More relevant articles would help
editThis wiki needs content that is relevant to native speakers. Right now it contains many bot-type pages about towns in Germany, Maine, Massachussets, Rhode Island, and Vermont. I'd suggest taking a practical, illustrated dictionary approach to balance out the content at this point, and add the automated bot-type articles after we cover some more of the basic topics and vocabulary. Alabama online dictionary available
editA very nice online dictionary of Alabama is now available:
I hope we can add some content from this dictionary, so as to make these pages more useful for people who speak the language. Djembayz (talk) 17:54, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
Questioning Several pages on this site
editHi there: I'm a linguist currently working on Alabama and there are several pages in this site that don't seem to be any kind of Alabama. Firstly, there are letters which are not used in any script. Chàʷmaninnaaɬiilka, used in [1] has a ʷ. Like wise Uʷpà has u, which does not occur. There are some articles where most of the words are correct (at least, pulled from the dictionary), but very few are grammatically accurate. There are also some suspicious loanwords that seem crafted by a non-native speaker. Like aadípàrtmànti (from the same article earlier). This seems to try to be a loan of department? Most speakers I've worked with would loan it something like dipartmantka. Even the name wikipedia has a theta which does not appear anywhere in the language; there's not even a phoneme for it.
Looking through, the grammar is just completely wrong. ooli is used as a copula, when its actually an auxiliary used in cleft constructions. the locative suffix -fa and the positional prefix aa- (which is restricted to verbs of position) are used haphazardly to mean "in" in different pages, which is not at all their distribution with native speakers. I suspect these pages were not made by someone with a command of the language, but just by directly translating using a dictionary. In any case, many of these pages need to be reevaluated. I highly doubt there is many, if any pages which have a single grammatical sentence. Notluckylinguist (talk) 02:51, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
