilling his task here, so I will inquire into where I can report him to have him removed from his position. I would love if somebody could give me a proper answer to my question about the Montenegrin Wikimedia Incubator and why is it disabled? It's a test wiki and we should be allowed to create test articles in order to increase the likelihood of having a real wikipedia one day. Thank you in advance. Blu145 (talk) 09:25, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you for describing my response speed in such a positive way, which I feel is not deserved. - The creation of pages is blocked for all ineligible language codes. Montenegrin is currently not recognized as eligible, because the language committee has not found it to be "sufficiently unique that it could not coexist on a more general wiki. In most cases, this excludes regional dialects and different written forms of the same language." (as the m:LPP says). --MF-W {a, b} 13:32, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The description is perfectly accurate and deserved and if I didn't write that I'm gonna report you, you would probably ignore this post as well. But I don't see where do you pull the information that Montenegrin is officially considered "not eligible". That may be your subjective opinion but the 5th Montenegrin request is still open and has lots of support. In fact, most of the opposition comes from Serbs. And you didn't even read my question, I asked about enabling test articles on the Incubator, I didn't ask why is there no Wikipedia in Montenegrin. But even if a Montenegrin wikipedia never sees the light of day, some changes will have to happen. The false, non-existent 19th century German invention called "Serbo-Croatian" that 0,2% claim as their mother tongue in all four countries today has a Wikipedia, and it's basically a Croatian Wikipedia 2.0, and all other three standards that are also "not sufficiently unique that they could not coexist on a more general wiki" have their own separate wikipedias. Montenegrin is in fact orthographically the most unique of the four because it has additional two letters. So either all of them are gonna merge into one, or we are eventually going to have our own Wikipedia. I still don't see why we shouldn't be allowed to at least write articles in the Incubator. 62.4.55.104 13:44, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well dear all above, I'm afraid the biggest matter that why Montenegrin can't be considered an eligible language for Incubator to test, is due to this meta assessment page: Croatian Wikipedia Disinformation Assessment-2021, especially its 3rd suggestion:
Encouraging the affected communities to discuss the possibility of re-merging Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian language projects into the original Serbo-Croatian language projects to re-align with the practices of other pluricentric languages with unified Wikipedia projects; including but not limited to Chinese, English, German, Spanish, Tamil, Korean, and French language Wikipedias.
@editors of that meta page: NNair (WMF), MNadzikiewicz (WMF), Xeno (WMF), Ainali, Minorax, Morneo06, DerHexer, Whym, Quisqualis and GeneralNotability: Is this suggestion also affects Montenegrin, so that Montenegrin contents should also be considered to merge into the existing Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 03:53, 17 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I am perfectly fine with just one Wikipedia existing for all four standards of the same pluricentric BCMS language. But I consider it very wrong for three standards to have their own wikipedia, and a fourth common Serbo-Croatian wikipedia to exist, but not a Montenegrin one. There are literally no differences, zero, between Bosnian and ijekavian Serbian. In Montenegrin you at least have iotated forms with ś and ź and radically different syntax. But it's still all the same language. And it's very unprofessional of admins to have double standards for different languages. Bosnian is perfectly eligible to have it's own wikipedia, and Croatian and Serbian too, even though they are far from being sufficiently unique, but then for Montenegrin all of a sudden we have the strictest policy. I think the best solution is to have just one wikipedia in two scripts, Latin and Cyrilic, where forms of every standard will be acceptable, depending on who is writing the material. Also, this would be a huge improvement in article quality, since Serbian and Croatian editors would now have to reach a consensus on certain grounds and supply their claims with actual references, especially when it comes to writing articles on history and historical figures. The other solution would be to transform the Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia into the Montenegrin one, but again that wouldn't be fair to all the other languages that have perhaps even bigger regional differences but don't have separate wikipedias. But if no one ever merges the Serbian, Bosnian and Croatian wikipedia into one, then we need to have a Wikipedia for the Montenegrin standard as well. 62.4.55.104 05:20, 17 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Request to Create Test Wiki for Kawi (old Javanese) Wikipedia Edit

I am about to create a test wiki for Kawi or Old Javanese Wikipedia, but unfortunately the ISO 639-3 for Kawi language which is "kaw" does not detected by the system. This project is tend to reuse and revive the liturgical language of Kawi on Wikipeda.

