Hello, I was going to ask you something. What do you mean hello in Selkup?
--Q Maxi p (talk) 20:59, 27 December 2019 (UTC)

Geographic names in Selkup language
editGrigoriy Korotkih I will continue the discussion on your talk page, since you replied to me. An identical thing happened some time ago on the Khakas Wikipedia, when a contributor decided it was a great idea to make the names of the countries more similar to their original names, so Hungary became "Магйарорсааг", Germany became "Йарманхан", Austria became "Ӧстарайх" and so on. The explanation of this contributor was that they intend to propose spelling changes in the Khakas language, and to cite as an example their work on the Khakas test-Wikipedia. I explained to them that the work on any wikipedia must be based on the existing and verified spelling rules, which are approved by the competent linguistic institutions for their language, because if the established language rules are not followed, every participant in the future could work according to his own discretion. This means that if the names of those countries, cities, rivers and so on are not common and used in the dictionaries of twenty, thirty or fifty years ago since there was literacy in a given language, they should not be changed at their own discretion in the present. I have not noticed the rules of adaptation of geographical names that you are talking about in any wikipedia in the languages of the peoples of Russia, except for a few exceptions between territorially neighboring peoples who have their own names for neighboring nations, different from Russian names. I understand that you want to de-Russify the Selkup language, but it seems to me that your way is very arbitrary and may cause problems for some future participants of the project. For example, the Volga River has a dozen names in the different languages spoken in its basin, and the similarities between the Mari and Selkup languages are so minimal that one can hardly speak of any similarity, except for a common Uralic origin. According to that logic, you could also take the Erzian or Udmurt name for the Volga, considering that they are similar to Selkup as much as the Mari language. The same story is with Nizhny Novgorod, since Obran Osh is a historical and anachronistic name that even Erzians no longer use for that city. Following your logic of adaptation, the name from the Mari language could also be taken - Ugarman. Regarding the Selkup names of Sweden, Alaska, Belarus, Australia, St. Petersburg, I'm just curious if those de-Russified names also appear in Selkup dictionaries from a few decades ago, or is this a recent practice? I personally worked on the Mansi wikipedia, and read online newspapers in this language, and noticed that the geographical names for countries and distant cities are identical to Russian names, as in most Finno-Ugric wikipedias. The Mansi language has its own names for neighboring peoples such as Khanty, Nenets, Tatars, Komi, but there are no special and specific names for states, cities and peoples with which this people did not have historical contacts and connections. The Mansi people have their own names for rivers such as the Ob, the Irtysh, or the Ural Mountains, because it is their native territory, but the names for rivers that are far from them are identical to the Russian language, because all Mansi, as well as the Selkups, are bilingual. Selkups live in central-west Siberia, which is thousands of kilometers away from Sweden and Alaska, why do you think that the names for these territories must be different than their names in Mansi, Khakas, Karelian or Tatar languages? Don't misunderstand my criticism, your work on Selkup Wikipedia is excellent and to be commended, considering how few people are interested in endangered languages in Russia. I'm just afraid that you may have problems in the future with the eventual approval of wikipedia, because I don't think the Incubator is a place to experiment with language, especially not with an endangered minority language like Selkup language. To me personally, those geographic names look unusual, if you take into account the language rules and customs on other wikipedias in Finno-Ugric languages. I am not a linguist, nor an expert in the Selkup language, it is up to you to decide how you will work on this wikipedia, I cannot influence that, I just want to point out some flaws to you, so that your work is not in vain.--PatrickDubois125 (talk) 19:55, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
Hello
edithello. Can I help you with working on the Selkup or Mansi Wikipedia. I don't know these languages but I can create templates and modules. Пан Хаунд (talk) 13:13, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hello! Till now I only have some expirience of making municipal districts templates: 1, 2.
- We seemingly need to configure the reference template, because now it doesn't work correctly.
- I'm also thinking to start Selkup Wiktionary in Incubator and here I'd obviously need help with templates because 1) the Wiktionary article composition itself is based on templates 2) there are declension and conjugation templates 3) Wiktionary articles can be created somehow automatically.
- Briefly, I'm not a coder and I don't know much about templates and modules, but I'll be glad to cooperate. :)
- Grigoriy Korotkih (talk) 15:16, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Пан Хаунд if your proposition remains actual I would also ask you to help us to make an authomatical upload of the articles from Russian Wikipedia into Selkup Incubator about all geographical objects and administrative units of Tomsk region. We can prepare some models of the articles about rivers, actual and abandonned villages, municipal administrations etc, I will give Selkup geographical names (if there are any) and translate the text of the module. (Or how we can name it.) So we will have like some hundreds of new articles.
- Grigoriy Korotkih (talk) 10:04, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hello. The proposition is still actual. I can help you with making templates or modules but I can't make an authomatical upload of articles from one wiki to another (I don't know how to do it). And, if it's not a problem, I'm not working with ruwiki because of war in my country. But I can use english wiki or polish wiki. Пан Хаунд (talk) 10:39, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
- Okay. So what kind of templates and modules can you make? I saw you made some in Selkup incubator but I have no idea what it's for, sorry, I'm dumb in coding. Grigoriy Korotkih (talk) 10:45, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
- So do i. I make duplicate s of templates from one wikis and adapt it to another wikis.)) But I can make it. Пан Хаунд (talk) 11:02, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
- i can make such templates: Template:Wp/sel/Infobox (done)
- Template:Wp/sel/documentation (in progress).
- And others.

