Find a way to limit Incubator:Featured wikis entries

edit

Really, I'm not sure whether this is a good place to ask about concerns about this Incubator: namespace page that is a part of Incubator's mainpage itself.

For recent one year (maybe), some users (e.g. @Пан Хаунд, NikosLikomitros, Es Krim 5 juta Rasa:) "diligently" added too many entries to this page, lead it and Incubator Main Page explosively growthed. I don't know why such additions are benefit for us, this already break the normal formattion of main page. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 06:00, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Liuxinyu970226. Hello. You could see that after your warning in August I didn't add wikis to the table if it had already contained of 10 Wikipedias.
I also think that if the rule exists, we don't have to violate it.Пан Хаунд (talk) 06:34, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Are all the wikis listed actually active? Feel free to remove those who aren't. --MF-W {a, b} 09:10, 19 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
That seems not easily work-able, even I removed some, there are still some other users diligently re-add them just based on their judges. Currently we consider projects that have at least 3 active users (neither bots, nor anonymous, and perhaps nor socks) in recent months, include this month (just by checking catanalysis tool) are "active projects waiting for approval (sic)". TBH, this looks like too very easy to satisfy to be useful, so I wonder that should the requirement for approval-able projects be better improved? So activities of these projects can be more convincing to everyone, to believe that they shall be approved, rather than questionable activities. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 12:01, 29 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Liuxinyu970226 Thank you for informing me on the discussion. I haven't added any wikis apart from Karakalpak this year; in the contrary one month ago I removed Adja Wikipedia which was inactive. I think that the rule should be that the project is active for two to three months in order to add it there. I haven't contributed in the explosive growth, but I have removed a few wikis, particularly the approved ones. NikosLikomitros (talk) 14:02, 29 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I totally agree with activity for at least 3 months, and should better be persistence activities. But stuck on 3 users may still lead negative interests for such activities, shouldn't this be upgraded to be 5 users? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 15:07, 29 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello. I only added Central Dusun Wikipedia based on the table of wikis highlighted that showed active status. I work with the community of the project personally, and the contributors expressed concerns that their efforts are not tangible or noticeable as the main page status is a significant motivator for them. I have no issue with the list of the main page increasing so long as the projects are considered active, and I consider it more of a positive result to see more active projects shown on the main page. It is very difficult to get communities to participate willingly without them seeing the results of their activeness, and the main page is what keeps them motivated. If the rule is upgraded to 5 active users per month for 3 months, I'm afraid their willingness to contribute might go down as many already find it hard to contribute for 3 months straight in the current rules for active status. Therefore, I don't see having a large list of active projects on the main page as a bad thing and prefer to keep it that way as a motivator to keep active. Ultron90 (talk) 03:30, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Ultron90 There are too many cases where some projects are only having 3 active users in some random, non-persistence months (e.g. 3 in March, then down to one or two in April, May, and suddenly 3 or more in June...), are you really sure you're agreeing multiple adding and removing just based on one-month activity? And given the cases of Wp/mnc and Wp/ryu where both are having histories of "activities" by sock accounts, I would rather believe that there are still likely cases on the de facto listed projects, how can that problem be resolved just by adding them? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:38, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Liuxinyu970226 I wasn't implying that they should be added if they are only active for one month. I was saying that I support that if it is a project that is considered active (3 users for 3 months straight, the current rule), then it should be featured on the main page regardless of how many are in the list, to encourage continued activity. If it is just one month of activity, then it shouldn't be featured. I would prefer the featured list to be coded to be dynamic so it auto updates by itself based on the catanalysis data (I initially thought that this was how it gets featured), but I don't know how to do that. Regarding sock accounts, I think it is up to the Language Committee to investigate and determine if indeed the users are sock accounts once a complaint has been lodged. Even if the limits are increased, sock accounts can just be increased too. Ultron90 (talk) 05:07, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Ultron90 Also, it's really a problem for main page being too long, since it can only lead more and more difficult on loading it, especially for mobile devices, as I've tried, the current mainpage already waste 1.25 G memories for loading, it won't be so before the Featured wikis list being explosively populated, just remember the comment code of that page:

CONTRIBUTORS: if your test wiki is active, you are allowed to add it to the appropriate section; but only up to 10 projects should be featured per column at the same time.

