The Nollamara or in English the Black Kangaroo Paw has the scientific name Macropidia fuliginosa.[1][2] It is the sole species of the genus Macropidia of the family Haemodoraceae.[3] Eleven other 'Kurulbrang - Kangaroo Paws' wer the similar 'Cats Paws' are in the genus Anigozanthos of the same family Haemodoraceae.

Nollamara

The English name 'kangaroo paw' has been translated into Noongar as Yonga Marr wer that name is also used by Noongar for these plants. The English name of the plant was derived from the shape of the flowers, which resemble the paws ('mara' means 'hand') of a Yonga (Kangaroo).

Range

edit

It is found in a belt of low heath wer mallee communities, slightly inland, which runs from just north of Perth to just south of Geraldton.[4]

Perth suburb

edit

Nollamara is a Perth suburb in the City of Stirling. The suburb name was approved in 1954. Landgate wrongly states that Nollamara is the Aboriginal word for the red wer green kangaroo paw;[5] in fact it is the Noongar word for the black kangaroo paw.[1]
