Wikipedia Yola

Not allowing a test wiki of Wikipedia Yola is unfair, there is a revival movement going on in Wexford. I’m a fluent heritage speaker, Why is it blocked? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by MichaelDMelvin23 (discussioncontribs) 08:57, 8 January 2022 (UTC).[reply]

Hi, You may not recall for it was long ago that you removed my little wiki, and moved on with your day, but I did not. You said the language is dead, but that isn’t fully true. Yes it is true that there are no speakers who have spoken it since they were born, but there is a small amount of people such as myself who are fully capable people when it comes to speaking Yola, and that have helped it to be spoken in this time, and by more people now too! As you can see I’m writing in it right now. The others will write page for it too. I’m a so called heritage speaker as well, Yola was spoken by my ancestors. We of the yola language hope this pleased you well, and hope that you will let us open a “Test Wiki” and make it so that our children, and their children, and so on, will have a website to do research on, in their own language. Thank you for your time -Michael

@MichaelDMelvin23 Based on your suggestions, Wikisource (to which we don't "incubate" here) is more suitable for your purpose, instead of Wikipedia. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 01:44, 16 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Liuxinyu970226 @MF-Warburg Yola is a revived language and the community deserves a Wikipedia for researching in their own language. The ISO 639-3 code is valid, but was rendered unusable by MF-Warburg. MichaelDMelvin23 (talk) 13:57, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia in Yola (2)

Currently still receiving the message “You are trying to create a page without a valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 code” despite that “yol” is a valid ISO code, can anyone explain why this happened? It was working until someone shut down the Incubator Wiki, saying that the language was extinct despite the fact that it is a revived language. Middle English, Old Prussian, Old English, etc all have Incubator tests, so what is the reason why a legitimate, revived language can not have an Incubator test? Thank you for reading, any advice, comments, or feedback would be greatly appreciated as I don’t know where to go from here. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by MichaelDMelvin23 (discussioncontribs) 15:11, 25 January 2022 (UTC).[reply]

That's a false positive. Ping User:Danny B. for checking what can be done. --MF-W {a, b} 13:27, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As MF-Warburg mentioned above, this was unfortunate false positive. Apologies for inconvenience and thanks for patience. The collected data have been reflected in the updated version and you should not experience any issues now. However, since your language has a specific way of word formation, some other false positive still unfortunately may happen in the future, nevertheless such possible occurrences will be reflected as well as soon as possible.
PS: Please, if possible, in your own interest set and verify your e-mail address in preferences, thank you.

I see, this is a new code, that's why it's not yet in the Glottolog database. Since this is about a constructed language however (and one that used to have a Wikipedia; the ISO change request also mentions wikipesija.org which is linked from the "fandom" page and still seems to be active), it should first be clarified with Langcom if it is accepted as eligible. See m:Language committee/Handbook (requesters) if you want to make a request accordingly. --MF-W {a, b} 23:39, 4 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Unable to create an infopage for Wb/ha

I've tried to create an infopage for the Hausa Wikibooks, but I get the "You are trying to create a page without a valid ISO 639-1 or -3 code" error message. I just noticed this had been created, apparently last year. I can edit that page, but trying to edit the redlinked page gets me an error. Arlo Barnes (talk) 07:05, 27 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This is because we have now restricted the creation of pages in languages which are not recognized as individual, living languages, so that their eligibility can be clarified first. Please make a request on Meta (linked from Wp/ldn). --MF-W {a, b} 16:13, 27 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm confused, isn't that for 'graduating' from Incubator? meta:language proposal policy says "[...] there is an active test project on the Multilingual Wikisource (Wikisource only), Beta Wikiversity (Wikiversity only), or the Incubator (all other projects). A project must start on one of these wikis. This will demonstrate that there is sufficient community to build the project." so I'm unclear which is the cart and which is the horse here. Arlo Barnes (talk) 22:11, 27 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There are two steps, "eligibility" and "final approval". The latter is about leaving Incubator and getting an own wiki, but the former is about the language itself. See there for some notes about artificial languages already. --MF-W {a, b} 14:25, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks; I've created the page with the template. Arlo Barnes (talk) 22:03, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cannot create new page for Wp/tvx

Whenever I try to create a new page for Wp/tvx, it's rejected with an error message:

