Wp/mhr. A.M.D.F. 16:48, 20 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

– Artomo 16:51, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

A.M.D.F. 17:01, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

– Artomo 17:27, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
A.M.D.F. 19:50, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

A.M.D.F. 13:23, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

- Artomo 13:30, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Курув edit

Could you please write a stub http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/mhr/Курув - just a few sentences based on http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Курув ? Only 3-5 sentences enough. Please.

PS. Article about Kurów is already on 284 languages. If your village/town/city isn't yet on PL wiki, I can do article about it. (I'm first author of requests) Pietras1988 TALK 20:32, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I wrote a really stub about Kurow. My mother tongue is not Mari but I know something about the language. I hope there is no big mistakes. Now you can illustrade it, or how? – Artomo 10:42, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your nice article. I added coat of arms. Pietras1988 14:48, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

What do you think - do I have a chance to find Erzya language speakers in a Finnish wikipedia? A.M.D.F. 16:29, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

There are some students at universala level in Finland who know a little about Erzya language (as I do) but I believe that they can't use it in Wikipedia (same way as I). It's pity but I know they sympathize your work (as I do). - Artomo 06:49, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Titles edit

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I was unsure about the titles, but I thought it would make sense to change the titles under which they are sorted (I did not change the actual titles), as it seemed odd to me to have the uppercase Ms sorted separately from the lowercase Ms. If this was a bad choice, let me know - I will go back and undo my changes. (Or, alternatively, I could put all the sorting strings into lower case letters only)

Oh, and .. thanks for the dictionary - I've been using it for weeks, and only now noticed that it's yours. It's been a great help.

Jbradley 10:18, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for thanks, it’s nice to be useful. - I do not mind collecting the titles under one indexal letter as fas as the actual pages have the right upper or lower case letter(s). Just now I doubt to use the original Mari names for the months because part of the names is still under debate. They are rarely used in Onchyko a couple of years only but I think go on changing the Russian type titles remaining the redirecting pages. I hope I do not make a mistake. – Artomo 13:09, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

My instinct would be to have the first letter of all articles capitalized - from what I know, this is the standard style in Russian encyclopaedias ([example from the Russian wikipedia] - but as I honestly don't know about the rules in Mari here, I will continue doing it like this for now - I've mostly been creating articles that are definitely capitalized in any case.

I can't really say about the month names - I've been mostly working with material printed in the 80s, where the Russian names only are used. I've heard that the Mari names are used more nowadays, but .. I'm ashamed to say that I've never actually been to Mari El - going for the first time in July.

I have mostly been working on/with templates (Category:Wp/mhr/шаблон), as with these .. I can fill in the data (population numbers, et cetera) pretty much 1:1 from other wikipedias. If I named a category sloppily .. only the template needs to be fixed.

I've mostly been working on geography, as (a) I think I'm the least likely to make mistakes here (b) because I think that articles on countries would probably be something the people deciding on the wikis status will check (c) because it's easy to create LOTS of articles here. There are some things I am unsure about here - for example, I can only guess how "Острова Уоллис и Футуна" would translate into Mari - "Уоллис да Футуна Остров-влак"? I'm not creating any articles where I'm unsure for now, these names are just on the templates, and thus very easy to correct. Also, I only know the names of a handfull of languages - I would have no idea, for example, what Norwegian would be in Mari I will only be making complete country profiles of countries where I have actually seen the local language's name in Mari.

Another problem I have here: In some cases like Brussels or Munich, I'm not sure if I should try to approximate the local names (-->Мӱнхен) or stick to the Russian (-->Мюнхен). If you have any general suggestions here, please let me know. Thanks! Jbradley 02:40, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

As I already wrote, let’s not be too eager in helping Mari Wikipedia. Let’s do what we can do, no more. About geografical names I haven’t seen any (semi)official list - so no help from me - but норвег йылме is in my F-M-dictionary (s.v. norja).
I remember that earlier, when the other Wikipedias were born without this incubator, all titles were automatically turned into title case, so there was no possibility to choose upper or lower case in titles. In Wiktionaries it was a problem and later it was solved by alloying upper and lower case. Therefore we have the possibility and we must use it. For example the poem “Oto” by Chavain must be in upper case but article about “oto” (as botanical term) must be in lower case. - Artomo 15:06, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I did find a list of Mari geographical names online here: http://www.geonames.de/indcou.html. Nothing close to official of course, I have no idea who compiled these. Those that I can compare with other materials though seem quite right. No languages, though .. and it's sovereign states only. It should be OK, I think, for me to continue to creating articles of the sort of Wp/mhr/Финляндий for countries where I feel relatively certain that I know the name - there isn't too much I can do wrong here. I also think that it will be easier to motivate Maris to get involved on this project if a lot of the boring work has been done - and, if the wikipedia has been made a "proper" one, with links to the Mari articles in the Russian wikipedia, also if they're short articles. Let me know if you think I'm going too far in some area.Jbradley 17:53, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Now that we have one native speaker on the name list already, I think we should add ourselves to the editors list here - I've already added myself. - Jbradley 20:13, 27 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