Where, still, Пан Хаунд is violating it. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 06:19, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Just set the page protection to "admins-only", so those "diligent" users won't bloat the list. Users may request a project to be featured (or removed) on the list via the talk page or through admin notice. Veracious (talk) 03:34, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Liuxinyu970226 It is unusual that adding some text causes such a high memory load on a page unless there is a glitch somewhere in the code. Maybe we need the mainpage to be recoded for better memory management? I personally have no problem loading the mainpage using mobile so I have no proper view on this loading issue. I hope other users or admins can give their view on this. Ultron90 (talk) 10:41, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello, creating an interwiki link such voy:Brno on Czech Wikipedia correctly forms the URL https://cs.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Brno, but this URL redirects to the main page of Czech Wikivoyage in the Incubator, ie. https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wy/cs?goto=mainpage and from there further to the actual main page at , while it should correctly redirect to the actual article, i.e. the destination should be https://incubator.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wy/cs/Brno. I found this broken for other projects in Incubator too, e.g. Indonesian Wikivoyage.

We would like to promote Wikivoyage in Wikipedia and the broken interwiki links along with a hardcoded sister project linking system that utilizes interwiki links prohibits us from effectively doing so. In the mean time, I read in FAQ that this should be possibly, which suggest that the current behavior is wrong:

You can specify a normal URL, and it will redirect to the page on Incubator (xyz.wikiproject.org/wiki/Page → incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wx/xyz/Page)

Is this a known problem? What can be done to have this fixed and make interwiki links redirect to the individual articles again? --Blahma (talk) 11:30, 10 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

User:Blahma: thanks for mentioning this. In the past, it did work correctly, I think. I reported it at phabricator:T355018. --MF-W {a, b} 12:53, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Info pages for deleted test-wikis

edit

Cf. I:TESTSTATUS. I think we need a new category for test-projects that were deleted because of language problems and for projects that were deleted because the code is a valid ISO code, but can't be approved e.g. because the language is extinct. These: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] solutions don't satisfy me. --MF-W {a, b} 15:34, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Heads up that your Wp/sjt is only visible to admins. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:53, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Link fixed. --MF-W {a, b} 21:44, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Comment To be fair, their associated RFL pages (Votic, Ter Sami and Classical Japanese) should also be accounted, or else there will likely to have other users who just re-created them with language problems previous happened. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 05:10, 16 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

How to put text under the Wikipedia logo on an incubator wiki!

edit

DISCLAIMER: This trick only works properly on the "Vector Legacy" version. If you are using "Vector 2022" the logo will not look right.
Most versions of Wikipedia that you can find on the Incubator do not have words under their logos. However, if you go to the main page on the Chinook Jargon version of Wikipedia (and a couple other pages), you will see the following logo:

Now for the cool part

edit

In order to replicate this and put a similar logo in an incubating wiki that YOU edit, you must:

  • Take a screenshot of the blank, textless wiki logo that you see on the incubator.
  • Crop the screenshot so that it only has the logo in it. Make sure there's enough space for the text below. Do not resize the logo.
  • Add text underneath the wiki logo. (The Wikipedia logo text is in the Linux Libertine font, but I used Times New Roman.)
  • Upload the edited screenshot to Wikimedia Commons.
  • Click "edit source" on a page from your wiki and add the following bold text:

<div style="position: absolute; left: -201px; top: -145px; width: 10px; height: 28px> </div>

