Levantine Arabic (North) Wikipedia edit

Hello/Salam! I have seen that there was already such a project that failed due to inclusion of both North Levantine (ISO 693 = apc) Arabic and South Levantine Arabic.

As we should know, Arabic (like Chinese) is a macro-language, and not all it's members are mutually intelligible. A Lebanese will have difficulty understanding an Iraqi or a Moroccan. Arabic varieties can be grouped into more than six major groups, like Maghrebi Arabic, Egyptian Arabic, Sudanese Arabic, Levantine Arabic, Peninsular Arabic, and Iraqi Arabic. Half or the majority of Arabic-speakers can't speak MSA. So I think it makes sense to have Wikipedia versions in the major dialect of Arabic (we already have an Egyptian Arabic Wikipedia). See this for an example of the regional difference.

Also, something I would like to know: are North Levantine and South Levantine that different to be considered different languages on here? The previous project was rejected because it wanted to combine the two. Lebanese and Palestinian are mutually intelligible to a high degree. Why can't they be combined?

We are currently hosting our test wiki on labs http://drmf.wmflabs.org/wiki/Main_Page this is not optimal, since labs is probably not the best place to curate content. Now, we are going to switch to a model which store large portion of the data in a wikibase instance. Thus it becomes more and more important to have a reliable infrastructure. A Quran Dictionary in all languages edit

The intended wiki is a searchable and browsable Quran dictionary of all terms in all languages. The Quran is a widely distributed book sacred to Muslims and of interest to non-Muslims all over the world.

As a start over the past year, I have developed a database of all Quran terms in the Arabic language. The number of terms is almost 50,000. Each term points to the specific verse(s) where it has appeared. The text of the verse is available, in addition to the chapter's name and the verse number. The Arabic language roots of those terms have also been added to the table to enhance the quality of the search. Then I started with the English language. I have added the English language translation of each verse in each chapter. Then translated all the Arabic terms to the English language. So, Each record in the database now contains: 1. Arabic term 2. Arabic root 3. Arabic verse text 4. Chapter name 5. Verse number 6. English term 7. English verse text

The final searchable and browsable wiki will contain: 1. The term in all languages 2. The associated verse text in Arabic 3. The associated verse text in all languages

This wiki should be of interest to a wide audience. For example, anyone interested in Islamic culture and the Islamic faith or anyone interested in the Arabic language. Whether they are Islamic, Arab or belong to any another tradition, culture or language, they can all contribute to the wiki and/or research the rich content for a wide variety of academic disciplines.

I would argue that Talossan is quite recognized. It exists since 1980, has its own Wikipedia article on multiple Wikipedia editions, has more than 28,000 words, has its own official language regulator (Comità per l'Útzil del Glheþ (CÚG)), is supported by some major internationalization platforms (Crowdin, Transifex and Launchpad) and there is even a translation of The Hobbit in the making. The members of la comità are real people who inhabit real places in the world. The names listed here are the Talossan names of real, existing people. A month ago I was nominated as a candidate member (membreux candidäts) for the CÚG, however I am not yet listed on the aforementioned page.   Go ahead. @Robin0van0der0vliet, MF-Warburg: For the sake of trying to close things that have been hanging open for a while: There is no reason in principle for you not to run this test project, so go ahead.
(Do look at Wp/tzl/Páxhina dal Casa, which is the only page that exists there now. If it's really Talossan, go ahead and expand it. If not, please blank it out until you are ready to put something there.)

@Kuaranta, Ochilov, Hydriz: There are two ways to do this:
  • The long, hard road: You can try to get SIL to create a language code. Information is available here. If there is an application open at SIL, then the Wikimedia Language Committee will entertain a request for new language (RFL), and it can stay open as long as the application at SIL is still pending. Then, once there is an RFL in place, you can open a test project here on Incubator. But ... if SIL rejects the request for new code, then the Langcom will reject the RFL, and then you will have to move the test off Incubator.
  • What we recommend: Just start this project immediately at Incubator Plus, where you can do what you want.
To be candid, one reason we are recommending this to you is that it feels very unlikely that SIL will approve a code for Chiac when there is not currently even a code for Acadian French. Request for Mesopotamian Wikipedia edit

Mesopotamian language is spoken by nearly 38 million Iraqis, with 4 million Khuzestanis in southern Iran.

