Re:About BetaWiki Translation issue edit

Thankyou Siebrand for your kind offer.

I have logged-in to Betawiki at your advice.

However, there is one clear problem that ought to be addressed.

The BetaWiki Interface is written in Finnish!

Apart from the Finns and Estonians themselves, how many people in the world can read that language?

Here is my suggestion to User:Nike of Betawiki - Since the current Internationally recognized Lingua Franca is the English language, it would be wise and prudent to change the default interface language to English.

Although I know that longtime Wikipedians already know how to change the interface into English by simply choosing "English" at "My preferences", not many people in the world know what the words such as "Asetukset" or "Tämä sivu sisältää ohjelmiston käyttöliittymätekstiä ja on suojattu häiriköinnin estämiseksi" actually mean.

(For example, User:Symane had informed me here and here about this problem.)

I hope that you could tell User:Nike (or whoever is in change) to implement this minor change - Unless Finland suddenly becomes a superpower (which is extremely improbable) in the long-term we will end up with literally hundreds of Bureaucratically Approved Incubator Wikipedias and very little Wikipedias being created due to this Finnish language barrier.

I think I may have answered this question elsewhere. I/we do expect people that visit Betawiki are basically experienced users with MediaWiki, otherwise customisation of messages is hardly impossible. The interface is in Finnish because we do not want anything out of the ordinary to be missed. You change your preferences and set it to your language. All is well after that. frc at Betawiki edit

Hi. JeanVoisin and I are still working on the translation. The translations that we've done still need to be checked for consistency. If we commit the translations as they are right now and we correct an error in an already-commited translation, will the newly-changed translation be committed when we commit the rest of the translations? We're both new to Wikipedia and any help you can give us would be greatly appreciated. RoyAlcatraz 15:13, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes. You can change messages in Betawiki over and over after commits and they will go into the MediaWiki code when committed. Cheers! 213.84.127.221 21:20, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
