Feedback Request: Approval and Participation in Incubation Experiment
editHello,
As part of an experiment proposed by the WMF Language and Product Localization team, which you can read about here, we have requested the Language Committee to approve your language project and help graduate it from the Incubator.
Through this experiment, we are interested in understanding the impact of modern wiki features (that Wikimedia wikis) have on the editing activity of users compared to when they were in the Wikimedia Incubator. Read the hypothesis statement here. There are no specific expectations for participation from editors of the approved language, other than wanting to know if your community has any concerns about being part of this experiment, about receiving approval at this stage, and if you will be open to continuing your community activities as usual over the next 3-4 months. Are there any concerns we should be aware of?
We would appreciate your response by September 16th. If we do not receive a response, the wiki will not be approved by the Language Committee. SSethi (WMF) (talk) 18:51, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

- @SSethi (WMF), this is a great initiative. I have often wondered how far this language project would have been, were it not for the fact that it is in the incubator. This step is very much welcome and I look forward to continue contributing to the wiki in its own domain space. I have no doubt that you will find as we did with other small South African language projects, a steady ramp of both activity and traffic. Best regards -- Thuvack (talk) 10:23, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you all for your support and interest in participating in the experiment! As soon as I hear from the Language Committee about the next steps, I will share more information. SSethi (WMF) (talk) 20:26, 13 September 2024 (UTC)

- Following the successful efforts made through the SADiLaR-Wikipedia-PanSALB (SWiP) Project to intensify the contribution and visibility of the language on the platform.
- The SWiP Project has conducted a series of focused workshops that have significantly increased the volume and quality of isiNdebele content on Wikipedia. These workshops have engaged numerous participants, ranging from language practitioners to community members, all contributing to the preservation and promotion of isiNdebele in the digital space. As a result of these contributions, isiNdebele has made notable progress within the incubator, demonstrating its potential to thrive independently on Wikipedia.
- Looking ahead, we are planning a series of targeted edit-a-thons specifically focused on isiNdebele. These events aim to sustain and further enrich the ongoing contributions, ensuring that the language continues to develop and reach a broader audience. By moving isiNdebele out of the incubator, we will enable contributors to access the full range of Wikipedia’s resources, increasing participation and engagement.
- We kindly request your approval to facilitate this transition, as it aligns with our shared goal of promoting indigenous languages and safeguarding their digital presence. I am confident that with continued support and focused initiatives, isiNdebele will continue to grow as a vibrant and well-represented language on Wikipedia. - We will launch the second phase of the SWiP project which will help with the contributions in isiNdebele we will also do edit-a-thons focused on isiNdebele. We are definitely sure that this will help with the contributions in isiNdebele and it will also encourage the editors to continue contributing. Nomsa Skosana (talk) 16:08, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hi all! Thanks for your continued enthusiasm. It looks like we are missing some settings before we can proceed, particularly the "Project namespace." Could you update the page with the requested information? Thank you! SSethi (WMF) (talk) 22:38, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
Congratulations on approval and next steps
editCongratulations on your approval and going live! On behalf of the experiment team, I’m sharing some resources that may be helpful for your next steps:

- Indigenous Languages and Knowledge Toolbox
You can also request a meeting with the Language Diversity Hub, which supports new language communities. Use this form to set up a meeting, and they will reach out to find a suitable time: Request a Meeting. Alternatively, you can email them at languagediversityhub@gmail.com. They’re eager to assist!
Join the following Telegram group for discussions on enhancing language diversity in Wikimedia projects: Telegram Group.
If you have any questions during the experiment which will run until January 2025, feel free to reach out on the Future of Incubation talk page.
For the experiment, the Language Committee relaxed the approval requirement slightly, particularly for Southern Ndebele, despite 0% completion of translations. To help the wiki succeed, we highly recommend focusing on translating the most used messages.
There’s nothing required from you at this moment, so you can continue your activities as usual. We’ll touch base with you in three months to request a meeting with active editors from your community for a brief survey, helping to shape the next steps of the experiment. Happy editing!
