Talk:Wp/cop/ϣⲱⲙ `ⲙⲡⲓⲡⲁⲥⲭⲁ
Name
editThe first part is not ϭⲱⲙ, but ϣⲱⲙ, as the etymology of the Arabic word suggests. We should change it. Also, it is not good when people try to legitimize their creations by adding the Coptic name to the English and other wikipedias, thus popularizing it.
Also, ⲛⲓⲥⲓⲙ "the grasses" is just a wrong Copticizing of the second compound of the Arabic counterpart. The festivity should just be called ϣⲱⲙ (ϣⲁⲓ), but due to the various meanings of ϣⲱⲙ (which is no coincidence and stem all from the same word), some clarification would be good.
As it is connected with Easter, I think ϣⲱⲙ `ⲙⲡⲓⲡⲁⲥⲭⲁ (or ϣⲱⲙ `ⲛϯⲡⲁⲥⲭⲁ, Paskha is often feminine in Coptic sources - but not in official Bohairic ones) would be good and it also makes sense semantically: "Harvest of Easter". ⲁⲥⲥⲉⲛⲁ ⲕⲁⲡⲟⲡⲓ (talk) 03:34, 9 September 2018 (UTC)
- Excuse me but what’s bad about popularising Coptic language even with invented things? If that’s a wrong popularisation then maybe if people advanced in Egyptian etymology and native/near native Coptic speakers (who I assume you are) could write or expand a few articles here from time to time (preferably about everyday things and subjects from “a list of articles every Wikipedia should have” which is essentially for this Wikipedia to be approved) that would be a REAL popularisation of Coptic? I know there’s still a lot of mistakes here but if correcting them was accompanied by what I mentioned above that would be just great. Hope you get my point. Thank you. ⲡⲁⲣⲇⲁ (talk) 12:55, 9 September 2018 (UTC)
- Im not against popularising invented things if they make sense etymologically. Also, I get your point but maybe many people here don't have time every day and they also don't see Wikipedia as their hobby. You can't blame people for not spending enough time on here even if they criticize what others have done wrongly. I want to point out mistakes. ⲁⲥⲥⲉⲛⲁ ⲕⲁⲡⲟⲡⲓ (talk) 13:55, 9 September 2018 (UTC)
- Please lets not quarrel about this. We need everybody here, regardless of time he invests or proficiency level. So, I honestly never heard of a Coptic name for this festival. I am also not sure if the Arabic one is actually derived from Coptic or not. I'm sorry that I didn't see this earlier. ϭⲱⲙ `ⲛⲛⲓⲥⲓⲙ seems to be re-Copticizing of the Arabic term. Semantically, I agree that it is not satisfying. However, I'm also not entirely sure that the first part of the Arabic phrase is derived from ϣⲱⲙ. But the "Egyptian Information Service", cited in Al-Ahram and the English Wikipedia, says that شم is the approximate Arabic rendering of Shemu, a season in Ancient Egypt. This word, Š3m, Šmw, is indeed the source of Coptic ϣⲱⲙ. If we agree with the Egyptian Information Service, than yeah, ϣⲱⲙ would be better than ϭⲱⲙ. ϣⲱⲙ has several meanings, the original is "summer", from that "harvest", and the latter gave us the meaning "interest" too. So we should clarify it. ϣⲱⲙ `ⲙⲡⲓⲡⲁⲥⲭⲁ would be a nice Coptic rendering. Although it is probably etymologically more correct than the one we use now, both are inventions. ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 17:29, 9 September 2018 (UTC)
- Copts tend to use the Arabic term or just say ⲡⲁⲥⲭⲁ. The former, obviously, is because they don't know a Coptic term and the latter is a bit imprecise. I would use ϣⲱⲙ `ⲙⲡⲓⲡⲁⲥⲭⲁ, it sounds logical. Maybe somebody has another idea; if not, ϣⲱⲙ `ⲙⲡⲓⲡⲁⲥⲭⲁ is good. Ϯⲙⲉⲗⲗⲓⲥⲏⲧ (talk) 20:38, 9 September 2018 (UTC)
- That was my impression too, but I'm not Christian and I hoped somebody else would know more. So should we change the name now? ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 21:26, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