  • Replace "File:ChinookFakeLogo.png" with the file name of the image you just uploaded. (containing the correct file type and the "File:" prefix)
  • Click "publish changes" to save it. The text should be under the Wikipedia logo, but a second Wikipedia logo will likely be visible behind the first one. The logo that is behind the other one is your "fake logo."
  • To adjust the position of the fake logo underneath so that it is completely behind the real one, change the "px" values next to left: and top:
  • INCREASE the PX value for "left:" to move the logo RIGHT.
  • DECREASE the PX value for "left:" to move the logo LEFT.
  • INCREASE the PX value for "top:" to move the logo DOWN.
  • DECREASE the PX value for "top:" to move the logo UP.
  • Your fake logo will NOT be in the correct position on either source previews or non-source edits, so the only way to check if your logo is in the correct position is to click "Publish changes" every time you move the image.
  • Since both PX values will (probably) be negative, this could be even more confusing.

The position of the Wikipedia logo does not vary between pages, so you will be able to copy and paste your logo to ANY article, even if the article is on a different-language version of Wikimedia Incubator.
P.S. You will not be able to remove the Incubator egg from the top left corner of the logo, but it still is cool. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by POSSUM chowg (discussioncontribs).

Using a z-index, you can put lots of things above or below lots of things. E.g., I put a photo underneath the logo on my userpage at en.wp: w:en:User:Koavf. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:17, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Salar Vikipediyası

edit

I have been making Salar additions from dictionary sources on Wiktionary for a while now. And it's only recently that I noticed that the Salar Wikipedia had an attempt and came to review it. But the situation on Salar Wikipedia is deplorable. Tons of words and suffixes that do not exist in Salar are written on the site as if they existed, as if this were the Salar language. By Salar, I thought we meant the language of the Salars in Xunhua Salar Autonomous District, but there is no such language here. With my experience in Salar, I will edit the pages written under the name Salar on the site and remove non-Salar words and replace them with Salar words. While doing this, you can check it with the references, as it will most likely be added to Wiktionary.

@ऐक्टिवेटेड् to use the infobox template style, you'll need to add "infobox template style" css code to MediaWiki:Wp/mag/Common.css like this (at line 332). You can request one of the interface admin at I:AN to create/copy the css page. NinjaStrikers «» 13:56, 5 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Revert vandal

edit

Hello. User:Mario The PS2 Guy has fucked up many pages. Here [7] they started randomly replacing Megleno-Romanian words into Turkish words, or making up the grammar. They have done this in every single page of wp/ruq [8] [9] [10] [11] [12], in some cases moving the articles making up a name. I am not sure I can express how disruptive this is. They've also apparently done a lot of edits in the Megleno-Romanian Wiktionary which in which everything is actually Turkish [13] [14] [15] [16]. In another occasion they wrote a Megleno-Romanian page for Gagauzia in which everything is in Turkish [17]. In another they created a page for Iraq which is only the Turkish name of Iraq and a map [18]. To clarify, Megleno-Romanian is a language close to Romanian, both Romance languages, it has nothing to do with Turkish and should not look similar to it. This user has just decided to start destroying the whole incubator project. Please block this user and mass revert all of their edits. Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 20:17, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Wp/ruq/Çerna, Tulça, Template:Wp/ruq/Evropa kartası, Wp/ruq/Kupa, Wp/ruq/Oşińi, Wp/ruq/Romıniya (actually an original page by them, in a made-up language), Wp/ruq/Rumînia (yes the article already existed and they created a second one for Romania), Wp/ruq/Türkiya (another original page in made-up language), Wp/ruq/Ukraina (another page with this random Turkish-based grammar). There is also Wp/ruq/Țırnăreka which for some reason it is not letting me move back to Wp/ruq/Țărnăreca. Please help me revert this vandal's edits.
Also, 2A02:C7C:2F20:6B00:F286:20FF:FE16:8A44 is them in IP. They've also created some Wiktionary pages, evidently wrong as for example here they put a Romanian diacritic ț in a word in Gagauz which is a Turkic language and rather uses ţ [19]. I made a location map template

edit

I'm really bad at wikitext, but this might be the only map coordinate template on the entire Incubator that actually works. So far it only works for the U.S. states of Washington and Oregon, and the Canadian province of British Columbia, but this is some serious sorcery. This was an absolute pain in the @$$ to calibrate, but it somehow... it works.