- @Grigoriy Korotkih + to have the wiki created you have to create a community of 3+ people who awill work on the test wiki every month and make 35-40+ articles every month. 2. Also you have to create s request for creating your wiki on meta:Requests for new languages. If all the requirements for wiki are done, meta: Language committee will verify it as eligible. And after 7-8 months of active work on wiki, meta: Language committee will take a look at your wiki and may create it. Пан Хаунд (talk) 15:27, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

- Thank you so much. Would you be able to translate the rest, please?

- I'll be also glad if you translate a short description of my language into Glosa and also post it to the Glosa wiki wherever it's hosted:
- Southern Selkup language is the language of the indigenous population of the Middle Ob basin. It's spoken in Tomsk region, Western Siberia. Genetically it's of the Uralic family, Samoyedic group and Southern Samoyedic subgroup. It's polycentric: there are 5 dialectal groups (one of them went extinct poorly fixed) and 3 slightly different Cyrillic written systems for different dialects. Southern Selkup language has faced language shift but now the middle age of speakers gets lower because of the language activism. Still <10 people can speak it fully, but around 50 people can read, translate and produce written texts.
- I hope it's not too long or complicated. I'd be also happy to get acquainted with the Glosa wiki! Grigoriy Korotkih (talk) 23:10, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
- I'm also open to other translations. Grigoriy Korotkih (talk) 23:11, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
Hi! Thank you so much for your translation. I created an article here and I added your translation here. The article you asked me to do is on the Glosa Wiki. The language doesn't have an ISO code so I cannot create a wiki here. I wanted to ask you how do you say "Southern Selkup" in Southern Selkup because I found these glottonyms but I believe they are just for Selkup (чу́мэл шэ, тюйкуй келл, шё̄шӄуй шэ̄, сӱ̄ссыӷӯй сэ̄, шöйӄумый эты). - I'm making the article for Russia, then I'll write about Kargasok. Btw the only article about a rural administration is Kargasok one. The system is region (oblast) - district (raion) - rural/town administration. Grigoriy Korotkih (talk) 14:05, 11 February 2024 (UTC)

- Hi, I wanted to ask you whether the Bible has been translated to Selkup. Jon Gua (talk) 16:43, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
- No, for sure. Grigoriy Korotkih (talk) 16:50, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
- Are there any excerpts of the Bible in Selkup? Jon Gua (talk) 16:53, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
- I've just found a short quotation in Taz Northern and also there is psalm 22 in Middle Ket Southern. Both of them are far from Narym Southern which is used here. Northern is a completely separate language. Grigoriy Korotkih (talk) 17:02, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for the link. Is there any literature written in Selkup? Jon Gua (talk) 17:04, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
- Not much, but
- Южноселькупский справочник — Selkup.fu-lab.ru (the headline "Книги" -- "Books") Grigoriy Korotkih (talk) 17:09, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, would you be able to create an article about this person? Jon Gua (talk) 17:12, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
- Probably not today, but that's doable, I'll make it. Btw, can you create templates for municipal districts, local administrations, settlements and rivers as well as you did for states and Russian regions? That would be really useful. Grigoriy Korotkih (talk) 17:20, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