It's an independent semitic language and has a ISO 639-3 acm code. It uses Arabic Alphabet though it has lost the _ض_ consonant due to voice changes, but gained, along with those found in Arabic, all of گ,چ,ژ,پ. Mesopotamian language has its own lexicon and Grammar differs from that in Modern Standard Arabic. I request for Mesopotamian Wikipedia.   Done Go to Wp/acm. Whether or not this project would be approved by the Language Committee will depend to a great extent on whether or not this and standard Arabic are mutually intelligible. Have a look at Wp/oka/qipcm:
  • Per practice in other Wikipedias, you'll want to bold the subject in the first sentence, as I did here.
  • Is there a reason you didn't want to name the page Wp/oka/qipcm̓?
  • I realize that it's early times, but do get in the habit of adding reliable sources to articles. All the usual Wikipedia rules apply to Wikipedia tests at Incubator (reliable sources, NPOV, BLP, etc.), though I appreciate that it takes a while to get into a rhythm on such things. Reliable sources can be in any language, and in your case they will probably almost never be in Colville-Okanagan, so don't be concerned about that.
By the way, don't be too hard on the Canadians. Wikimedia Canada is really good at helping get aboriginal language projects up to speed and then on to approval. They recently got Atikamekw Wikipedia approved and are now working on Innu-aimun Wikipedia test here on Incubator. If you want some help from there let me know. @StevenJ81: Thanks for all the feedback, I'm not a regular here and it will take me awhile to figure all this out! The qipcm/qipcm̓ split was unintentional, orthographically there is still wiggle room about how we represent final closed consonants in n̓səlxcin̓ and so various source materials don't agree. I guess I'll have to make a call one way or another. Thanks for the reminder about sources, and some of what I added has POV so I'll edit those passages out. I get that. If there is still wiggle room, then you should create a page (which could, and maybe should, be in English along with Colville-Okanagan), and set some policies. Those policies can be challenged, and in fact you'd even probably want to say somewhere on this page, that spelling conventions are still in the process of regularizing, and that discussion is welcome on the talk page. You'll want to call the page Wp/oka/Wikipedia:Spelling conventions (or Wp/oka/Help:Spelling conventions, or substitute an Okanagan name for "Wikipedia" or "Help"). Hello, @Gminky. I appreciate that there are differences that have appeared (e.g., as in en:North–South differences in the Korean language). Nevertheless, our policy is that you cannot start a test here unless the language is assumed to be sufficiently different from any other language here that it has its own ISO 639-3 language code. Request to start a middle english wikipedia in the incubator edit

I know it might never become a subdomain, but I'm interested in doing a bit with it. The ISO code is "enm" and "main page" might be translated "front(e) page"(literally "front page") or perhaps "first(e) page"("first"/"most important" page) or "entri page"("entry page"), depending on what exactly you want from the translation. Already exists. Look at Wp/enm, whose main page is Wp/enm/Mayne Page. Please keep in mind that because the test already exists, there may be standards in place already. The test has not been active in a couple of years, but if you want to make a changes in policies or standards please bring them up at Talk:Wp/enm/Mayne Page before changing them unilaterally.

Not the IP's position to make this call. But in this case I will validate that call. The Language proposal policy generally requires one language per project. Multilingualism has ISO 639-3 code mul. Without even a simple test, how to even convince at Meta? My plan could even accommodate any languages without their own sites. Concerning semi-protection: Good point, and I'll do that.
You are correct that the code is legitimate, so I'll go ahead and allow the test. Start it at Wq/mul. But I'd be a little cautious on a couple of grounds. In particular:
  • Understand that LangCom isn't fond of multilingual projects, aside from oldwikisource. So I wouldn't kill myself making a test that by itself would be big enough to approve. Instead, create something that is big enough to display your idea comfortably, but not a lot bigger, so that you haven't "wasted" time working on this. Remember that just because a test is permitted here—where the rules for tests are less strict—does not mean that LangCom will be willing to approve it in the end.
  • We don't (yet?) have Wikidata access here. So if you would depend on that, you can't depend on that.
  • You can also consider creating the test at Incubator Plus on Wikia. There are even fewer rules there, and we can still get LangCom to look at the experiment when you are ready.

