Hello! I saw Chinese wikipedia is unique from other wikis, for having more than 5 language versions of its own just under the domain of "zh-wiki", excluding Classical Chinese. I want to know how these are managed inside the zh-wiki! Because for mni-wiki too, I just want to add some other variations too, just like Taiwanese, Simplified Mandarin, etc. for zh-wiki! Can it be possible in "mni-wiki" too? Haoreima (talk) 09:35, 20 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

User:Haoreima, the multi-language-variant handling is done using LanguageConverter (LC). What it basically does is you give it a table of strings to replace and it goes from the longest match to the shortest using PHP’s strtr system. For each language there is one such table that converts from all other variants to the target variants. Generally, you prepare a table for all variants using LC’s facilities, and then LC makes the per-variant table on its own.

The usage and some setup of this system is described at https://mediawiki.org/wiki/Writing_systems. I recommend going to the phabrricator to open a ticket for preparing a basic, general-purpose table that goes into the LC extension directly. Artoria2e5 (talk) 10:06, 20 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

IMHO The problem is that which variants Haoreima want to have, per en.wikipedia, Meitei language can be written by:
  1. Meitei (aka Meetei Mayek, mni-Mtei, and looks like what mni.wikipedia is currently using)
  2. Bengali (mni-Beng)
  3. Latin (or Roman as many Indian people rather like to say "Roman" instead of "Latin", mni-Latn) Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 02:13, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Liuxinyu970226: We want Meitei script. Haoreima (talk) 02:14, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima If only Meitei, then what's necessary of having language conversion? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 03:19, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Liuxinyu970226: Chinese wikipedia also uses the same script but different dialects. Same thing, we like to present different dialects for Meitei, like Chinese. :) Haoreima (talk) 03:21, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Liuxinyu970226: May I know why you asked me? How can you help me for this? Since I am not handy, I really need help from senior editors! :) Haoreima (talk) 03:35, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima For different dialects, I'm afraid that LC isn't a possible opinion, as grammars used can be highly different, that may not handlable by LC, zhwiki isn't having several dialects (they are absolutely in Mandarin (cmn)), but has several word variets according to area they are living, the reason why Cantonese, Gan and Wuu Wikipedias exist is likely due to this. My suggestion is to learn how Goan Konkani Wikipedia is doing: gom:Template:VD, gom:Template:VK and gom:Template:VR. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:04, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Liuxinyu970226: So, like Konkani, are these possible by just creating some templates inside the mni wikipedia? I mean as suggested by @Artoria2e5:, shall I need no effort to go outside mni wikipedia for doing these? Haoreima (talk) 04:08, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
