It was throughthe liberality of Newton Case of Hartford that the presentlibrary building was constructed, with a capacity of 200,-000 volumes. The name of the seminary was changed to Itspresent title on its removal, and later a reorganization waseffected to conform with modern institutions of like character.Dr. Chester D. Hartranft was elected first President, whichoffice he filled until 1903, when he resigned in order to con-tinue literary work in Germany. The Deaf and Dumb Asylum at Hartford owes its originto the endeavors of Dr. Mason F. Cogswell, whose infantdaughter, while suffering from an attack of spotted fever in1807, became totally deaf, and afterward practically a mute.On the child reaching the age of ten years, the fatherdesired to procure for her an education, and sought the co-op-eration of his friends and neighbors to establish a school fordeaf mutes. At a meeting held April 12, 18 15, at the residence ofDr. Cogswell, steps were taken to perfect a permanent organ-ization ; also to obtain subscriptions to defray the expensesof a competent person, to visit Europe for the purpose ofacquiring the art of instructing deaf-mutes. The funds were readily secured, and Rev. Thomas Gallau-det was the universal choice; but he was very unwilling torelinquish the sacred calling, for which he had fitted himselfat the Andover Theological Seminary. He was at lengthpersuaded, however, and sailed for Liverpool on May 25.In Great Britain Mr. Gallaudet encountered insurmountableobstacles in his efforts to obtain instruction.
