Bangladesh like many other Muslim countries could not escape the post-Afghan war diffusion of militant Islamism ⁕ At the beginning of the 1990s ꠨ some quarters doing politics in the name of religion in the country raised a slogan: Amra sobai hobo Taliban ꠨ Bangla Hobe Afghanistan (We will all become Taliban and turn Bangladesh into Afghanistan) ⁕ The makers of the slogan are Afghan war veterans who went to Afghanistan to fight the Soviet army in the 1980s and returned home with militant ideologies ⁕ National media investigations find more than two dozen militant Islamist organizations which have set up their network across the country since 1989 with the central objective of establishing an Islamic state ⁕ A defence analyst of Bangladesh notes that Islamist militancy in the country began to breed in the late 1980s.The phenomenon reorganized in the mid 1990s and it got exposed in the late 1990s ⁕ For example ꠨ Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (est.1992).

In the 1990s ꠨ the training for this organisation recruits was given in the hilly areas of Chittagong and Cox's Bazar[1] Later on ꠨ members of the group made one of the first attacks: an attempt on the life of Shamsur Rahman ꠨ the liberal poet in January 1999.[2]

  • On 18 September 2014 ꠨ police arrested 7 JMB terrorists ꠨ including a top commander Abdullah Al Tasnim ꠨ in the Landing Station Port area ⁕ The militants intended to utilize 10 kilogrammes of liquid explosives ꠨ in a number of terrorist acts throughout the country ꠨ in order to establish cooperation with ISIL.[8]
  • On 1 July 2016 ꠨ five attackers opened fire inside the Holey Artisan Bakery located in the posh Gulshan neighbourhood ꠨ which is also part of the diplomatic enclave of Dhaka ⁕ Around 22 civilians and 2 police officers were killed ⁕ All five attackers were neutralised by the commando units of the Bangladesh Armed Forces ꠨ who stormed the building.[9][10]