The profile of the Kawi language can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Javanese

Case study for relevant project is Sanskrit Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanskrit_Wikipedia Ilham.nurwansah (talk) 07:51, 18 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Ilham.nurwansah: Hello! Wikimedia's language proposal policy doesn't allow extinct/ancient languages, which is why you can't create any pages in that test wiki. Note that some ancienct language editions of Wikipedia existed before that policy came into place, and it does not work retroactively, but it is very unlikely that any new ancient language editions will be approved. Sorry. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 13:22, 21 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Old Saxon article Edit

@That Northern Irish Historian: Hello. Wikimedia's language proposal policy doesn't allow extinct languages like Old Saxon. The info page for the Old Saxon Wikipedia Incubator was erroneously marked as "open" instead of "rejected"; I have updated its status accordingly. @Jon Harald Søby But there are still existing pages prefixed as "Wp/osx/"? Shouldn't they be also deleted? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 11:11, 22 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Semiprotection from LTA Edit

Hi - could one of the local admins please semiprotect Wp/rmn/Lačharibaskoro kontesti‎ and Wp/na/Adolf Hitler? These are being targeted by a persistent LTA. He uses a VPN so blocking the individual IPs doesn't do much good. If you could revdel some of the more deranged and abusive edit summaries that would be good too. Thank you in advance - Antandrus (talk) 16:30, 19 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Common.css for Wp/bdr and Wp/dtp Edit

Hello! I would like to request the creation of MediaWiki:Wp/bdr/Common.css and MediaWiki:Wp/dtp/Common.css with content from MediaWiki talk:Wp/bdr/Common.css and MediaWiki talk:Wp/dtp/Common.css respectively. Thank you. Ultron90 (talk) 13:26, 24 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello. Please explain what they are needed for. Also, if I see it correctly, you have not yet contributed to Wp/dtp. Do you have any connection with the community? --MF-W {a, b} 16:12, 24 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello. I am currently trying to provide both communities with templates for infoboxes and have found that Common.css is needed for the infoboxes and other templates to function properly (correct me if I am mistaken). The current active members of both communities are a part of smaller groups within Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia and I have agreed with them offline to help with templates. If you need further verification from members of both communities or require that I also contribute to Wp/dtp as a prerequisite, I am open to do so. Ultron90 (talk) 03:11, 25 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for the explanation, I have moved the pages. --MF-W {a, b} 21:20, 27 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Blanking Edit

Please why do continue making my publishing in the Moore Incubator difficult, anytime I create and want to publish I get notification that the page is blank because I deleted when I haven't. Please fix this issue quicklyAlhaj Darajaati (talk) 15:15, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Common js for Wn/bn Edit

Dear administrators, Is it possible to add this JavaScript code (or only the 'develop' part of the current version) to 'MediaWiki:Wn/bn/Common.js'? (Script by Syunsyunminmin) Thank you. Asked42 (talk) 08:16, 17 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This is for an easy submit function designed to submit an article for review. While I understand that Bengali Wikinews may not currently be very active as a test, this tool could be valuable in simplifying the article creation and submission process. Asked42 (talk) 08:17, 17 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Asked42: I have added it, with a few minor changes. Please let me know if anything is not working as it should. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:45, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is working fine. Just a request, would it be possible to change the text 'প্রতিস্থাপন' to 'নিরীক্ষণের জন্য জমা দিন'? Asked42 (talk) 14:18, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Just something I noticed: on mobile, the button works as a link to edit the page, while on the desktop version, everything is fine (without installing script). Asked42 (talk) 16:50, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Could someone kindly take a moment to review the matter and requests? Thank you. Asked42 (talk) 16:40, 21 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