Template fields

edit

HORIZONTAL_OFFSET and VERTICAL_OFFSET: Determines where the map appears on the page. I couldn't make it wrap the text without the mark appearing in the wrong place between wiki skins.
LATITUDE: This is where you enter the latitude of a place.
LONGITUDE: This is where you enter the longitude of a place. LONGI and LATIT determine the position of your red dot.
PLACE_NAME: The name of the location.
I'm pretty sure that this would work well with other wikis, if anyone wants to make a page about some random town or mountain in the pacific northwest

Wp/chn/Tvqwumv7 Wp/chn/Si7alh (thawn) Wp/chn/Bankuba, washintan-ili7i Wp/chn/Biktolia Wp/chn/Ki7lawna7 Wp/chn/Kamlups Wp/chn/Bankuba (thawn kopa Kanada) Wp/chn/Si7alh (thawn) Wp/chn/Polhen (thawn)

I will likely add support for various other locations as well. POSSUM chowg (talk) 20:31, 12 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I found that there is a weird test project of Wp/std. According to en:ISO 639:std, this is an undescribed language which are used by the Sentinelese, who are known to be an indigenous tribe in voluntary isolation. There is lack of contact between the Sentinelese people and the rest of the world as they do not allow outsiders onto their island. Several problems after moving to translated namespaces

edit

Hi, I need help.

After the namespaces was moved (from the original name) to the local (translated) names, we found several problems in bew.wikipedia.org.

  1. The number of article seems decreasing (from 2500 to 2343).
  2. Many pages (with namespace prefixes are not redirected automatically), such as https://bew.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Istimewa:Statistik&action=edit&redlink=1 (supposedly, this is the statistic page).
  3. Files with the prefix File: are still not moved to the new translated prefix.

I'm looking for the solution for these problems.

Interslavic

edit

Can someone please help me? Earlier this month, a test project has been created for Interslavic: Wp/Isv Wikipedia. There are a few questions I'd like to ask with regard to this:

  1. First of all, Interslavic already has a wiki outside Wikimedia space at https://isv.miraheze.org/, founded seventeen years ago to serve as a Wikipedia clone. If would be good if its content (470 articles, templates, modules, interface, transliteration scheme etc.) could be imported to the Incubator, so that their history will be preserved. Can this be done, and if so, how?
  2. Much of the user interface has already been translated to Interslavic at Miraheze.org. What can I do to make it work for Wikipedia and the Incubator? I have created a portal at Translatewiki.org and asked a question to Support, but nothing seems to work, nobody responds to my questions and the language code appears to be disabled for some reason.

It's probably stupid questions I'm asking, but even though I've been active on Wikipedia for over twenty years now, I find it hard to find my way through all the technical stuff. IJzeren Jan (talk) 10:36, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

  1. Yes (assuming that the content is all actually correctly licensed: it is listed as being CC BY 4.0, which is appropriate, but there could be--e.g.--some media that needs to be reviewed). An admin can do this by first exporting the pages as XML and then importing them here at Special:Import. Alternately, you can copy and paste and use an appropriate method of crediting the original authors, such as posting to the talk page.
  2. Translations are always handled at translatewiki, for better or worse. Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong here.
Not at all stupid questions. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:49, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much! The content is indeed licenced as you wrote, and there are no problematic media, as far as I can see. I am an admin of the wiki at Miraheze, so here's my next question: Is this the right place to request importer access? IJzeren Jan (talk) 21:07, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Requesting to create Waali incubator with language code wlx

edit

It would be an honor for Waali language with the language code=wlx to be added to the Wikimedia incubator. The Waali language holds immense significance for the community. It is the most spoken language within the Wa municipality, the regional capital and its surrounding towns and villages, and serves as a cornerstone of it’s cultural heritage. However, it faces a concerning reality – the spoken use of Waali is declining at an alarming rate.

