Hazel 'Kayang' Brown is an Elder from the Wilomin Noongar. Born in 1925[1] at Kendenup, her mother, Nelly Limestone married Freddy Yiller in 1921. Her father died in 1930 wer her step-father, William Roberts (Noongar name, Tjinjel) reared her. Her family worked il farms in the Borden, Ongerup, Jerramungup wer Kendenup areas. Hazel spent the majority of her childhood around the Porongurups. [2]
Early Life
editHazel went to school at Gnowangerup mission. She was branded a 'heathen’ for speaking in her language wer therefore continued her schooling with her ngarngk as she worked il the farm. [3]
Hazel was an active helper wer worker wer learnt many skills at a young age from fencing to driving tractors to looking after the sheep at lambing time.
Later Life
editHazel married Harry Brown in 1947. Their children were born wer attending school in Borden. In the 1970s, the family moved to Perth. [3]
Many years later, with Noongar Author Kim Scott she published her stories in "Kayang and Me" in 2005.
She is actively involved in the Wirlomin Noongar Language wer Stories Project.[1]