wp/yol

Hi, can anyone let me know why I’m blocked from creating wp/yol. https://iso639-3.sil.org/code/yol This links to the ISO 639-3 code which has been valid since 2009. I had been previously able to edit the pages but it’s been blocked for months now, and I’ve received minimal information on why. I was told its because it is extinct, but seeing as thats not an accurate descriptor of the current situation I dont see why a test project on the incubator can’t be allowed. For example, Old Prussian, a language that is in the same situation as Yola, being a previously extinct language with a dedicated revival has a test project on incubator. Any comments on why this is, even if they may seem harsh to the revival movement would be appreciated as we simply don’t know why it is not able to be created, I have had other people reach out to me expressing a desire to help with the project as well, so relaying this information to them is important. --MichaelDMelvin23 (talk) 14:25, 27 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am trying to create articles in Yola as well and it doesn't let me. I believe some administrator needs to give us permission to write using that code so I would like to request it as well. The language has an ISO code so I believe there shouldn't be any problem with that. --Caro de Segeda (talk) 14:46, 27 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Extinct languages, as has been pointed out to you before, are not allowed for new Wikipedias (see the language proposal policy). Some test-wikis exist here on Incubator for them, but they are relics from before we could enforce this rule automatically. They will eventually be deleted. --MF-W {a, b} 22:31, 27 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
But the thing is that it is not extinct. It has been revived and there are speakers using this language. Caro de Segeda (talk) 06:19, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The first two ones are supposed to become MediaWiki:Wy/mr/... pages, correct? What functions do they supply that are currently needed? About the gadgets, I don't think prefixes work for them, but they can be available as general Incubator gadgets, I suppose. --MF-W {a, b} 23:43, 19 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@MF-Warburg right, actually while creating I have kept the full page name as it is. but here it will be all different.
 • MediaWiki:Wy/mr/Common.css
 • MediaWiki:Wy/mr/Common.js
So your saying gadgets don't need prefixes? but they will be for all the projects and those who need it can avail?
Now, I am not sure these gadgets will work here or not as there might be other pages/modules needed for them. But till we have these pages I won't know that. QueerEcofeminist (talk) 04:36, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I can see gadgets files for wp/bgn and wp/khw. Obviously, I couldn't check whether its working or not but there are gadgets pages with prefix. QueerEcofeminist (talk) 04:54, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@QueerEcofeminist: As far as I understand, all of these are exact copies of the same pages on the English Wikivoyage, correct? Have you tested them (in your common.js) to check that they work as they should in the Incubator? If not, please do that first. Then, if they work like they should here, we should include them with mw.loader.load directly from the English Wikivoyage in MediaWiki:Wy/mr/Common.js, so that they stay in sync with the originals. A bug with the editor on Incubator (| pipe symbols are being automatically added before links)

I'm experiencing a weird bug that has never happen on a different Wikimedia project. You can see me removing them on an article in this edit, but this keeps happenening on almost every link every time I start editing a page, and during every such edit I have to make sure to remove somehow automatically added pipe symbols from affected links. There are new pipe links being automatically added for every edit made (i.e. Wy/hbs/Brisel becomes [[|Wy/hbs/Brisel]] and breaks the link). Has anyone experienced this bug here, and where should I submit a bug report if I can? -Vipz (talk) 15:55, 21 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Vipz: Are you sure it happened while you were editing, and that it hadn't happened to you (or someone else) on the previous save before you started editing? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:14, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jon Harald Søby: the symbols happen to be added to the source code at the moment of clicking Edit and seeing it, not during the edit or after saving. See me removing a couple of ||| in this edit. I was the only one editing that page at the time. -Vipz (talk) 21:28, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The ones you are removing there were added in these 3 edits by another user (who probably had the gadget enabled at the time), so it's safe to say it's not coming from your end when you have the gadget disabled. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 06:54, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Accidental IP edit

Hi, I accidentally made an IP edit to my talk page while being logged out of my account. I'd rather not have my IP visible, so would it be possible to get it removed and if so, how would I go about doing that? --YoungstownToast (talk) 16:54, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I hid it. For the future, it might be advisable to not post the request itself publicly, but to e-mail an admin. --MF-W {a, b} 20:17, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wy/hbs Latin-Cyrillic converter in the future

There is an ongoing effort to support Latin -> Cyrillic converting for Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia, if and when that is implemented, can it be used on Serbo-Croatian Wikivoyage as well? One of my concerns is that the latter was requested with the ISO-639 -3 code [hbs] instead of the one that our other projects use with ISO-639 -1 [sh], could that be an obstacle? I would have personally preferred keeping everything consistent with the latter code, but I'm not the requester. P.S. sorry if this is not the right place to ask, redirect me if so, thank you. -Vipz (talk) 19:19, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Vipz: Yes, if it is approved, we will import it to shwikivoyage and not hbswikivoyage. There is already enough of a mess with language code redundancy/overlap in MediaWiki/Wikimedia, so we're not gonna create more of that unless it's absolutely necessary.
And using the same converter – when it exists – for Wikipedia and Wikivoyage would be no problem whatsoever. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 06:50, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Users Moshidai and Weather Top Wizard

Hi,

The users User:Moshidai and User:Weather Top Wizard do something similar: create a lot of nearly-identical articles about Japanese articles in various languages.

These articles are useless, and they don't help these languages graduate from the Incubator.

I've already asked User:Moshidai about that, and they kept doing it. User:Weather Top Wizard was not warned about this specific thing before today, but there are requests from other users to stop "helping" them in similar ways.

