I guess because the Arabic ث is usually rendered by ⲧ (especially non-Bohairic) or ⲑ (especially Bohairic). As this is the case also in older Coptic literature, it seems that even in the time when it was pronounced like English th (similar to the standard pronunciation), it is written with ⲧ or ⲑ in Coptic. Nowadays, as in Egyptian Arabic ث is pronounced like ت, it is even more so ⲧ or ⲑ. Greetings, بطرس مرقس

Thanks بطرس مرقس. I knew that Egyptians never liked to pronounce the ث and mostly they pronounce it as ت. However, there are few cases where they pronounce the ث as a س including the case of Umm Kulthum. IMO, as ⲑ is always pronounced like the English T (and not ث), I think that writing Kulthum as ⲭⲟⲗⲥⲟⲩⲙ (i.e., Kulcum) rather than ⲭⲟⲗⲑⲟⲩⲙ (i.e., Kultum) would be closer to original sound of the name. Kulthum is attested in Coptic as ⲕⲁⲗⲉⲥⲙ. I've also used ⲑⲁⲙⲃⲱⲗ for Es-Simbillawein. Although ⲑⲁⲙⲃⲱⲗ is associated with Tell Tambu near Es-Simbillawein, i thought that Arabic toponym could be a dual form of a Greek/Coptic one (like El-Ashmunein).