This decline poses a serious threat to the future of the language. If left unchecked, the Waali language may face extinction, taking with it a valuable piece of natives’ cultural identity.

It is believed that the Wikimedia incubator platform presents a powerful solution to preserve and revitalize Waali to get live in the Wikimedia space. By incorporating Waali into projects like Wikipidia and others. Zakaria Tunsung (talk) 11:36, 29 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Issue of Multiple scripts for Santali

edit

Hello Community,

As you might be aware, Santali 20 is written with multiple scripts. But currently, Santali Wikipedia is only available in the Ol Chiki script. I don't know if you are aware of this or not, but there is a serious unhealthy controversy within the Santali language speaker community on which script to use. There are two major camps, the one supporting Ol Chiki and the other advocating for the Latin Santali alphabet. The bitterness between the two camps can be seen in the the communications sent to the Unicode Consortium when there was a proposal to encode Ol Chiki 21. Santali speakers online tend to be sharply divided into either of the two camps. There are some videos (in Santali) 22, 23, 24, 25 where the bitterness and intolerance can be seen, the controversy has even caused people to protest on the streets.

Now, coming to the issue at hand, as you would agree, when one learns to read new script in adulthood, the speed with which one can read the new script cannot be compared to the speed that one would have achieved if the script was learnt since childhood. This is the problem with the Ol Chiki script, unfortunately, it is not universally taught in all of Santali speaking areas. As a result, most speakers who read Ol Chiki, have learnt it in their adulthood, and have become a part of the Ol Chiki camp. The ones on the Latin camp on the other hand, have learnt to read the Latin alphabet since childhood, as English is commonly taught all over Santali speaking regions, these are the users who find Ol Chiki hard to read.

When it comes to areas where practicality matters, like the India Civil Services exam 26, everyone resorts to using the script that would be 'practical', Devanagari in this case, because Hindi is also taught in most Santali speaking areas.

Either of the camps does not wish to see the other succeed.

Wikimedia Foundation, has unfortunately been made a party to this controversy. Ideally, in keeping up with its policy of making knowledge accessible to all, Wikimedia Foundation should also allow for Santali Wikipedia to be available in Santali Latin as well.

I, along with a few others, have decided to take a middle ground in this controversy, we wish to write articles in Latin Santali, and have them available alongside Ol Chiki Santali. We can read and write Ol Chiki, but like most Santali speakers, we cannot use it as naturally and quickly as we use Latin.

Please let us know what would be the best way for us to proceed.

At the moment, we have been writing here: 27

Hi there, hi Koavf,

I'm facilitating this year Wikimania round table about Minority languages and Wikimedia, Friday August 9th, 10:00am. We would like to have a speaker or two from Wikimedia incubator, either a facilitator who helps various community to set up their incubator wikipedia, or a local contributor focused on one linguistic community, who can therefore share with other wikimedians the challenges of early days incubator Wikipedias.

Also, do you know of relevant wikimedians knowledgeable enough on Wikipedia incubators and traveling to Wikimania 2024 ?

Module:Wp/isv/Navbox has incorrect page content model.

Thank you for noticing, I've been wondering why some modules didn't work. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to fix it myself, so I hope someone with the appropriate rights can help here.
By the way, would someone by able to explain to me why Module:Wp/isv/Citation/CS1 and Module:Wp/isv/Alphabet don't work? Cheers, IJzeren Jan (talk) 23:52, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Module:Wp/isv/Alphabet works flawlessly as long as I know, I have corrected some prefix-related errors (you forgot to insert Wp/isv/ before Alphabet, e.g. -- this should've been ) in a template you had created (Template:Wp/isv/Kartka_država), please check if that is the error you're referring to! ;)

As for Module:Wp/isv/Citation/CS1, you invoked it wrongly in the base code of Template:Wp/isv/Cite_web if that's what you're referring to (you wrote where you should've written ). Also, you did not (again) include prefixes in Module invocations inside Citation/CS1, like Module:Citation/CS1/configuration or Module:Jezyky (those which should have been written as Module:Wp/isv/... instead). I've already corrected it ;) (and I'll be creating the missing Modules of Citation/CS1 too after making this answer).

