ASL Wikipedia

edit

I see you have been working on the ASL Wikipedia. I am wondering how this could be used with the ASL Wiktionary. I understand video sign language, but I do not have a good command of Sutton SignWriting. There doesn't seem to be a way to copy-paste a SignWriting word so that I could lookup its translation. Do you have any ideas, or do you know anyone else who can help me with this?

hi, this project ASL WIKI is inactive?? --SurdusVII [SMS] 14:42, 9 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
@SurdusVII, I don't know if I'd call it "inactive". It certainly hasn't been edited in a while, but I think that's largely because we don't have an easily available input method built into the wiki right now. I'm working on fixing this, but currently users have to copy-paste ASL text from a separate program in order to add content to the wiki. --Yair rand (talk) 14:49, 9 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
understand.. but it would be better to have them on video rather than in Signwriting?? --SurdusVII [SMS] 15:00, 9 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
@SurdusVII: No, I don't think so. Video is not really either editable by multiple people, nor "readable" in the manner that makes Wikipedia particularly useful for skimming through and looking more at particular areas. You can't improve someone else's phrasing of something, or explanation of a small area of a topic, or correct simple mistakes, if the content is just video. Text allows links, sections, easily-consumed large portions of data, infoboxes, clean references, and so on, which are impossible with video. Everything that makes a wiki a wiki, isn't something that can be done with video. Certainly, like the there may be associated video files similar to the w:Wikipedia:Spoken articles in spoken languages, but those would be secondary to the actual collaboratively-built text. --Yair rand (talk) 17:03, 9 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Did you find out anything about linking ASL Wikipedia with the ASL Wiktionary? There doesn't seem to be any activity on the ASL Wiktionary. Positivesigner (talk) 15:30, 13 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

MediaWiki:Wp/scl/Common.js

edit
You are right sir, shina is spoken language. I want to create Pakistan Sign Language MediaWiki:Wp/psl/Commons.js--Raki 09:11, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Rachitrali: Ah, I see. So, the ISO 639-3 code for Pakistani Sign Language is actually pks, not psl, so the correct page would be MediaWiki:Wp/pks/Commons.js. Also, you probably want to omit the two lines about SWKB.config since that breaks the script if it's applied to languages that don't have their fingerspelling alphabets in the script language data. Also, unless you're planning to fork the script, you probably want the line importScript( "User:Yair rand/SWKB.js" );, instead of pointing to the non-existent page in your userspace. Are you fluent in Pakistani Sign Language? --Yair rand (talk) 09:17, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Yair rand: thanks for pointing out the errors, I am not fluent in Pakistani sign language, thanks --Raki 13:04, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

I see you've been fairly active here without trouble, and I know you have good confidence with technical tools. Perhaps you should ask MF-Warburg and SPQRobin whether they'd like you to offer your services as NWI. Nemo bis (talk) 18:14, 17 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Question about xml dumps

I checked out the most recent xml dump of the incubator from February 20, 2022. Do you know why the dump including all edit history was skipped? Thanks in advance, -🇺🇦GIFNK🇺🇦DLM🇺🇦MMXX🇺🇦SLAVA🇺🇦UKRAINI🇺🇦(TALK)🇺🇦 19:13, 28 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Gifnk dlm 2020: I'm not the best person to ask about this, sorry. I don't know much about the dumps. (Incidentally: Putting advocacy-style content in your signature is not exactly appropriate.) --Yair rand (talk) 21:33, 28 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
