Birak (roughly December and January) is one of the six Noongar seasons. Birak is known to Noongar as first Summer, the 'hot and dry' season.[1] Noongar would be down by the coast now.
During this time, sections of bush were burned off using firestick farming, an age old practise which helped rejuvenate landscapes and reduce the fuel load to prevent catastrophic bush fires. The fire would also drive out animals for Noongar to hunt and use for food and create objects for other purposes, like making Booka from Yonga. Working boodjar in sections meant the animals always had vegetation available for food and shelter and the fires would be localised and controlled.[2][3][4][5]