Best regards, Iohanen (João) (talk) 03:47, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and feel free to contact me whenever you need help, although I'm not an Admin, I've been managing and improving Wp/hrx since 2020.
Again, best regards, Iohanen (João) (talk) 03:48, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
The problems are — most probably — solved, check Wp/isv/Albanija which had errors in Cite_web. Now what's left is to wait an Admin to change the page content model of Navbox ;) Iohanen (João) (talk) 04:00, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
  Done: log Syunsyunminmin (talk) 05:01, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much! This indeed seems to have solved the issue. However, I still have three questions:

  1. Why doesn't the template show in, for example, Template:Wp/isv/Slovjanske jezyky? All it says is {title}. What am I doing wrong?
  2. The complaints that Module:Wp/isv/Alphabet can't be found have stopped, but it still doesn't seem to work.
  3. What can I do to implement a transliteration systeem like here? At Medžuviki this is done by means of gadgets, but I am not allowed to create MediaWiki stuff here.

Any help will be much appreciated! Cheers, IJzeren Jan (talk) 18:04, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@IJzeren Jan Hey! I've solved the first problem ;). I'll investigate the second when I'm able to use my PC, since I'm not home rn. The third question is better answered by an Admin, although I will try giving a look at it when I get home :) Iohanen (João) (talk) 18:40, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@IJzeren Jan What would be the expected outcome of Module:Wp/isv/Alphabet? I've looked at it on https://isv.miraheze.org/ but it seems to be the same thing. Iohanen (João) (talk) 20:12, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for solving problem #1! :) As for Alphabet, all I know is that it plays a role in transliterating text to Cyrillic. But I suppose it might not work unless the necessary gadgets (like https://isv.miraheze.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-alphabet.js) are installed. Sadly, I'm not enough of a programmar to really understand how all these things work. IJzeren Jan (talk) 21:56, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I think you're right and that would possibly solve both problem #2 and #3. Only an Admin from Incubator can create a MediaWiki:Wp/isv/Gadget-alphabet.js, so you need to request it (either here or there) Iohanen (João) (talk) 22:23, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Personal question

if a wiki is graduated from incubator and got created, who will be an admin for it? MRidhaAJ (talk) 14:42, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

No one automatically becomes an administrator. An administrator must be elected on the Community Portal or other page. If elected, submit an application to m:SRP with a link to the page. Steward will make user an administrator.
In addition, global sysop and steward handle simple tasks when the administrator is not available. Syunsyunminmin (talk) 14:54, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • Since the deletion of the page will cause Wp/lar to have no content, I'll change its main status at Wp/lar to status=tocreate
Iohanen (Garcez) (talk) 20:45, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello! All these changes are unproblematic and, in my opinion, routine actions that don't need to be notified here. I also think if you do anything you proposed to do in your Request for Adminship, it's not necessary to report it here. On the other hand, if you want to report things you did here, feel free to continue to do so. It can be very useful to reflect on what you do as an administrator and can also be a good opportunity for feedback from other users. Just don't feel pressured to report every thing here, the line in the administrators' policy was really introduced "to prevent mass-scale mistakes that need to be reverted manually afterward", like deleting hundreds of pages at once. --MF-W {a, b} 08:23, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see, thank you for your instructions! I'll then notify actions here that I may think may be doubtful and, of course, mass-scale actions that could lead to mistakes. Thank you again!

@QuickQuest: Hello! I hope you're having a good day. It seems to me that the Vai Wikipedia main page was being vandalised some days ago, so it was protected. To achieve this goal, we have introduced the "Accessibility for Reading" beta feature. It adds a menu which works on the Vector 2022 skin and allows logged-in users to choose different font sizes based on individual needs. This makes it easier to serve the accessibility needs for more people. For more information, check out our project page.