I recommend that the administrators consider blocking these users and deleting the pages they created. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 08:50, 29 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Try m:SRCU instead? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 03:40, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This reply is really unhelpful and uncalled for. Amir is a very experienced user and if he had wanted to make a request on Meta, he surely would have done so. Unfortunately, it seems to become more and more of a pattern for you to give useless replies on pages which you know are regularly being watched and answered by Incubator admins / Langcom members - but where your "answer" is always just some misleading "go to some random other page instead" or an outlandish statement that something is policy which is not. You should really rethink your participation in these requests. --MF-W {a, b} 22:32, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Striked, I originally guess that they want a checkuser request, my fault. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 01:02, 5 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:Amire80: thanks for pointing these out! I also find them very concerning and we regularly have to block similar accounts. I'm asking User:Sotiale to have a look as well. --MF-W {a, b} 22:32, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Moshidai blocked and pages created by him deleted. Looks like a continuation of Special:Contribs/Bosco1122. --MF-W {a, b} 22:36, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Moshidai perfectly matches users who blocked countless times here. But Weather Top Wizard is slightly different, so they don't seem to be the same user as the previously blocked user. This user should be notified if their behavior is appropriate, and if it persists, they will have no other choice. --Sotiale (talk) 09:16, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Change of code uun to pzh

Pazeh language was put under the ISO 639 uun, but it's now assigned with a new code pzh, and someone has move the page WP/uun to WP/pzh.

But I still got warning saying it's not allowed to to create a new entry with the new code. I would like to know how to fix the problem.--Cosinepi-fly (talk) 11:35, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:Cosinepi-fly: I have changed the corresponding filter, so that it now recognizes pzh as valid instead on uun. By the way, what is your proficiency in the language? --MF-W {a, b} 22:42, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@MF-Warburg: Many thanks for your help! I would say I am around lower-intermediate level in Pazeh. I study the language with written material and the elders. I can produce some simple sentences, but still have to make use of the dictionary to have a better expression.--Cosinepi-fly (talk) 00:01, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thai Wikivoyage Requests Requiring Administrator and IA Rights

Fixing link on MediaWiki:Wy/th/Common.css

JhsBot broke Thai Wikivoyage's css by moving Wy/th/common.css. I'm requesting edit to MediaWiki:Wy/th/Common.css, changing the link from "//incubator.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=wy/th/common.css&action=raw&ctype=text/css" to "//incubator.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=wy/th/Common.css&action=raw&ctype=text/css". I know this is not secure but it is probably the best way to do it for now. --Bebiezaza (talk) 06:51, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I moved the contents to the MediaWiki page and deleted the main space page. That's a sneaky workaround someone introduced there years ago, but we certainly don't want to get css (or js) from a page editable by everyone. --MF-W {a, b} 01:58, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wy/th/Common.js

Wy/th/Common.js's content model should be changed to JavaScript. And please add importScript("Wy/th/Common.js"); to MediaWiki:Wy/th/Common.js, if possible. --Bebiezaza (talk) 06:51, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not possible per above. As the main space "js" page was now empty, I deleted it. --MF-W {a, b} 01:59, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Change the content model

Unable to create a page

I wasn’t able to create a page named “Îagûara” under Old Tupian Wikipedia (its ISO 639-3 is tpw). This is what I wrote: Îagûara (nda îagûareté ruã) so'o i kamyba'e. A'e so'ogûara. Sekobé pukuî, 10–20 ro'y kûabi. "Îagûara abá raûsuparetéramo oîkó", e'i amõ abá. . I’m quite sure it’s grammatically correct. RodRabelo7 (talk) 19:31, 19 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Old Tupí(tpw) is an extinct language. Therefore, it is not eligible as a language for test projects under current policy. That is why your page has not been created. --Sotiale (talk) 09:54, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

An administrator keep undeleting test pages

Hello, I have notice that an admin, User:Jon Harald Søby, keep undeleting a test page which deleted by 2 different admins. And even creating a category for the test page after the test page being deleted twice. I found that it is quite disruptive as there are already a test wiki for admins to test. I hope someone can aware this issue. 49.197.238.30 01:16, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Who is it actually disrupting…? It is clearly a test page (its name is "Test"), it uses a private use language code (so no real language will ever use that code), and it is temporary – I will delete it once the testing is done. I was not fully aware of that test project though (that is, I stumbled across it once, but then forgot its language code) – had I been, I would have used it instead. I will move my test pages over there. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:09, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I am unable to create a page

Hello. When I try to create a main page for a test Wikinews it says that the language doesn't have a valid ISO 639-1 or a valid ISO 639-3 code. However, the language has both. I've tried making the page use Lat and La, and yet neither seems to work. The page is here. Thanks! Helloheart (talk) 04:23, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Helloheart: Hi. As you saw on Wn/la before you yourself edited it, the Latin Wikinews has been rejected by the language committee. That's the reason it is not listed as a valid language, so that people won't waste their efforts on a project that will not get approved. I will now revert your edits to Wn/la.