@XxxxRager: I'm really not quite sure what you're asking to do. Wikimedia's Marathi projects use the ISO 639-1 code mr, rather than the ISO 639-3 code mar. Every project we do here has either an existing project in Marathi or an existing test project in Marathi. You can contribute to any of them now:

Wikivoyage in a language that exists within a SIL macrolanguage edit

This is a language that is located within the SIL macrolanguage ara. Egyptian Arabic has 58 million speakers, is a very common language within Egypt and many expect to contribute. There should be a project like this since there’s already an active Wikipedia in this language. This language is rated 3 (Wider communication) in Ethnologue.

And as far as it goes you're editing in the face of an indefinite block due to vandalism. I let you stay because most of what you do these days is useful enough. But adding info pages about new projects when a community has not come together to create a project is just not useful, and it's not wanted. And if you want to start projects by using machine translation to create a home page, that's not wanted either. Consider yourself warned: do so and I will stop being patient with you. @Awangba Mangang: I have first of all consolidated your requests here into a single request. But please make sure that I understand what you want to do. If I am understanding you correctly, you want to start projects (Wikipedia and others) in the Meitei language, and using the Meitei script. Is that correct? @Awangba Mangang: Generally, there is no reason you can't do this. Our projects are coded by language code, not script code. So you would start creating Wikipedia content at Wp/mni, Wiktionary content at Wt/mni, and so forth. (I would really recommend starting with only one project, and certainly no more than two.) Meitei is a legitimate language, so you can start a test.
Now, there are a couple of things that I need to make sure you understand.
  • If you are going to use Meetei Mayek, and if you have a font loaded on your computer, you will probably be able to read your content. However, you would need to make sure there is an existing font here that supports that Unicode range if you want anyone else to be able to read it. If there isn't one currently available, we can request to have one uploaded. However, the rules here are pretty strict as to what fonts are allowable and what fonts are not. See m:Fonts and mw:Extension:UniversalLanguageSelector#Adding fonts.
  • Our projects are defined by their language, not by their script. By our rules, you can certainly write here in Meetei Mayek. But others can write in Bengali script (or even Latin script, perhaps), if they prefer. The Wikimedia Foundation's goal is to make information accessible to everyone. If having a project available in multiple scripts makes information accessible to more people, then that's a good thing for us. Many projects use multiple scripts successfully; see m:Wikipedias in multiple writing systems for more details.
  • There are general rules for creating test projects here. See Help:Manual.

  • Proposed Wikimedia project: I would like to help preserve the Miwok languages especially Central Sierra Miwok, a hard to navigate limited dictionary already exists online but I believe adding Central Sierra Miwok would be greatly beneficial to the Wikimedia Community as it is a critically endangered language, I plan on contacting the various tribes and obtaining audio recordings if I can and also researching at the University of California for their recordings and seeking out native speakers, possibly this would be the beginning of a Wikipedia project and perhaps we will reach out to duolingo, I would love to work on children's/beginner's books too but first and foremost I would like to start a wiktionary so everyone interested in the revival of Miwok has the opportunity to connect with it on the best free dictionary available and hopefully many people will help. I know that Lo Ximiendo already created a babelbox for CSM and hopefully as I learn more I can begin to translate it a bit.   1. Go to https://translatewiki.net. Note that it is not part of the Wikimedia wiki farm, so SUL does not apply there, even though the surface appearance of the wiki is very similar.
  2. On the main page, it will offer you a chance to create an account. I recommend using the same username as you use on Wikimedia projects. You may want to use a different password, however, for security.
  3. Once you have done that, create a user page. At minimum, put a {{#babel:...}} template on that page. Administrators will look to that in order to grant Translator permission there.
  4. Then go to the page Support there. Request that your language (code csm) be activated, and that you be made a translator. I am pinging @Amire80 to let him know that you are coming. He should be able to help you there, and perhaps help you also create Portal:csm there.