The menu introduces a new Standard font setting. It slightly increases the size and height of the font. It was selected by looking at the preferences of editors using the beta feature, general recommendations for accessibility (which font is quickest to read for the majority of people), as well as the suggestions and designs of more than 600 Wikimedians. You will find more information on this setting below. This menu has been available on Wikipedias since June 2024.

We are now ready to make the new Appearance menu available for logged-out and logged-in users on all wikis, including this one. At the same time, we will also make the Standard option the new default for logged-out users only. If no breaking technical issues are found, we plan on making this change in the week of September 9.

About the menu
The new menu will allow logged-in and logged-out users to set preferences for:
  1. Text size and line height (available now as the beta feature): Users will be able to choose between the Small (current default), Standard (recommended for better accessibility), and Large options. Selecting an option will change both the font size and line height of the text.
  2.
Content width (previously available as a toggle button): We have moved the content width toggle from an icon at the bottom of the page to a labeled radio button in the new menu. It will work exactly the same as the toggle. The previous toggle button will no longer be available.
  3. Dark mode (coming soon!): Users will be able to choose to see the site in night mode on a permanent basis, or select an “automatic” setting which will set day or night mode based on the device or browser preferences. Dark mode is already available in the menu as a beta feature - check it out by opting into the “Accessibility fo Reading”

This menu has been tested as a beta feature by logged-in users across wikis as well as in user testing with readers. The menu has also been the default on all Wikipedias since June 2024. Based on the findings of these tests, we changed the menu to improve the user experience, menu discoverability and ease of use, and to accommodate gadget compatibility across wikis.

The menu will appear to the right of the page, immediately under the Tools menu. Similar to the Tools menu, the menu will appear as open by default, but can be pinned. Once pinned, the menu collapses under an icon at the top of the page.

About the new Standard font setting

The "Small" option is the current default. We will be changing this default to "Standard" for logged-out users, while keeping "Small" as the default for logged-in users. The "Standard" and "Large" options were built and tested based on the following:

  • Academic studies and recommendations for the best average font size for the majority of readers. These recommendations stated that our current size is too small for the majority of people to read comfortably. This means that on average, people read more slowly, strain their eyes while reading, or have difficulty clearly seeing the text. Increasing the font size by default improves these issues for all users, including users who might not have sufficient time to spend adjusting a setting via the appearance menu or browser. We also highlighted that information density is important to the Wikipedia experience, making the goal of the typography changes to increase font size without sacrificing information density. This was done by altering not only font size, but also line height and paragraph spacing.
  • Designs submitted by more than 630 Wikimedians from across 13 wikis of different languages, scripts, and sizes. The majority (~450) of test users opted for a font size that was larger than the default, with the most popular cluster being 15-20 pixels. "Standard" represents the average of the most popular cluster of community responses (15-20) pixels. "Large"represents the need for an even larger option, as represented by the cluster of sizes between 21-26 pixels. You can read more on how we included volunteers in the process and landed on these options.
  • Beta feature usage showed that the majority of users who interact with the feature at least once opt for a font size that is larger than the current default.

Our works so far and next steps

Logged-in users will remain with the “small” setting for the time being as their default, but can change to any other setting at any time. In a few months, we will study how many logged-in users switch to standard and start a conversation on whether it makes sense for logged-in users to make the switch as well. From the early data from the beta feature, 55% of sessions who interacted with the feature chose to use a setting that was standard or larger.

If you'd like to help, we have a few simple requests for you:

  1. Please, turn on the beta feature ("Accessibility for Reading (Vector 2022)")
  2. Try out the new menu. Is anything confusing? Do you understand all the labels and how the menu works?
  3. Try out the small, standard, and large sizes. Reach out to us if you notice any bugs, or have questions or concerns.
  4. Try out the width toggle. Reach out to us if you notice any bugs, or have questions or concerns.

If you'd like to learn more about the project, see our FAQ. Comments and questions are most welcome. Thank you! SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 19:20, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
