Français : Carte sociolinguistique de l'Océanie montrant les différentes langues polynésiennes :
  • leur aire linguistique d'origine
  • les situations de diglossie qui se sont développées au cours du XIXe et XXe siècles :
    • la diffusion de langues véhiculaires (tahitien, maori des îles Cook, tongien à Niuafo'ou)
    • le poids de l'anglais et du français (et de l'espagnol pour l'île de Pâques, qui est absente de la carte).
  • Les langues en danger sont indiquées selon la classification de l'UNESCO (Christopher Moseley, Atlas of the World’s Languages Danger, UNESCO, 2010, 222 p., carte 27 p 217, url http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0018/001870/187026e.pdf)
  • Les deux langues polynésiennes éteintes sont indiquées (Niuatoputapu et Moriori)
  • Une grande partie des locuteurs de langues polynésiennes se trouvent en diaspora : Nouvelle-Calédonie (et dans une moindre mesure la France), Nouvelle-Zélande (Australie + USA dans une moindre mesure). Ces flux sont indiqués sur la carte.

Il y a débat pour savoir quelle est la différence entre langue et dialecte : je me suis référé aux sources cités ci-bas.
